Samsung reveals the Galaxy Music part budget phone, part mobile disco

When we first saw the name "Galaxy Music" in a Samsung press release a few weeks ago, we totally overlooked it among all the other budget Galaxy spin-offs. Now that it's official, the Galaxy Music (or equally the dual-SIM Galaxy Music Duos variant) turns out to be just that -- with Android 4.0 running on a low-res three-inch touchscreen and an unnamed processor. On the other hand, the handset does have some features that may be of interest to those who use their smartphone mainly for tunes (if not to full-blown audiophiles): there's a microSD slot for cheap storage, out-of-the-box compatibility with FLAC, OGG and many other file types, Sound Alive and SRS audio modes, a dedicated music player button, plus dual frontal speakers and a WVGA projector for sharing the love. Full specs at the source link.

Update: It's been sensibly pointed out there isn't much room for a projector on this handset, judging from the pictures above. Although the Samsung spec sheet lists one, and even its brightness, we're going to treat that spec as doubtful until it's proven otherwise.

(AP) ? An extremist Egyptian-born preacher entered a U.S. courtroom Saturday for the first time to face multiple terrorism charges, complaining that his prosthetic hooks, medication and special shoes were taken away from him. The preacher was one of five terror defendants rounded up in Britain and extradited overnight to the U.S.

Abu Hamza al-Masri was surrounded by several marshals in a Manhattan courtroom as he faced charges he conspired with Seattle men to set up a terrorist training camp in Oregon and helped abduct 16 hostages, two of them American tourists, in Yemen in 1998.

The 54-year-old, white-haired Al-Masri exposed both of his arms through his short-sleeved prison shirt. His court-appointed lawyer, Sabrina Shroff, asked that al-Masri, indicted under the name Mustafa Kamel Mustafa, have his prosthetics immediately returned "so he can use his arms."

In the 1990s, al-Masri turned London's Finsbury Park Mosque into a training ground for extremist Islamists, attracting men including Sept. 11 conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui and "shoe bomber" Richard Reid.

Al-Masri ? jailed since 2004 in Britain on separate charges ? was flown overnight to New York from London along with four others accused of U.S. embassy bombings in Africa and with helping terror operations in Afghanistan and Chechnya. The men, who could all face life in prison, have been battling extradition for between eight to 14 years.

U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara called the extraditions "a watershed moment in our nation's efforts to eradicate terrorism."

"As is charged, these are men who were at the nerve centers of al-Qaida's acts of terror, and they caused blood to be shed, lives to be lost, and families to be shattered."

In New York's federal court, Khaled al-Fawwaz and Adel Abdul Bary, entered not guilty pleas to charges that they participated in the bombings of embassies in Tanzania and Kenya in 1998. The attacks killed 224 people, including 12 Americans. They were indicted in a case that also charged Osama bin Laden.

In New Haven, Conn., Syed Talha Ahsan, 33, and Babar Ahmad, 38, entered not guilty pleas to charges that they provided terrorists in Afghanistan and Chechnya with cash, recruits and equipment.

Al-Masri, a one-time nightclub bouncer, entered no plea, saying only "I do" when he was asked by U.S. Magistrate Judge Frank Maas whether he swears that his financial affidavit used to determine if he qualifies for a court-appointed lawyer was correct.

Shroff told Maas that al-Masri needed use of his arms. "Otherwise, he will not be able to function in a civilized manner."

She also asked for a dictating machine, saying he can't take notes, the return of his diabetes medication and special shoes that prevent him from slipping. She said he will need a special diet and a full medical evaluation in prison.

Al-Masri peered through glasses as he consulted with Shroff and another court-appointed lawyer, Jerrod Thompson-Hicks, in a proceeding that lasted less than 15 minutes.

Al-Masri has one eye and claims to have lost his hands fighting the Soviets in Afghanistan. His lawyers in England said he suffers from depression, chronic sleep deprivation, diabetes and other ailments.

"I don't think he slept at all" on the overnight flight and hadn't eaten since arriving in New York at 2:40 a.m., Shroff said outside court. Still, she added, "He seemed very much like a gentleman."

Shroff and Thompson-Hicks also represented al-Fawwaz, 50, a citizen of Saudi Arabia. Thompson-Hicks said he was concerned whether his client would be properly treated for hypertension and high blood pressure. Attorney Andrew Patel, representing Bary, 52, an Egyptian citizen, said his client needed asthma medicine and treatment for other medical issues.

Patel, who declined to comment afterward, told Maas that Bary reserved the right to request bail in the future.

Four others who were tried in 2001 in the August 1998 bombings in Kenya and Tanzania are serving life sentences.

Ahsan, 33, and Ahmad, 38, were kept detained while they await trial in Connecticut, where an Internet service provider was allegedly used to host a website. Their lawyers declined to comment.

