Online Retail Sales Index monthly update - November 2012

09 January 2013

Online Retail Sales Index surges ahead of Christmas, but year-on-year growth only edged higher to 27%.

  • In the twelve months to November 2012, Australians spent around $12.6 billion on online retail. This level is equivalent to 5.7% of the scale of traditional bricks & mortar retail (excluding caf?s, restaurants and takeaway food) for the year to October 2012.
  • The NAB Online Retail Sales Index surged in November ? rising to 241 points (compared with 209 points in October). However it is important to note that November is the peak month for online retail sales ? with consumers allowing adequate time for delivery of their purchases prior to Christmas.
  • This seasonality is evident in the growth rate of the index, with online sales rising by +27% in November, only marginally stronger than the growth rate recorded in October (+26%). The rate of growth in November 2012 was stronger than the level a year earlier, with growth of +20% recorded in November 2011.
  • Growth in online sales has consistently outperformed that of the traditional bricks & mortar sector. In October, traditional sales increased by +2.6% year-on-year (on a non-seasonally adjusted basis). When seasonal factors are included, growth rates for traditional retail edged higher, to +2.8%.

In the two previous years, there has been a notable decline in online sales in December, due to the delivery time required prior to Christmas. As the online market matures, it will be interesting to observe whether consumers have greater confidence to make online purchases later in the month in 2012.

Washington National Cathedral to celebrate same-sex weddings

The National Cathedral is seen after a crane collapsed from the building in Washington Sept. 7, 2011.

By Becky Bratu, NBC News

Same-sex weddings may now be celebrated at the Washington National Cathedral, making the church that holds presidential inaugural prayer services one of the first Episcopal congregations to use a rite adapted from an existing blessing ceremony approved last summer.

?Washington National Cathedral has a long history of advancing equality for people of all faiths and perspectives,? the Very Rev. Gary Hall, dean of Washington National Cathedral, said in a news release Wednesday.

"For more than 30 years, the Episcopal Church has prayed and studied to discern the evidence of God?s blessing in the lives of same-sex couples," he added. "We enthusiastically affirm each person as a beloved child of God ? and doing so means including the full participation of gays and lesbians in the life of this spiritual home for the nation.?

The 106-year-old cathedral draws hundreds of thousands of visitors, hosting presidential inaugural services, including for Ronald Reagan, George Bush and Barack Obama, and funerals for Ronald Reagan and Gerald Ford.

The diocese covers the district and four counties in Maryland, where same-sex marriage is legal. The Rt. Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde, the Episcopal bishop of Washington, decided in December to allow an expansion of the Christian marriage sacrament. Hall, who has been an ordained minister for more than 35 years, ultimately led the cathedral?s decision and adaptation of the same-sex rite. He told The Associated Press he began performing same-sex blessings in 1990 when he served at All Saints Church in Pasadena, Calif.

?I consider it a great honor to lead this Cathedral as it takes another historic step toward greater equality?and I am pleased that this step follows the results made clear in this past November?s election, when three states voted to allow same-sex marriage,? Hall said in the news release.

Weddings at the cathedral will be conducted as Christian marriages, so at least one person in the couple must have been baptized. According to the news release, only couples directly affiliated with the life of the cathedral as members of the congregation, alumni, volunteers, donors or those judged by the dean to have played an exceptional role in the life of the nation are eligible to be married at the cathedral.

It will likely be six months to a year before the first gay marriages are performed at the cathedral due to its busy schedule and its pre-marital counseling requirement, the AP said.

At its General Convention last summer, the U.S. Episcopal Church became the biggest church in the United States to approve a provisional rite for blessing gay unions.

The Episcopal Church is an independent U.S.-based church affiliated with the worldwide Anglican Communion. The church has about 2 million members, most in the United States.

Same-sex marriage is now legal in nine states and the District of Columbia. Illinois and Rhode Island are also set to take up bills to possibly join them, and the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear cases on gay marriage in March.

But Hall told the AP he sees marriage as a human issue, not a political issue.

