Brainy beverage: Study reveals how green tea boosts brain cell production to aid memory

ScienceDaily (Sep. 5, 2012) ? It has long been believed that drinking green tea is good for the memory. Now researchers have discovered how the chemical properties of China's favorite drink affect the generation of brain cells, providing benefits for memory and spatial learning.

The research is published in Molecular Nutrition & Food Research.

"Green tea is a popular beverage across the world," said Professor Yun Bai from the Third Military Medical University, Chongqing, China. "There has been plenty of scientific attention on its use in helping prevent cardiovascular diseases, but now there is emerging evidence that its chemical properties may impact cellular mechanisms in the brain."

Professor Bai's team focused on the organic chemical EGCG, (epigallocatechin-3 gallate) a key property of green tea. While EGCG is a known anti-oxidant, the team believed it can also have a beneficial effect against age-related degenerative diseases.

"We proposed that EGCG can improve cognitive function by impacting the generation of neuron cells, a process known as neurogenesis," said Bai. "We focused our research on the hippocampus, the part of the brain which processes information from short-term to long-term memory."

The team found that EGCG boosts the production of neural progenitor cells, which like stem cells can adapt, or differentiate, into various types of cells. The team then used laboratory mice to discover if this increased cell production gave an advantage to memory or spatial learning.

"We ran tests on two groups of mice, one which had imbibed EGCG and a control group," said Bai. "First the mice were trained for three days to find a visible platform in their maze. Then they were trained for seven days to find a hidden platform."

The team found that the EGCG treated mice required less time to find the hidden platform. Overall the results revealed that EGCG enhances learning and memory by improving object recognition and spatial memory.

"We have shown that the organic chemical EGCG acts directly to increase the production of neural progenitor cells, both in glass tests and in mice," concluded Bai. "This helps us to understand the potential for EGCG, and green tea which contains it, to help combat degenerative diseases and memory loss."

Where'd the time go? Obama girls now young women

NEW YORK (AP) ? Who are those tall, willowy young women with Barack and Michelle Obama ? and where'd they hide little Sasha and Malia?

Four years is a long time when it's a half or a third of your life, and so TV viewers who haven't seen the Obama girls much since 2008 may be truly startled at just how much they've grown when they appear after their father's speech Thursday night.

"It's kind of like coming home for Christmas after many years," says Douglas Wead, author and expert on presidential offspring. "People are going to be very surprised."

"We're really going to be seeing them as young women," says Sandra Sobieraj, a correspondent for People magazine who has long covered first families. "It will be stunning, because we don't see them regularly. There hasn't been a steady stream of images to relate to."

Malia is now 14, and this week started (gasp!) high school. Sasha is 11, now in sixth grade. Malia is nearly as tall as her parents: "Even though she's 5-9, she's still my baby," Obama said two years ago. As for Sasha, her parents told People last month that she's grown a foot in the last year, and suddenly resists cuddling.

It's hard to believe that only four years ago, at the 2008 convention in Denver, Sasha, then 7, fidgeted in her purple frock, little white barrettes on either side of her head. "Daddy, what city are you in?" she called out in a high-pitched voice as her dad appeared on a huge video screen the night of Michelle Obama's speech. "I love you, Daddy!" called out Malia, 10, looking a bit older in a two-toned dress with straps.

Then came the iconic images on election night in Chicago. There was Sasha in a black party dress, bounding gleefully up into her father's arms, planting a big kiss on his cheek ? a reminder that young children were about to live in the White House for the first time since Chelsea Clinton, Amy Carter, and before them, the younger Kennedy kids, Caroline and John.

And of course there was the inauguration. Who could resist the sight of Malia, in a periwinkle-blue coat and fluffy black scarf, snapping pictures from her enviable perch on the inaugural podium?

Just the night before, she and Sasha, whose inaugural outfit was a light pink coat, had danced onstage with the Jonas Brothers ? a perfect example of how, as much as her parents vowed to keep their lives as normal as possible, the girls were truly celebrities from Day One.

For the president and first lady, protecting their privacy was an evolving skill. Candidate Obama quickly regretted, for example, an all-family interview granted to the TV show "Access Hollywood."

