Michael Madsen Arrested for DUI, Hospitalized

You may not believe this, but Michael Madsen ran afoul of the law last night.

The troubled actor, who was booked in March for allegedly getting into an altercation with his son, was arrested this time on on suspicion of drunken driving after motorists saw his vehicle swerving on the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu and called 911.

In a field sobriety test, the actor came back with a blood alcohol level of .21, more than twice the legal limit of .08, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore.

In an unusual twist, Madsen complained of an undisclosed medical problem during his booking and spent the night at the hospital after deputies cited him for drunk driving and released him.

On the professional front, the star plays a role on the Hawaii Five-0 Season 3 premiere. It airs September 24.

Pro-euro parties sweep Dutch poll, Rutte ahead

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Mainstream pro-European parties were heading for an unexpectedly clear victory in a Dutch general election on Wednesday, exit polls showed, dispelling concerns that radical eurosceptics would gain sway in a core euro zone country.

An NOS/RTL poll broadcast as soon as voting ended at 9 p.m. (1900 GMT) gave caretaker Prime Minister Mark Rutte's centre-right Liberals 41 seats in the 150-member lower house, a one-seat lead over the centre-left Labor Party on 40.

The hard-left Socialists, who oppose austerity and euro zone bailouts, and the far-right anti-immigration Freedom Party, who together dominated early campaigning, polled far worse than forecast and Geert Wilders' anti-euro populists were set to lose some seats.

Nevertheless the Netherlands is likely to remain an awkward, tough-talking member of the single currency area, strongly resisting transfers to euro zone debtors, even if the two main parties end up forming a coalition.

If confirmed, the outcome makes it more likely that Rutte, with the strongest international profile, will remain premier.

"It's clear that voters came out with massive support for the VVD (Liberals)," said Stef Blok, parliamentary floor leader of Rutte's party. "That's good news, but we won't start forming a government until the final results are in."

The centrist Christian Democrats, who dominated most post-war Dutch governments until the mid-2000s and were junior partners in Rutte's outgoing cabinet, slumped to their worst result in decades and were tied for fourth place with the Freedom Party in the exit polls.

"This looks like a landslide for the pro-European parties," said Famke Krumbmueller, western Europe analyst at Eurasia Group in London. "A lot of the voters who were undecided - and there were a lot of those - probably decided to vote strategically either for the Right or the Left, for one of the big parties."

TWO-HORSE RACE

The campaign ended up as a two-horse race between Rutte, 45, a former Unilever human resources manager dubbed the "Teflon" prime minister because of his ability to brush off disasters, and energetic Labor leader Diederik Samsom, 41, a former Greenpeace activist whose debating flair impressed voters.

Both leaders voted early, Samsom with his wife and children in the university town of Leiden, and Rutte alone in a polling station inside his old primary school in The Hague.

The caretaker prime minister, whose minority centre-right government was toppled by Wilders in April out of hostility to spending cuts to cut the budget deficit, vowed to pursue his tough policy on euro zone bailouts.

"There is a real choice in this election - also in Europe," Rutte told reporters after he voted. "Will we continue with our close relationship with Germany and Finland in fighting the euro crisis or will it make a shift to a more France-oriented Europe, which I will be against.

"I would like to stay on course with our coalition with the northern European countries," he added, saying it was important for the Netherlands to come out of the crisis stronger by sticking to its policy of fiscal discipline.

Wilders, who advocated leaving the euro and the European Union and banning Muslim immigration, appeared to be the big loser, punished for having brought down the government.

The dyed-blonde firebrand voted in the Hague protected by state-provided bodyguards after receiving death threats due to his anti-Islam stance.

POLITICAL FRAGMENTATION

The Liberals and Labor have played down talk of forming a coalition together. But parliamentary arithmetic suggests this is the most probable outcome given the highly fragmented political landscape.

"The Liberals and Labor are destined to be together" Philip van Praag, a political analyst at the University of Amsterdam, told Dutch news agency ANP.

The Netherlands is one of the few triple-A rated countries left in Europe and a long-standing ally of Germany in demanding strict adherence to EU budget rules. The election was seen as a barometer of northern European stamina - both for austerity and for bailouts to keep the single currency bloc intact.

