NASA's dead satellite falls, starting over Pacific

Charts the debris in space since the 1950s.

In this image provided by NASA this is the STS-48 onboard photo of the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) in the grasp of the RMS (Remote Manipulator System) during deployment, from the shuttle in September 1991. The satellite is 35 feet long, 15 feet in diameter, weighs 13,000 pounds. U.S. space officials say they expect a dead satellite to fall to Earth in about a week. NASA has been watching the 6-ton satellite closely. NASA scientists are doing their best to tell us where a plummeting 6-ton satellite will fall later this week. It's just that if they're off a little bit, it could mean the difference between hitting Florida or New York. Or, say, Iran or India. (AP Photo/NASA)

WASHINGTON (AP) ? NASA's dead 6-ton satellite plunged to Earth early Saturday, but more than eight hours later, U.S. space officials didn't know just where it hit. They thought the fiery fall was largely over water and the debris probably hurt no one.

The bus-sized satellite first penetrated Earth's atmosphere somewhere over the Pacific Ocean, according to NASA and the U.S. Air Force's Joint Space Operations Center. But that doesn't necessarily mean it all fell into the sea.

NASA's earlier calculations had predicted that the 20-year-old former climate research satellite would fall over a 500-mile swath and could include land.

Because the plummet began over the ocean and given the lack of any reports of people being hit, that "gives us a good feeling that no one was hurt," but officials didn't know for certain, NASA spokesman Steve Cole told The Associated Press.

The two government agencies said the 35-foot satellite fell sometime between 11:23 p.m. EDT Friday and 1:09 a.m. EDT Saturday, but with no precise time or location.

There was rampant speculation on the Internet and Twitter, much of it focusing on unconfirmed reports and even video of debris over Alberta, Canada.

Cole said that was possible because the last track for the satellite included Canada, starting north of Seattle and then in a large arc north then south. From there, the track continued through the Atlantic south toward Africa, but it was unlikely the satellite got that far if it started falling over the Pacific.

Cole said NASA was hoping for more details from the Air Force, which was responsible for tracking debris.

But given where the satellite may have fallen, officials may never quite know precisely.

"Most space debris is in the ocean. It'll be hard to confirm," Cole said.

Some 26 pieces of the satellite representing 1,200 pounds of heavy metal had been expected to rain down somewhere. The biggest surviving chunk should be no more than 300 pounds.

The Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite is the biggest NASA spacecraft to crash back to Earth, uncontrolled, since the post-Apollo 75-ton Skylab space station and the more than 10-ton Pegasus 2 satellite, both in 1979.

Russia's 135-ton Mir space station slammed through the atmosphere in 2001, but it was a controlled dive into the Pacific.

Before UARS fell, no one had ever been hit by falling space junk and NASA expected that not to change.

NASA put the chances that somebody somewhere on Earth would get hurt at 1-in-3,200. But any one person's odds of being struck were estimated at 1-in-22 trillion, given there are 7 billion people on the planet.

The satellite ran out of fuel and died in 2005. UARS was built and launched before NASA and other nations started new programs that prevent this type of uncontrolled crashes of satellite.

Can I Appeal Against My Parking Ticket Fines? | 3NM.ORG

If one wants to know why fines charged for parking violations are so high, one need to look back to the Road Traffic Act of 1991 where the job of regulating parking violations and parking ticket issuances were delegated to the local council.

After the act was passed the task executed by the traffic wardens fell under the jurisdiction of the Local Councils and not the police as it used to be earlier.

Now, parking on the double yellow lines would cost you more than owing an expired pay and displayed ticket. This is because, since 31st March, 2008 the Traffic Management Act 2004 was put into effect which segregated parking fines into higher and lower offence categories.

Being quite expensive, the parking tickets act as restricting element for motorists who tend to break traffic rules.

The administration costs also play a part in the size of the parking fine. Councils have to pay wages for Traffic Wardens, train them, deal with appeals from motorists and chase unpaid parking fines.

Many local councils outsource this work to external private companies. In any case, local councils always prefer to beat the back.

Many motorists do not appeal so as to not to lose the 50% discount that is offered to the early payers. They fear having to pay the full amount in case of the second appeal.