Ahmad made efforts to secure GPS devices, Kevlar helmets, night vision goggles, ballistic vests and camouflage uniforms, prosecutors said.

Al-Masri is not the first Egyptian-born preacher to be brought to Manhattan for trial. A blind sheik, Omar Abdel-Rahman, is serving a life sentence after he was convicted in 1995 in a plot to assassinate then-Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and in another to blow up New York landmarks, including the United Nations and two tunnels and a bridge linking New Jersey to Manhattan. Abdel-Rahman has numerous health issues, including heart trouble.

The overnight trip to the United States came after a multiyear extradition fight that ended Friday, when Britain's High Court ruled that the men had no more grounds for appeal and could be sent to the U.S. immediately.

"I'm absolutely delighted that Abu Hamza is now out of this country," British Prime Minister David Cameron said. "Like the rest of the public, I'm sick to the back teeth of people who come here, threaten our country, who stay at vast expense to the taxpayer and we can't get rid of them."

"I'm delighted on this occasion we've managed to send this person off to a country where he will face justice," he added.

Al-Masri has been in a British jail since 2004 on charges of inciting racial hatred and encouraging followers to kill non-Muslims.

While al-Masri has been portrayed in the British media as one of the most dangerous men in the country, the case against Ahmad in Connecticut has raised concerns among legal experts and human rights advocates.

Some lawyers and lawmakers have expressed concerns because Britain agreed to extradite the London computer expert even though his alleged crimes were committed in Britain; British courts declined to prosecute him for lack of evidence. Ahmad and Ahsan are accused of running websites to support Afghanistan's ousted Taliban regime, Chechen rebels and associated terrorist groups.

SpaceX launch problems come to light

By Alan Boyle

Although SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket successfully sent its Dragon cargo capsule toward the International Space Station, an engine failure and a less-than-nominal satellite deployment suggest that the company has some technical issues to resolve for future flights.

The California-based rocket company acknowledged soon after Sunday night's launch that one of the nine Merlin engines on the Falcon's first stage shut down, but the onboard computer recalculated the data for the other eight engines to get the Dragon in orbit and save the resupply mission.

Some observers pointed to SpaceX's long-range video of the ascent and pointed to what they thought was debris from an explosion. Today, SpaceX issued a statement?saying?that the engine didn't explode ??but that protective panels were ejected because of the pressure loss associated with the shutdown:

"Approximately one minute and 19 seconds into last night's launch, the Falcon 9 rocket detected an anomaly on one first-stage engine. Initial data suggests that one of the rocket's nine Merlin engines, Engine 1, lost pressure suddenly and an engine shutdown command was issued. We know the engine did not explode, because we continued to receive data from it. Panels designed to relieve pressure within the engine bay were ejected to protect the stage and other engines. Our review of flight data indicates that neither the rocket stage nor any of the other eight engines were negatively affected by this event.

"As designed, the flight computer then recomputed a new ascent profile in real time to ensure Dragon's entry into orbit for subsequent rendezvous and berthing with the ISS. This was achieved, and there was no effect on Dragon or the cargo resupply mission.

"Falcon 9 did exactly what it was designed to do. Like the Saturn V (which experienced engine loss on two flights) and modern airliners, Falcon 9 is designed to handle an engine-out situation and still complete its mission. No other rocket currently flying has this ability.

"It is worth noting that Falcon 9 shuts down two of its engines to limit acceleration to 5 G's even on a fully nominal flight. The rocket could therefore have lost another engine and still completed its mission.

"We will continue to review all flight data in order to understand the cause of the anomaly, and will devote the resources necessary to identify the problem and apply those lessons to future flights. We will provide additional information as it becomes available.

"Dragon is expected to begin its approach to the station on October 10, where it will be grappled and berthed by Akihiko Hoshide of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency and Expedition 33 Commander Sunita Williams of NASA. Over the following weeks, the crew will unload Dragon's payload and reload it with cargo to be returned to Earth. Splashdown is targeted for October 28."

There's a lingering question about the engine anomaly: What caused the sudden pressure loss?

Satellite in wrong orbit
Another question has yet to be fully resolved: What will happen to the Orbcomm OG2 telecommunication satellite, which rode into orbit as a secondary payload on the Falcon 9's second stage? The prototype satellite was supposed to be put into a highly inclined orbit after a second-stage restart, and serve as the first piece of a new 18-satellite telecom constellation.

On Sunday night, SpaceX said the satellite was "successfully deployed" ? but Orbcomm acknowledged in a statement today that the satellite was deployed into the wrong orbit because of the engine anomaly. Here's the relevant excerpt:

"... Due to an anomaly on one of the Falcon 9?s first-stage engines, the rocket did not comply with a pre-planned International Space Station (ISS) safety gate to allow it to execute the second burn. For this reason, the OG2 prototype satellite was deployed into an orbit that was lower than intended. Orbcomm and Sierra Nevada Corp. engineers have been in contact with the satellite and are working to determine if and the extent to which the orbit can be raised to an operational orbit using the satellite?s on-board propulsion system.