"It is my hope and prayer that, if all of us open ourselves to the fullness and diversity of our nation?s many voices, we will learn to walk together in a new way as we listen for God?s call to us to be faithful to each other and to God,? Hall said in the news release.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Ralph and Peggy Burnet have paid $2.75 million for a home in southwest Minneapolis at 4218 Fremont Ave. S. near Lake Harriet. The sale closed on Dec. 20, but the deal became public on Tuesday through a certificate of real estate value (CRV) filed with Hennepin County.

The seller was Donald C. MacMillan as the trustee of the Donald C. MacMillan Living Trust. MacMillan is one of the heirs of the extended Cargill family, which owns the privately held Cargill Inc., based in Wayzata.

The deal appears connected to a sale that closed on the same day: The Burnets sold their Wayzata home at 392 and 410 Ferndale Road South to MacMillan as the trustee for the Donald C. MacMillan Living Trust on the same date for $9.1 million. Finance & Commerce reported on that sale last week.

Ralph Burnet founded Burnet Realty and remains chairman of the Edina-based Coldwell Banker Burnet, which is now owned by New Jersey-based NRT LLC. Burnet developed the Le Meridien Chambers, a boutique hotel in downtown Minneapolis, and was part of the development team for W Minneapolis ? The Foshay, which converted a vintage downtown Minneapolis office building into a hotel.

The Burnets previously sold off a vacant, 2.5-acre piece of the Wayzata property for $4.55 million in late 2011.

The Minneapolis home previously sold for $2.1 million in December 2000. The property has a current assessed value of $2.48 million, according to Hennepin County property tax records.

The CRV is available here.

best hosting companies

One thing that tends to not be mentioned much in the Internet Marketing world is the importance of choosing a good hosting account for your site. Not only that, but you want to choose the right one the first time around. Nothing?s worst than having an awesome site, with a follow, but then your visitors are unable to use your site because your servers down. This not only hurts your revenue, but it also hurts your reputation.

Go to any good web host and you will see a variety of hosting packages advertised by them, all with different features, technical applications and other bells and whistles. So if you are new to the world of hosting and don?t know your way from Shared to Reseller and Dedicated to Cloud hosting, you may want to read this article. It will help you understand the different types of hosting accounts as well as which one you should choose for your sites.

Shared Hosting: Easily the most common type of hosting you will see being used on the web. In a Shared Hosting environment, a host?s server and its resources are shared by several customers, which makes this type of hosting extremely economical and ideal for personal and small micro sites. On the flip side, the moment your site exceeds the allocated bandwidth, you may be asked to upgrade to a dedicated server, and your sites may be taken down temporarily.

Reseller Hosting: Interested in setting up your own web hosting business? Then reseller hosting is what you need. Once you sign up for this type of hosting, you get all the tools to set up your own hosting and offer services to others. You get to brand your hosting business and create payment plans, services and prices. Of course, be careful in promising only those services that your parent host is providing!

VPS and Dedicated Hosting: For serious businesses only! If your site has a daily traffic running into thousands and you require top of the line speed, robust platforms and security for your server, look at VPS and dedicated hosting. They don?t come cheap, but are worth every penny if your site is a real money maker for you.

Cloud-based Hosting: Cloud hosting is a relatively recent service and is based on cloud computing technologies. From a hosting perspective, all the services provided by a web host are run on several servers; hence, if one device in a network fails, the other computing systems on the network will manage your site and its applications. The big boys of Internet Marketing use cloud based hosting for their product launches.

Most of the good hosting companies offer all the above types of hosting packages. Whatever you do, don?t cut corners on a hosting account. If your site is growing and is a core part of your business, plan to upgrade from a Shared hosting account to a Dedicated one. It?ll cost more, but will pay back in the longer run. Likewise, if you are anticipating a temporary spike in traffic in near future, for instance your new product launch, look at Cloud hosting, as it can be scaled as per the usage. You don?t want your visitors and prospective customers to see a ?Site not Available? at the launch, do you?