Parking fines collected from motorists form a crucial part of a council?s yearly budget. Did you know that it also finances the appeal process a motorist is entitled to? This makes us wonder whether the system is independent at all since it depends on the fines for finance.

Maintaining and increasing this source of revenue thus is extremely important for a council and their contractors, a group who might also be on certain percentage.

This has lead to a lot of unfair or unjust parking tickets being issued in this country. In fact around 70% of parking tickets are legally invalid but how often do you hear of Local Councils addressing these concerns? The answer is not very often.

In case of traffic wardens now, the approach is ticket first, everything later. However, about 7-% of motorists win their appeals.

Appeal rejection is not something that hasn?t happened before. Councils have been seen to outright reject appeal coming in, only proving the very fact that they want to protect their extra income.

It is extremely difficult for the public in general to prove such malpractices exists and are practiced by the local councils.

So in essence, parking fines are expensive because they keep motorists in check from violating traffic norms and saving form total traffic chaos and for the councils it is like an indirect tax, an avenue to generate some extra revenue.

There exist many motorists who we might or might not know who has got parking tickets issued unfairly or unjustly and would want to appeal only if they knew how to go about the same. In this context mention might be made of those innumerable sites on the web that explain the appeal process and draft a simple letter to cancel the ticket.

Traffic wardens are themselves under tremendous pressure to issue as many tickets as possible and that is the reason behind most of the tickets not being legally valid, something that you might take advantage of during your appeal.

Appealing is not resorted to many, thinking that the letter to be written is of a higher degree of complexity but this is far from the truth. As was said earlier, there exist many sites from where you can abundantly get samples or even templates of such letters.

Appealing against a parking ticket can take place via two strategies. The first successful strategy is photographic evidence. Take pictures of the said area and prove your innocence by showing the absence of any road markings or signs restricting parking therein.

The second strategy involves taking advantage of what the parking ticket says and going along it. For example, if the ticket says you had been parked at Grant Road, say that you had been parked at Grant Street.

Moreover, parking tickets issued by private entities exist as well, something which you must never pay any attention to. Though they look similar to the usual public parking tickets and can send several threat letters, but always keep in mind that since their court fees would be much higher than the fine amount they realize from you in court, they would never drag you to court in the first place.

Microsoft boots Windows Phone manager following mini-review of Nokia's Mango handset

The man who previously led the development of IE Mobile for Windows Phone is no longer with Microsoft, whose termination followed a series of tweets regarding one of Nokia's unreleased Mango handsets. A representative of Ballmer & Co. has confirmed to us "that Joe Marini no longer works at Microsoft," and while the company refuses to discuss the details of his termination, you be the judge. In his first tweet, Mr. Marini expressed glowing enthusiasm for the device, having called it one of Nokia's slickest ever. Then, however, he went on to give the phone an "8" (to summarize his 144 character review), criticize the camera as being good, but not great, and bemoan its screen size. Oops. If anything, unbridled enthusiasm is encouraged at Microsoft (just think back to Steve Ballmer's monkey dance if you had any doubt), but when sheer excitement erupts into stunning frankness regarding unreleased products from partner companies, perhaps this ex-Microsoftee should have kept his thoughts offline. We wish you luck, Joe, but next time, just remember that review scores are a relic of the past. Instead, just let the words speak for themselves.

Rite Aid 2Q loss narrows, 2012 forecast improves (AP)

Rite Aid Corp. said Thursday its fiscal second-quarter loss narrowed as a customer rewards program improved sales and Hurricane Irene brought the drugstore operator more business at the end of the quarter.

The Camp Hill, Pa., company also trimmed its projected loss for fiscal 2012.

Rite Aid lost $94.7 million, or 11 cents per share, after paying preferred dividends in the quarter that ended Aug. 27. A year ago it lost $199.3 million, or 23 cents per share, when it absorbed a $44-million charge tied to refinancing. Revenue climbed nearly 2 percent to $6.27 billion.

Analysts surveyed by FactSet expected, on average, a loss of 18 cents per share.

Rite Aid operates about 4,700 stores and trails only CVS Caremark Corp. and Walgreen Co. in size. Unlike those competitors, Rite Aid has a string of quarterly losses dating back to 2007.