"In mid-2013, Orbcomm plans to launch an additional eight OG2 satellites on a Falcon 9, which will be placed into orbits that are optimized to deliver the best coverage for the enhanced OG2 messaging services. The remainder of the constellation of 18 OG2 satellites is expected to be launched on a Falcon 9 in 2014. Orbcomm?s OG2 satellites will be the primary payload on both of these two planned launches to directly insert the OG2 satellites into the operational orbit."

Orbcomm's statement came after satellite-watcher Jonathan McDowell?called attention to the fact that the satellite showed up in the Space-Track database as having a 203-by-323-kilometer orbit rather than the planned 350-by-750-kilometer orbit.

Looking on the bright side
Going forward, SpaceX should follow through on its pledge to "apply lessons to future flights," as it said in its statement. And skeptics should keep in mind that this is rocket science, which is "super-frickin'-damn-hard," to use SpaceX founder Elon Musk's words. It's a tribute to Musk's design that the Dragon's mission was unaffected by the loss of one rocket engine. On Sunday night, he pointed out in an email to NASA Watch that few if any other existing launch vehicles could have weathered that kind of problem: "I believe F9 is the only rocket flying today that, like a modern airliner, is capable of completing a flight successfully even after losing an engine."

What do you think? Does the Dragon's rise represent Falcon's finest hour, or do the problems point to a chink in SpaceX's armor? Feel free to weigh in with your comments below.

Update for 4:15 p.m. ET: I've updated SpaceX's previous update (which referred to an engine fairing) with the current update (which pointed to protective panels instead).

Update for 6:30 p.m. ET: I've added a link to the Orbcomm statement confirming that its OG2 satellite ended up in a lower-than-expected orbit.

PFT: Chiefs are threatening turnover records

Mark IngramAP

This was not what the Saints were expecting when they traded a future first-round pick to get running back Mark Ingram.

Then again, this wasn?t what Ingram was expecting either.

The Saints haven?t found much of a role for Ingram, who has rushed 32 times for 90 yards this season. That 2.8 yards per attempt average is second-lowest in the league.

But they also have him pigeonholed as a short-yardage back, working him with fullbacks and tight ends and what most people call a base offense. Other chances, such as when they spread the field and run at nickel defenses, aren?t available to him.

?Yeah, I mean possibly. There?s only one way to find out,? Ingram said, via Mike Triplett of the New Orleans Times-Picayune. ?But there?s lots of great guys on this team that need to have the ball, that need to have touches. There?s only one football.

?So I?m not the complaining type, I?m not a whining type. My No. 1 goal is to come in here and get better every day and help this team win games on Sundays. We have a lot of great guys, [Darren] Sproles, Pierre [Thomas], the receivers, the tight ends. We have a lot of guys to spread the ball around to, so I don?t complain.?

Of course, the failures aren?t just with Ingram, either. Over the past two games, 28 of their 37 run plays covered three yards or fewer.

?It?s obviously a problem for us. It?s certainly something we?ve talked about,? Saints right tackle Zach Strief said. ?I wish we could say, ?The line isn?t doing this or the backs aren?t doing this.? I wish I could say that, because it?s easier to fix. But it?s been single breakdowns. When the hole?s there we?re missing it, then the next play the hole?s not there. It?s hard to put your finger on.?

Ingram, on the other hand, has been easy to put a finger on, usually not long after he takes the hand-off. The idea that he?s not a quality back doesn?t square with the scouting report, but you wonder why they invested so heavily in him if they didn?t intend him to have a bigger role.

96% The Imposter

All Critics (93) | Top Critics (24) | Fresh (89) | Rotten (4)

The most fascinating aspect of the movie is why the missing boy's family believed the imposter's story.

You may begin to wonder if you aren't being conned by the movie yourself.

Beverly Dollarhide, Nicholas's mother, says of the period after her son's disappearance, "My main goal in life at that time was not to think." Apparently, the filmmakers have taken a cue from her.

Layton's dazzling film is an exciting, edge-of-your-seat experience superior to any Hollywood mystery you're likely to see for a long time.

"The Imposter" becomes more than just a missing-persons drama. It hints at something much darker: a real-life horror story, the full truth of which may never be known.

This is one creepy mystery.

Superbly crafted documentary about a missing teenager who mysteriously resurfaces after three years, prompting a riveting, better-than-fiction Cold Case-style drama.

If only the movie didn't almost glamorise Bourdin's action, they'd have been onto a real masterpiece.

If you are a fan of true crime stories or the workings of the human mind, The Imposter will blow you away.

... both interesting and repellent.