Dutch taxpayers are frustrated at demands for belt-tightening, especially the steady erosion of their cherished welfare state and pensions, while having to stump up billions of euros to rescue what they see as profligate budget sinners.

"People have become negative about Europe because we give so much money to Greece and other countries and at the same time we are aware of the fact that we badly need money here to pay for schools, for the army and everything," Jaap Paauwe, a professor of management at Tilburg University, said.

As the Dutch voted, Germany's Constitutional Court gave a green light for the country to ratify the euro zone's new rescue fund and budget pact but also veto powers to parliament over any future increases in the size of the fund. The court rejected requests from eurosceptics and leftists who argued Germany was too exposed to unlimited financial liability.

"VOTE FOR YOUR JOB"

With the focus on the euro zone crisis and its impact on the domestic economy, Europe took centre stage during the campaign, pushing immigration off the radar after nearly a decade.

Employers' groups representing big businesses such as consumer electronics giant Philips as well as small and medium-sized firms that form the backbone of the Dutch economy ran a campaign highlighting the benefits of EU membership.

The main employers' group hung a banner outside its head office in The Hague proclaiming: "Vote for Europe and your job."

In a pamphlet distributed to voters entitled "The Netherlands earns its living from Europe", business groups said the export-dependent economy would lose 90 billion euros a year in sales without the euro and the EU's internal market.

In contrast, one of the biggest unions posted a cartoon on its website showing the electoral battleground as the Last Chance Saloon with caricatures of Rutte and his allies stalking the saloon bars in the Wild West.

Wilders wanted to turn the election into a referendum on euro zone membership, denouncing the heavy burden carried by Henk and Ingrid, his Dutch stereotypes of Mr and Mrs Average. His campaign was damaged when a real-life Henk with a wife called Ingrid attacked and killed an immigrant.

Abreu suspended for kissing former team's emblem

Associated Press Sports

updated 1:53 p.m. ET Sept. 12, 2012

SAO PAULO (AP) -Uruguay striker Sebastian Abreu has been suspended for one match for kissing the emblem of a former team to provoke rival fans in a Brazilian league match last month.

Abreu was playing for Figueirense against Flamengo when he lifted his shirt and on a jersey underneath kissed the emblem of Botafogo, the main rival of Flamengo.

The shirt also bore the emblem of Nacional, his former team in Uruguay, and photos of his children.

Brazil's sports tribunal imposed the suspension, saying the incident encouraged violent behavior from Flamengo fans.

The punishment means little, however, as the ban will be served when Figueirense plays Cruzeiro later Wednesday and Abreu is with Uruguay for South American World Cup qualifying.

Reds give closer Chapman some rest

CINCINNATI (AP) ? The Reds are giving closer Aroldis Chapman a few days off to rest his tired pitching shoulder.

The left-hander struggled with his control and only hit 96 mph on the radar gun Monday night during a 14-inning, 4-3 win over Pittsburgh. Normally, his fastball is in the range of 98 mph to 101 mph.

Chapman walked three of the five batters he faced in the 10th inning and had to be taken out during an inning for the first time this season. Afterward, he was examined and diagnosed with a tired shoulder.

Chapman moved into the closer's role this season for the first time in his career. He has made a career-high 64 appearances, converting 35 of 40 saves with a 1.60 ERA.

"We're lucky we got him to this point," Baker said. "When you throw 100 mph, you're bound to tweak something sooner or later. He's at a plateau he's never reached before. This is another step in learning how to be a closer."

The Reds needed a closer after Ryan Madson tore a ligament in his pitching elbow during spring training. Left-hander Sean Marshall got the first chance to win the job and struggled.

Chapman set a club record when he didn't allow an earned run in his first 24 appearances of the season. He moved into the closer's role on May 20 after Baker gave him time to ease into late-inning pressure situations.

Chapman had a club-record streak of 27 consecutive saves broken on Friday when he gave up three runs in a 5-3 loss to Houston. His fastball had its usual zip in that game.

The closer said Tuesday that he's felt no pain in the shoulder.

"It is a little fatigued," Chapman said, with a trainer translating. "I started feeling it a couple of games back. I just wasn't myself. It's nothing major. There's nothing wrong. I just feel weak.