The chain has closed hundreds of stores in recent years and refinanced debt to improve its financial position. Sales at its remaining stores are improving.

The company said earlier this month that sales at stores open at least a year rose 2.2 percent in the quarter, as non-pharmacy sales rose 2.5 percent while pharmacy revenue was up 2 percent. This is a key indicator of a retailer's long-term health because it excludes stores that recently opened or closed. Rite Aid broke a long streak of declines in that figure last winter.

CEO John Standley told analysts Thursday morning that the company's Wellness Plus customer rewards program was a key factor behind the growth. The program was launched in April 2010, and Rite Aid said it now has more than 44 million members, up from nearly 40 million reported for the first fiscal quarter.

They accounted for 66 percent of the company's prescriptions and 69 percent of its non-pharmacy sales during the quarter.

Rite Aid also saw 2.5 percent sales growth from stores open at least a year in August, when customers stocked up on non-pharmacy items like food and batteries in preparation for Hurricane Irene. But the company said Thursday it gave back much of that storm-related gain in September, when customers stayed away after the hurricane swept up the East Coast.

Rite Aid also said Thursday it was putting a new Save-A-Lot store concept on hold. The company announced the idea, which adds a grocery section to drugstores, last September and said it would test it at 10 stores in and around Greenville, S.C.

Standley said Thursday the profit margins of those stores have not been strong enough to take advantage of the sales gains they create, and Rite Aid doesn't plan to expand the concept with its partner, the grocery chain Supervalu.

"We still like the grocery concept and think it can work in certain of our stores," he said.

The company also started changing some of its stores to a new wellness format in the fiscal second quarter. These stores have more organic food, natural personal care products, and homeopathic medicines, along with employees who help customers find vitamins and nutritional supplements, and carry tablet computers to look up products for shoppers.

Rite Aid completed 40 wellness stores in the quarter, and Standley said customers have told them they like "the look and feel" of the stores.

For fiscal 2012, Rite Aid now expects a loss of between $345 million and $495 million, or 40 cents to 56 cents per share, and sales that will range between $25.8 billion and $26.1 billion. That compares to its previous forecast for a loss of between $370 million to $560 million, or 42 to 64 cents per share, and sales ranging from $25.7 billion to $26.1 billion.

Analysts forecast an annual loss of 50 cents per share and $25.6 billion in sales, according to FactSet.

Rite Aid shares fell 5 cents to close at $1.02 while the Dow Jones industrial average slid 3.5 percent. The company's shares have climbed more than 18 percent since closing 2010 at 88 cents.

Side effects of too much coffee? Do they exist? - Paleo Hacks.com

I drink anywhere from three to eight cups of coffee a day. Half of it is caffinated (in the morning) and after 12PM I switch to decaf. I put about a tablespoon of heavy cream and bit of cinnamon in each cup.

Any reasons why this would be unhealthy?

Edit: I'm not talking from a caffeine perspective, just the coffee itself. Some people tell me that there is something to do with the acidity.

Edit2: I'm VLC if that matters.

Edit3: Reasons I drink that much coffee: I seriously just love the taste of coffee. I make a nice green tea with lemon, which is good.. but I just prefer the taste of coffee. Also, I've found that it works to suppress my appetite for snacks (I do a lot of computer work.)

I love coffee but 8 cups a day is excessive - sorry, but I prefer to be honest!

I would be thinking of cutting back in order to preserve good adrenal function - coffee promotes the release of adrenalin, and doing it on such a regular basis at that level isn't natural. You risk burning out your adrenals, it's not something one can easily bounce back from either.

The other effect of coffee at that amount is hallucinations - I don't have a ref but there was a study conducted about this just in the last few months.

I get high anxiety if I overdo coffee, my tolerance is low at the moment. But, speaking from experience, it can have a detrimental effect on mental health ay different doses for different people.