Once the family arrived at the White House, strict arrangements were in place. The news media traditionally respects the privacy of a president's young children and doesn't photograph or report on them unless they are in a public setting with their parents.

Yet the couple constantly talks about their kids. At times the president has embarrassed them, as when he told an audience that Malia once got a 73 on a science test. (He later apologized.)

Two years ago, when Malia first went to summer camp, the White House discouraged mention of it in the media, even though Obama mentioned it in interviews. And recently he revealed the state where both daughters had just spent a month at camp ? New Hampshire.

"They just love talking about their girls," says Sobieraj. "They get genuine joy from them, and so they talk about it. To a degree that makes the staff uncomfortable, because the line is shifting."

Other White House kids have led less public lives, perhaps a function of the times. Jackie Kennedy was so concerned about keeping her kids out of view that she organized kindergarten for Caroline inside the White House. (She was out of town when her husband allowed those famous photos of Caroline and John in the Oval Office to be taken, Wead says.)

And Bill and Hillary Rodham Clinton were extremely protective of Chelsea, who entered the White House at an awkward stage. Her parents were furious when Mike Myers referred to their daughter in an insulting way on "Saturday Night Live"; the comic later apologized.

Whereas many White House children through history seem to suffer some sort of embarrassment or scandal, the Obama girls have had none.

"Compared to other White House families, this is clearly the most functional," says Wead, who chronicles a host of misfortunes of past White House kids in his book, "All the President's Children." (He's now working on a book about White House siblings.) "This has been one of the most successful stories."

One reason, he says, may be that the Obamas clearly relish spending time with their kids. The first family is well known to have dinner together in the White House most nights; Michelle Obama in her convention speech evoked the image of the family "strategizing about middle-school friendships."

That will likely help the president avoid some of the guilt that, Wead says, has afflicted some presidents of the past who spent little time with their offspring ? like that which he says overcame Ulysses S. Grant on the occasion of his daughter's White House wedding. She left on her honeymoon, and Wead says the president then collapsed on her bed and wept.

"He had been so busy as president that he felt he had missed her life," Wead says. "It all had happened too fast for him."

Why Bill Clinton Made the Best Case for Re ... - Yahoo! Finance

There was a reason that former President Bill Clinton spoke last night at the Democratic Convention instead of introducing President Obama tonight, Yahoo! News political columnist Jeff Greenfield says.

Clinton's speaking skills are so prodigious that he might have upstaged the president.

And in his 50-minute speech last night, Clinton certainly reminded the country why he was elected President twice in the 1990s.

Embellishing heavily on his prepared remarks, Clinton made the speech the Democrats have been waiting for someone to make, Greenfield says -- a speech that the Democrats needed to make.

Clinton went into deep detail on many policy issues, rebutting most of the Republican attacks against Obama as he went. But unlike many policy wonks, he did so in a way that remained accessible to ordinary Americans.

He poked at Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan without hauling off and trashing them, the way some other Democratic speakers have. In one of the biggest applause lines, Clinton complimented Paul Ryan for having the "brass" to criticize Obama for diverting $716 billion from Medicare when, in his own budget, Ryan had done exactly the same thing.

Overall, Clinton made the best case anyone has made to date for why Barack Obama should be reelected. And he did so with a spirit of centrist inclusiveness that has been so lacking in the partisan politics of recent years.

So, what's next?

After President Obama delivers his own speech tonight, what are the key events in the two months leading up to the November election?

There are the debates, obviously. And beyond that, Greenfield says, there's the potential for a "black swan" -- a major unexpected twist that could push the election one way or another.

(AP) ? The late Rev. Sun Myung Moon, the Unification Church founder who died this week at 92, had 13 children with his second wife, Hak Ja Han Moon, according to the church. He and his wife are revered by followers as the "True Parents," but their children have suffered estrangements, deaths, suicide, lawsuits, public bickering, the airing of intimate secrets ? and one reality TV show appearance. Here's a look at some of the more prominent Moon children:

HYO-JIN MOON

The Moons' eldest son, he reportedly died of a heart attack in 2008. Born in 1962, he was a musician and producer and recorded more than a dozen albums, according to a church-affiliated website. His former wife, Nonsook Hong, claimed he was an alcoholic and drug addict who beat her, including while she was seven months pregnant with their fifth child. He was given huge amounts of cash by his mother that he used to buy cocaine and throw parties, Hong told the U.S. television news program "60 Minutes" in 1998. She said she was chosen by the Rev. Moon to marry Hyo-jin when she was 15.