So there you are-various types of hosting packages and their features. Hopefully, you will now be able to make an informed choice on which hosting account to sign up for.

UK stores suffer lacklustre Christmas sales - BRC

LONDON (Reuters) - British retailers suffered from lacklustre sales last month, as a tough economy limited consumer spending in the run-up to Christmas when many stores make most of their profits, a leading trade body said on Tuesday.

The British Retail Consortium said the total value of goods sold was up just 1.5 percent from December 2011, while on a like-for-like basis which excludes new floorspace sales were only 0.3 percent higher.

With annual consumer price inflation currently running at 2.7 percent, this suggests that stores sold less in real terms, increasing the chance that Britain's economy slipped back into contraction in the last three months of 2012.

"This rather underwhelming result brings a year of minimal sales growth to a close," said Helen Dickinson, the BRC's new director general.

So far, 2013 has showed few signs of being any better than 2012, and a greater number of stores were at risk of closure, she added.

"Retailers will be hoping that a continuing boost from post-Christmas sales events strengthens January's figures, but unfortunately there are few signs that their sense of 'running fast to stand still' is likely to ease off any time soon."

The BRC figures contrast with a more upbeat survey from the British Chambers of Commerce for the economy as a whole, also released on Tuesday, which showed a broad rise in sentiment across businesses in the last three months of 2012.

According to the BRC, online sales put in the strongest performance, showing annual growth of almost 18 percent, as one of the wettest Decembers on record kept shoppers at home.

Overall, December's figures marked a slowdown both from November, when sales grew 1.8 percent in total and 0.4 on a like-for-like basis, and from December 2011, when there was 4.1 percent total sales growth.

The rise in December 2011 in part represented a rebound from December 2010, when heavy snow depressed sales.

British retailers themselves have reported mixed fortunes so far, with upmarket department stores John Lewis and House of Fraser posting solid sales growth, while supermarket chain Wm Morrison - which lacks an online operation - reported a fall in underlying sales.

Debenhams posts record Christmas sales

LONDON (Reuters) - Debenhams , Britain's No. 2 department store group, posted record Christmas sales, helped by its breadth of products, appeal to a wide range of customers and online offer.

The group said on Tuesday sales at stores open over a year, rose 5.0 percent in the five weeks to January 5.

Debenhams said in the 18 weeks to January 5 period, a big chunk of the firm's fiscal first half, like-for-like sales rose 2.9 percent.

That compares to analysts' consensus forecast for the first half to end-February of an increase of 2 percent.

Online sales over the 18 weeks jumped 39 percent.

The firm said there was some increase in its promotional activity in the run-up to Christmas.

As a result, it now expects gross margin for the 2012-13 year to be 10 basis points higher than last year rather than 20 basis points previously guided.

Many store groups are finding the going tough as consumers fret over job security and a squeeze on incomes.

Debenhams has generally bucked the gloomy trend, also helped by its multiple routes to market and well received marketing campaign.

Lexus' autonomous Advanced Active Safety Research Vehicle and why we're not ready for selfdriving cars

Self-driving cars aren't just the future, they're the present. Sort of. They're out there, but you can't buy one just yet. Google of course has made waves with its driverless car and not too long ago Nissan impressed us at CEATEC with its self-driving NSC-2015. Toyota, perhaps feeling a little left out, has taken to CES to show off the Lexus Advanced Active Safety Research Vehicle, a machine capable of self-driving that, regardless, is still quite reliant on a fleshbag driver behind the wheel. Join us after the break for an explanation.

Judge: Release unredacted Calif priest files

(AP) ? A Los Angeles judge has ordered the release of personnel files that would identify Roman Catholic priests accused of child molestation.

Superior Court Judge Emilie Elias also said Monday that she wants the Archdiocese of Los Angeles to unredact the names of church higher-ups.

How long the process will take remains unclear. Church attorneys expressed concern about combing through 30,000 pages of documents.

Elias is continuing to meet with attorneys following the hearing.
