Japan PS Vita Sales Drop 78 Per Cent In A Week

Sony?s latest handheld had a cracking debut last weekend in Japan, hitting 325,000 sales in just two days. Unfortunately, the console hasn?t been able to sustain the momentum, even with the benefit of Christmas, pushing a paltry 72,000 the following week.

It?s typical for sales of new consoles to fall significantly in the week immediately after release, once the fans have had their fill, but an almost 80 per cent plummet is unusual. The facts and figures are outlined in this article on MSNBC, which also points out the 3DS only had a 44 per cent drop over the same time frame when it was first released.

Nintendo, on the other hand, saw its portable go gang-busters in Japan over Christmas, with 480,000 sold leading up to the world?s biggest day of gift exchanging. It helps the 3DS is half the price of the PS Vita and has a more mature line-up of games, after initially struggling for months to put some compelling titles forward.

We?ll have to watch how the Vita goes when it launches here and in the States, but it?s not going to help that we won?t be able to purchase 32GB memory cards.

Correction: Broken Budgets-Medicaid story (AP)

ATLANTA ? In a story Dec. 27 about state efforts around the country to reduce Medicaid costs, The Associated Press reported erroneously that New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is pushing a plan that would mean a parent of two making more than $103 a week would no longer be eligible for coverage. Such an option had been under consideration but was rejected.

Avastin Results For Ovarian Cancer Fail To Impress

Avastin - Cancer Drug

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently pulled its ?approval for the breast cancer fighting drug Avastin and now the drug is said to have provided disappointing results during two ovarian cancer testing trials.

Both studies found that the drug did nothing to improve the survival rate for most patients taking the drug. The studies also found that while Avastin helped keep the disease from worsening for several months it also brought on more side effects.

In the meantime Genentech has recently gained approval for Avastin in Europe as an advanced stage ovarian cancer drug but has no plans to immediately seek the same approval in the United States. ?According to company?spokeswoman?Charlotte Arnold:

??We do not believe the data will support approval.?

Avastin lost approval in the United States in November when the FDA found that the drug did not ?meaningfully extend life? while still providing for serious side effects. The drug despite it?s success rate came with a $100,000 per year price tag.

While breast cancer is not approved at this time the drug is still used to target some forms of colon, kidney, lung and brain cancers.

The study conducted by?Dr. Robert Burger of Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia found that 1,900 women with ovarian cancer had a media time for progression of 10 months in those given just chemotherapy while Avastin users only extended that time by one to four months. ?The study also found that side effects were worsened including high blood pressure, stomach and gut problems.

The second study found that 1,500 ovarian cancer patients only extended their life expectancy by one to two months when compared to a standard chemotherapy regime while once again increasing blood pressure.

Both studies were partially funded by Genentech.

Have you known anyone who actually had positive results from Avastin during their fight against breast cancer?

Venezuela to remove breast implants for free (AP)

CARACAS, Venezuela ? Venezuela is offering free surgeries for women to remove faulty French-made breast implants, the country's top health official said.

Health Minister Eugenia Sader said women with implants made by the now-defunct French company Poly Implant Prothese may go to hospitals that carry out plastic surgery to have the implants removed, the state-run Venezuelan News Agency reported.

Sader said Tuesday that the free procedure will simply be to remove the implants and will not include replacing them.

"Those patients are running a risk," Sader said. However, she said, women need not seek emergency care and instead may visit hospitals at their convenience.

France's health system has recommended that women with the PIP implants get them replaced, and has agreed to pay for surgeries. In Brazil and Argentina, however, health officials just recommend checkups.

It's unclear how many women have the PIP implants in Venezuela, where breast enlargement surgery is popular and doctors say the French implants used to be widely used.

An estimated 35,000 to 40,000 women in the country have breast enlargement surgery each year, said Dr. Marisol Graterol, president of the Venezuelan Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has criticized the widespread popularity of breast surgery, saying women shouldn't be sold on an image that big bosoms are attractive.

The plastic surgery society recommended last week that women with PIP breast implants see a doctor to have them checked. Graterol said doctors should decide depending on each patient's situation whether or not the implants need to be removed.

Sales of PIP implants were halted in Venezuela in April 2010, Graterol said.

Plastic surgeon Dr. Henry Saud said he removed ruptured PIP implants from more than 10 patients during the past year.

In some cases, his patients hadn't noticed anything wrong and the leaking implants were detected during imaging exams, Saud said. In other cases, "they felt discomfort and had swelling."

"It used to be one of the most-used brands," Saud said. Most of the women opted to replace the PIP implants with those of other brands, he said.