HYUN-JIN PRESTON MOON

Born in 1969, he went to Columbia and Harvard Business School and twice competed in the Olympics for the South Korean equestrian team, according to the church-affiliated website. He played a leading role in church business and media interests, including the Washington Times newspaper, but he has also been involved in rifts with his siblings and parents. His company sued his mother's missionary group in 2011, demanding the return of more than $22 million the company claimed was sent without its consent to her group. A court ruled that the money was a loan but ordered it returned, the church said. Preston is still in charge of a church organization in the United States, Unification Church International, but church officials said they have asked him to leave the job.

HYUNG-JIN SEAN MOON

Born in New York in 1979 and educated at Harvard, he is the Moons' youngest son and the church head. He practiced Buddhism when younger, shaving his head and wearing monastic robes, and said he turned to the religion after a brother died in what U.S. officials called a suicide. He said he worried about his father's reaction to the religious decision but the Rev. Moon told followers not to criticize him. He titled a book of his essays, "A Bald Head and a Strawberry." He was chosen to lead the church in 2008. He is more fluent in English than Korean, and many of his English sermons are designed to appeal to young followers.

KOOK-JIN JUSTIN MOON

Justin, 42, was the last of the children born in South Korea and also went to Harvard, the church website said. He runs the Tongil Group, the church's business arm, and owns U.S.-based gun manufacturer Kahr Arms.

YEON-JIN KAT MOON

Born in the United States, she is a graduate of New York University in journalism and economics, according to the church-affiliated website. She also briefly appeared on a TV reality show in the U.S., "Survival of the Richest," in 2006. Press reviews of the first episode reported her family fortune as $989 million and said she claimed to suffer from "chronic boredom" ? and that she was voted off the show by the other rich kids at the end of the first episode.

YOUNG-JIN MOON

The 21-year-old committed suicide in 1999 by jumping from the 17th floor of a hotel in downtown Reno, Nevada, local officials said. He had been visiting the University of Nevada campus and considering whether to study hotel management there or at home in Las Vegas, church officials said at the time. Young-jin was said to not be heavily involved in the church. A church newsletter said his November 1997 wedding "set the stage for the blessing of 3.6 million couples worldwide."

HEUNG-JIN MOON

The 17-year-old died in 1984 when the car he was driving collided with a tractor-trailer in New York. He had been engaged to the prima ballerina daughter of Bo Hi Pak, the head of the church's Korean Cultural Foundation, and their wedding went ahead as planned despite his death. He was wed posthumously in a "spiritual" marriage to Julia Moon, who is now a prominent figure in South Korea's arts scene.

UN-JIN MOON

Un-jin, another daughter, told "60 Minutes" in 1998 that she was estranged from her parents. When she told her parents that her husband beat her, they responded that she deserved it, she said. She also told the TV program that she knew Moon had at least one illegitimate son.

SUNG-JIN MOON

Sung-jin was born in 1946 to Rev. Moon and his first wife, Choi Sun-kil. He lives in Japan, according to church officials and a church defector, Lee Young-sun.

IN-JIN MOON

The Moons' third daughter was born in South Korea and moved to the United States with her family in 1973, the church-affiliated website said. She went to Columbia and Harvard and was appointed president and CEO of the Unification Church in America in August 2008, according to the website.

Card Hunter combines tabletop gaming with digital magic | Joystiq

Jon Chey is a co-founder of Irrational Games, who recently formed up a brand new studio called Blue Manchu, to work on a new game called Card Hunter. Card Hunter might easily be mistaken for many similar games of much lower quality: It's a Flash game that runs in your browser, and it's going to be a free-to-play title monetized by microtransactions, using collectible cards to fuel the gameplay.