"I think in five days or a week I should be ready."

Jonathan Broxton, acquired from Kansas City at the trade deadline, could take over the role while Chapman rests.

Baker said the club is watching Chapman closely as he learns how to pace himself in workouts between appearances.

"We monitored him as closely as we monitor anybody," Baker said. "He's still learning the role and how to handle the workload off the field. You don't want to wear yourself out training, but you want to train some. The guy works hard."

Scrub jays react to their dead, bird study shows: 'Funerals' can last for up to half an hour

ScienceDaily (Sep. 11, 2012) ? Western scrub jays summon others to screech over the body of a dead jay, according to new research from the University of California, Davis. The birds' cacophonous "funerals" can last for up to half an hour.

Anecdotal reports have suggested that other animals, including elephants, chimpanzees and birds in the crow family, react to dead of their species, said Teresa Iglesias, the UC Davis graduate student who carried out the work. But few experimental studies have explored this behavior.

The new research by Iglesias and her colleagues appears in the Aug. 27 issue of the journal Animal Behaviour.

Western scrub jays live in breeding pairs and are not particularly social birds.

"They're really territorial and not at all friendly with other scrub-jays," Iglesias said.

Working in the backyards of homes in Davis, Calif., Iglesias set up feeding tables to encourage visits from the jays. Then she videotaped their behavior when she placed a dead jay on the ground. She compared these reactions with the birds' behavior when confronted with a dead jay that had been stuffed and mounted on a perch, a stuffed horned owl, and wood painted to represent jay feathers.

On encountering a dead jay, prostrate on the ground, jays flew into a tree and began a series of loud, screeching calls that attracted other jays. The summoned birds perched on trees and fences around the body and joined in the calling. These cacophonous gatherings could last from a few seconds to as long as 30 minutes.

Jays formed similar cacophonous gatherings in response to a mounted owl, but ignored painted wood. When confronted with a mounted jay, the birds swooped in on it as if it were an intruder.

Jays typically gathered within seconds of the first bird calling, Iglesias said. If they did not, the first jay would often fly higher into a tree, apparently to call more widely.

"It looked like they were actively trying to attract attention," she said.

The purpose of the calls seems to be to alert other birds of danger, Iglesias said. But why the calls summon others, rather than warning them off, is unclear. Having more jays present might mean more eyes to locate a predator, or more numbers to drive it away, she speculates.

There might also be a learning component to the gatherings, if they help teach young jays about dangers in the environment, Iglesias said.

While reactions of animals to their dead are sometimes called "funerals," that does not imply that there is an emotional or ritual element to the behavior, Iglesias said. We simply don't know enough about the emotional life of animals to understand that.

But Iglesias isn't ruling it out. "I think there's a huge possibility that there is much more to learn about the social and emotional lives of birds," she said.

Co-authors of the paper are UC Davis scientists Gail Patricelli, a professor of evolution and ecology, and Richard McElreath, an associate professor of anthropology.

Their work was supported by a Gates Millennium Graduate Scholarship from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and UC Davis funds to support graduate students.

Single-family L House in Scharten, Austria

by Simona Ganea, posted in Architecture, on September 10th, 2012

House L is a single family home located in Scharten, Austria. It was built in 2008 and the circumstances were quite unusual. There was a competition, something that is very unconventional for a single-family home, and the winner was Schneider & Lengauer. They then tried to respond to the client?s specific requirements. The client?s request included the demand for a residential and working environment that takes full advantage of the qualities of the site.

Also, another request specified the great importance of an energy-efficient design. The final major request was for the house to reflect the clients? passion and love for the color white. It?s very easy to see that this last request was respected throughout the design. As for the rest of them, we need to take a closer look.

The house has become the home of a family of four and their two pet cats. The same building also houses the graphic design studio of the client and displays the owner?s personal photo collection. Moreover, since the house sits on a hilltop, it also benefits from wonderful views of the piedmont and the peaks of the Northern Limestone Alps. The internal structure is functionally organized. The upper floor includes the bedrooms, the bathrooms and the ancillary rooms. The house also has an open living area in the basement and a two-car garage. In addition, the main level includes dining and living areas as well as a music room and a library.{found on archdaily and pics by Kurt Hoerbst}.