Balloon Juice ? In The Business Of Giving You The Business

Kind of a depressing WaPo piece here about America?s House of Not So Commons and politics increasingly being a rich person?s game:

Between 1984 and 2009, the median net worth of a member of the House more than doubled, according to the analysis of?financial disclosures, from $280,000 to?$725,000 in inflation-adjusted 2009 dollars, excluding home ?equity.

Over the same period, the wealth of an American family has declined slightly, with the comparable median figure sliding from $20,600 to $20,500, according to the Panel Study of Income Dynamics from the University of Michigan.

The comparisons exclude home equity because it is not included in congressional reporting, and 1984 was chosen because it is the earliest year for which consistent wealth statistics are available.

The growing disparity between the representatives and the represented means that there is a greater distance between the economic experience of Americans and those of lawmakers.

That particular understatement could power multiple suns.? Being a career politician is, well, a very lucrative career.? Combine this with the fact that maybe 10-15% of House districts are ever truly competitive in an election by design and you start to understand just how depressing the chore of fixing Congress is.? Some 90% disapproval for the institution, majorities now saying that their own Representative needs to be tossed, but maybe 60 out of 435 seats will change hands, at most, 80.? The other 350 or so are in zero danger of losing their seat even in an election year where the House has roughly the same approval rating as breeding velociraptors down the hall from a hospital neonatal ICU.

The Senate fares no better of course and is actually in many ways far worse, but if you should still somehow be wondering why it seems like everyone with ?Rep.? in front of their name has no idea how the 99% actually lives, there?s a distinct, structural reason for that.? Also, good luck ever getting these clowns to agree to term limits, which would be a vital component of any fix.

For the one percent, by the one percent.? Could you imagine more than one percent of Congress ever consisting of pipe-fitters, school teachers, auto mechanics, computer engineers, or nurses?? It might be good for America.? It would be slightly less good for people with a net worth of $725,000 or more, which is why it wouldn?t happen.

All the kvetching about the Presidency is one thing, but until we strip mine the professional grifters out of Congress, ain?t nothin? gonna change, bro.

How Does NORAD 'Track' Santa? (LiveScience.com)

For more than 50 years, NORAD ? the North American Aerospace Defense Command ? has used its high-tech missile-tracking systems to track Santa's progress during his annual Christmas Eve flight around the world.

For a 24-hour period, about 1,200 military volunteers take shifts manning the command center at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado; they monitor radar screens and field calls from excited 7-year-olds who ask for updates on Santa's location. They also update Kris Kringle's progress on the Google Earth map on the NORAD Tracks Santa website, as well as the Facebook page and the Twitter feed.

For the first time this year, people can even keep constant tabs on Santa's sleigh by downloading the NORAD Tracks Santa iPhone and Android apps. In other words, the program is a big deal, and it get bigger every Christmas.

But how do they do it? How does NORAD "track" Santa? [Is There a Santa Claus?]

When asked whether the volunteers plan the jolly old elf's route ahead of time, U.S. Navy Lieutenant Commander Bill Lewis, a Santa tracker, was having none of that.

"We don't plan it, he does," Lewis said. "We just monitor his travels with our ground-based radar, satellites, fighter aircraft, and, of course, the Santa Cams ? he passes over certain cities, and based on the track we're projecting, we've got cameras set up."

The NORAD team monitors a radar system called the North Warning System, which consists of 47 installations strung across the northern border of North America, for indications that Santa Claus has left the North Pole.

"Rudolph's nose puts off quite the heat signature," Lewis told Life's Little Mysteries.

The Christmas program isn't so out of the ordinary for the men and women of NORAD: "365 days a year we track possible threats to the homeland. So tracking Santa as an airborne object fits into our mission set," he said.

Through his experience as a Santa Tracker, Lewis was able to offer a bit of insight into an age-old question: How Santa manages to make it all the way around the world, sort through all the gifts for the good boys and girls and get home before dawn. "Santa has this way of transcending time. We've estimated that he travels at the speed of starlight," Lewis said. [Can Tech Help Santa Deliver the Goods? 5 Tech Upgrades for Claus ]

That's 671 million miles (1 billion kilometers) per hour, which means Santa can travel more than 16 billion miles (26 billion km) in the 24 hours allotted for his journey. A trip round the world is only 25,000 miles (40,000 kilometers), so at his estimated flight speed, Santa could technically circumnavigate Earth 650,000 times if he wanted.

He doesn't, of course ? instead, he takes it slow and downs a mindblowing number of cookies and glasses of milk along the way.