While Card Hunter may look shallow on the surface, it's anything but. Chey and his team have crafted what's essentially a love letter to tabletop gaming, combining mechanics usually meant for traditional board gaming (like game boards, cardboard cutouts, dice, and action cards) with a high-quality and well-designed video game.

Card Hunter obviously uses cards as a central part of its game rules, but the overall structure is that of a pen-and-paper D&D game. The proceedings are run by a dungeonmaster (named Gary, of course), who describes the settings and plot in colorful detail, while the actual graphics show off old-school game boards, and little cutout figurines for each character. Each character gets a set of cards per turn to play out as you like, and those cards equate to various movements or actions each character can make.

A warrior, for example, might play a run card to move a few spaces into range of a foe, and then an attack card to swing an axe and do damage. A mage might play a fireball card to lay down a spell that hits three enemies in range, or a paladin would play a heal spell card to heal himself or another party member. The player and enemies go back and forth playing cards one at a time (following the rules on each card), and then whenever both players choose to pass (which means you've either run out of cards or don't want to play whatever cards you have left), new cards are dealt out for each character, and the next turn moves on.

The gameplay is simple once you figure out the cycle, and Card Hunter has been polished thoroughly and carefully until it shines: The cards are clear and easy to understand, the graphical effects of spells and movement and attack ranges are laid out with precision, and the pieces move around the gameboard in perfect detail.

Probably the game's best mechanic, however, is how the cards in each character's deck are determined. Chey believes that while Magic: The Gathering's deck-building metagame has a lot of fun complexity (and indeed, Magic's creator Richard Garfield worked on Card Hunter), it's a little too complex, especially when you're dealing with multiple characters and a browser-based UI. So instead, Card Hunter boils down your deck choices into six item slots, and any items you pick up and equip in the game then determine which cards are in your deck.

A magical greatsword, for example, might give you some attack cards with a certain amount of damage or status effects on them, or Boots of Running might add more powerful movement cards that will come up randomly on each turn. Chey says the item abstraction means "a much smaller decision space" for the player, which should make deck-building easier to do. Some items can balance out very powerful cards with debuff cards as well: One powerful magical item forces the player to include two "Mind Leak" cards in their deck, which are harmful debuffs that must be played when dealt out.

The items also allow Card Hunter to be monetized, though the actual model for how players will earn items and fill their inventory hasn't been determined just yet. But there will likely be both an in-game and a real-money currency: Gold and "Pizza Slices" were both spotted in the demo.

Chey and Blue Manchu have done some really fascinating work with Card Hunter. The studio was created to make sure "niche" games continue to be made, and Card Hunter certainly does have a lot of elements that appeal to fans of more traditional (and now niche) gametypes. But Card Hunter, which Chey believes wouldn't be too hard to put together on iOS following its Flash version, might find itself played by a larger mainstream audience.

Prince Harry jokes about nude snaps at charity awards

Britain's Prince Harry on Monday made light of his recent exploits in his first public appearance since naked photographs of him in a Las Vegas hotel room surfaced on the internet.

Speaking at a London awards ceremony for seriously ill youngsters and their carers, Harry conceded it would be difficult to adequately describe their achievements.

"But never one to be shy in coming forward, I'll give it a go," he said to laughs from the audience.

However, the prince acted swiftly to ensure a six-year old boy, who earlier threatened to embarrass the royal, behaved himself.

Alex Logan was asked by ITV News before the ceremony what he would say to the royal and replied: "I'm glad you've got your clothes on Prince Harry".

Debbie Logan, the youngster's mother, later revealed that Harry said to her son "you keep looking up at your mum, looks like your dying to say something but you know she will tell you off.

"I heard you were on ITV earlier, you said something cheeky, let's not talk about that here," added the prince.

Harry, 27, was photographed naked with a mystery woman during a game of "strip billiards" in a Las Vegas hotel suite.

The images, first published on a US website last Wednesday, rapidly went viral and caused a furore in Britain.

Harry was speaking at the awards ceremony for WellChild, a UK-based charity of which he is patron.