An unnerving experience and a brilliant piece of documentary filmmaking that peels back the layers on one of the most perplexing stories

Layton layers "The Imposter" with powerful images in the dramatic re-creations, as well as a brooding soundscape and a concise pacing that distributes its information with the reserve of a good mystery writer.

"The Imposter" may be the first movie since "Penn and Teller Get Killed" whose title may need its own spoiler alert.

Every bit as engaging as it is well-shot, it proves once more that truth is, indeed, stranger than fiction.

A mixture of documentary, mystery and thriller, which recounts an astonishing true story that gets more outrageous with each revelation

Strange and intriguing, searching for that elusive essence known as 'the perfect truth.'

Rather like watching a magician pulling off a trick which your eyes cannot see, The Imposter offers its own strange kind of magic.

The story is astonishing enough on its own, and The Imposter succeeds in enhancing its immediacy and intensity.

As his story unfolds, one gets the uncomfortable sensation that a joke is being played. But on whom?

One of the year's most provocative pictures.

Incredibly well-made and with a story you won't forget, "The Imposter" is one of the better docs of the season.

The Imposter emerges as a brilliantly slippery film that demands brain-stretching consideration. Astonishing, indeed.

It's an astounding story, truly, and Bourdin is the most chillingly sympathetic sociopath: frank, remorseless, matter-of-fact.

British director Bart Layton has only slightly fictionalised this extraordinary story for his documentary, which is told more as a thriller than a statement of hard fact.

PFT: Vick can't figure out all his fumbling

Tennessee Titans v Minnesota VikingsGetty Images

The Bills defense is the first in history to allow a quarterback to throw for 300 yards in the same game that his team runs for 300 yards.

Dolphins DT Randy Starks considers himself ?fortunate? to have come up with an interception that led to a touchdown in Miami?s win.

A big day for Patriots RB Stevan Ridley almost went sour when he fumbled in the fourth quarter.

An examination of the decisions made by Jets General Manager Mike Tannenbaum heading into this season finds them lacking.

Ravens S Ed Reed said he predicted the quarterback sneak by Chiefs QB Matt Cassel that wound up as a fumble recovered by Reed.

Said Bengals DT Domata Peko, ?We?should have had this one.?You could feel it in the locker room after the game. Tempers were flaring. Guys were mad. That?s different than years before. Nobody wants to lose around here. That?s going to carry us through.?

Browns WR Josh Gordon only caught two passes on Sunday, but both of them went for touchdowns.

The return of RB Rashard Mendenhall coincided with a strong day on the ground for the Steelers.

The Texans appear to be facing the Jets at the right moment.

Said Colts DE Cory Redding of the defense?s halftime adjustments, ?We just said, ?You know what? Enough is a e-freekin-nough. Put our foot down and let?s go after this ballgame and make them beat us.? Our attitude changed in the second half.?

Being the home team on a hot day didn?t do much for the Jaguars.

It wasn?t a great start for Titans QB Matt Hasselbeck.

Mark Kiszla of the Denver Post thinks Broncos coach John Fox lost his matchup with Patriots coach Bill Belichick.

Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles is fine with the team running him early and often.

DE Andre Carter feels ready to roll when the Raiders return from their bye.

Chargers WR Robert Meachem?s homecoming was a bright spot in the team?s loss.

It will come as no surprise to any Cowboys observer that Drew Pearson has decided to share another opinion about Dez Bryant.

Giants rookie RB David Wilson and WR Rueben Randle came up with performances that should quiet some of their critics.

Members of the Eagles defense lamented their failure to come up with a stop at the end of their loss to the Steelers.

A leap into the stands didn?t really go off as planned at the end of Redskins linebacker Ryan Kerrigan?s interception return for a touchdown.

Bears CB Charles Tillman and LB Lance Briggs are the first teammates in history to each return interceptions for touchdowns in two straight games.

Rookie WR Ryan Broyles is waiting for his shot with the Lions.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy said that the team?s underachieving starts with him.

WR Percy Harvin is the first Vikings player with a rushing, receiving and kick return touchdown in three straight seasons.

The Falcons are 5-0 for the first time in franchise history.

Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams wasn?t happy to hear from fantasy football players on Twitter.

Saints QB Drew Brees and WR Marques Colston made some nice music together on Sunday night.

The Buccaneers run defense should probably prepare itself for a heavy dose of the Chiefs ground game.

Cardinals wide receivers Larry Fitzgerald and Andre Roberts have made the most of their touches this season.

DE Robert Quinn has blossomed into the pass rusher the Rams envisioned he would be.

49ers WR Kyle Williams? 43-yard touchdown catch was his latest step away from being just the guy who fumbled in the NFC Championship Game.

Two sacks from DE Bruce Irvin helped the Seahawks hold on to beat the Panthers.

When It Arrives To Flooring There Are A - Home Improvement ...