I find it hard to find reliable studies about coffee, and I suspect it's because it's such a money industry and because people are so addicted to it. My experience is that too much coffee taxes your adrenals and it's harsher on the system than tea. I have to stick to decaf because just one full-caf cup and I'll have to drag myself out of bed the next day and I get zits on my chin. (Some people's adrenals are more resilient.) I can drink 3-4 cups of green tea in a day though and not have the same problem.

not a big believer in the idea that we need an acid-base balance in our food intake to maintain blood ph, the human body is pretty good at regulating that. However STOMACH PH can be effected and long-term intake of high-acid foods, particularly things like soda and coffee that are taken without the buffer of other foods. This can be an issue as it can mess with the HCL production in the stomach.

regarding the decaf, do remember that it is not caffeine free. (for example, starbucks decaf has almost the same caffeine content as folgers regular)

It is a high oxalate food (not as high as spinach, but if you are drinking 8 cups it could be a decent dose), and if you are doing VLC too, there is a slight increase in the risk of kidney stones if you don't have a good amount of oxalobactor in your gut. Magnesium is supposed to bind with oxalate, so it might be a good idea to supplement with a bit more than your ordinary person would need to.

My recommendation is to drink a cup or two of the real stuff in the morning, and then drink herbal teas for the rest of the day (chamomile has a paradoxical effect on me in that it actually wakes me up when I'm a bit over-caffeinated), supplementing with an adaptogen like Siberian Ginseng(Eleuthero) and a hefty dose of some B vitamins in the afternoon will give you a lift and help protect your adrenals.

How is your decaf processed? Just from a toxins standpoint, some decaffeinated coffee is prepared by soaking out the caffeine in plain water, others use chemical processes. Personally, I don't really see the point in drinking decaf.

Since you are a man I think there are no bad effects for you if you drink more then 3 cups. 1-2 cups of coffee has been shown to produce negative effects. 3 or more did none, adaptation I think. Man have problems accumulating iron, premenopausal woman have opposite problem.

Coffee may promote dehydration (this is what is often claimed) but I failed to find any reliable info about it.

Other than potential adrenal fatigue, that much coffee is a set up for chronic dehydration due to its diuretic properties. Chronic dehydration can lead to a plethora of life long ailments that can impair the quality, and likely the quantity of your life.

Yep. Big issues are adrenal fatigue and dehydration.

Larger context: probably any question about potential side effects from eating/drinking too much X, equates to asking "Is it possible to consume too much X?" Uh, yep. It is.

SNOSN? Sales Training Category Sm-r Improves Sales

Being a manager means being in service to the team.? It means giving the team credit and making everyone else successful.Sales Training Improves Sales

I can?t hear the term without thinking of the leader of a marching band.? That?s the person who takes a big stick and makes it go up and down, while the band does the work of actually making the music.

So, as we go forward, let?s stop enabling all these tin-pot ?leaders? by pretending that they?re doing anything other than grandstanding.? Let?s value the real managers, who actually do the hard (and largely thankless) work of making other people productive.

But what is a ?leader,? anyway? What does a ?leader? do?

Yeah, yeah, the idea of leadership sounds neat ? especially if you?re in management ? and it makes a manager sound all charismatic and exciting.

You see it in the lower levels, too, where managers bloviate about?leadership?and ?inspiring? people, when in fact they?re usually just making everyone under them want to puke.

In the last 20 years or so there have been a number of trends, fads and concepts that have served to break the bond between a corporation and its employees, at a huge cost to both.

Peter Fullbrook the Managing Director for Prosell?sales training?wrote what their business has achieved in 25+ years of trading. Not just our results, but the results of all the companies we have been fortunate enough to work with and to help make a distinctive difference.

Dumb Concept #2: ?Leadership?

What Drucker said ? and I agree with him ? is that the?business world doesn?t need leaders.?It needs?managers?? people who can actually manage a team of people.

More Sale Articles

There are 5 key concepts, this is the second

The concept of a ?leader? means that credit for what the team does goes to the leader.? And you see it every day, in the bloated salaries paid to ?business leaders? and in the ridiculous way that some CEOs parade themselves as if they were rock stars.

?Sales Training Improves Sales

A few years before he died, Peter Drucker was interviewed on NPR.? In that interview, he pointed out what should be obvious to everyone ? that all this talk about ?leadership? is a bunch of horse manure.

Sales Training Improves Sales

One reason I think of that image is that, in my experience, most of the time the ?leader? of the team is the person who found a parade and then got out in front of it.? (I once heard an executive in Fortune 50 company describe that odious behavior as ?smart business practice.?)
