(AP) ? The Obama election campaign has a politically loaded question it wants voters to think about: What is Mitt Romney hiding?

Not a thing, Romney says. The Democrats are just trying to change the subject from the weak economy.

It's a newly intense back-and-forth as President Barack Obama's campaign team tries to cast his Republican opponent as a secretive rich guy who keeps his money in offshore accounts and refuses to release more of his tax returns.

The coordinated push, which includes stinging criticism from Obama and Vice President Joe Biden, web videos and television advertisements, comes as the Democrats grasp for ways to gain an advantage in a closely contested election and overcome a steady stream of lackluster economic news.

Getting personal, Biden declared Tuesday that Romney was "making a lie of the old adage, like father, like son" by not meeting the standards his father, George Romney, set when he released 12 years of tax returns during his 1968 presidential bid.

In a speech to Hispanic leaders in Las Vegas, Biden said of Romney: "He wants you to show your papers, but he won't show us his." It was a criticism that hit both Romney's financial reticence and his support for an Arizona immigration law that allows police to check the immigration status of people they stop.

The Obama campaign also posted a video on YouTube Tuesday that asked: "How long can Romney keep information on his investments in overseas tax havens secret? And why did he do it in the first place?"

Romney aides have called the barrage of attacks an "unfounded character assault" by a campaign desperate to distract attention from a sluggish economy that threatens the president's re-election prospects. And Romney insists his private financial records contain nothing illegal.

"I have followed the law," Romney said Tuesday on Fox News. "I have paid my taxes as due. I have also disclosed through all of the requirements of the government, every asset which I own, fairly and honestly, recognizing, of course, not to do so would be not only wrong but illegal and criminal."

Still, Romney has released only a single year's federal return ? for 2010 ? along with an estimate for 2011. Other returns could contain information about accounts he has held in Switzerland, the Cayman Islands and Bermuda, and that has created an opening for Democrats to accuse him of being secretive and taking advantage of tax loopholes that aren't available to average Americans.

"I think what's important if you're running for president is that the American people know who you are, what you've done and that you're an open book," Obama said Monday in a television interview.

The Obama campaign says its focus on Romney's private finances isn't about his wealth but about whether he is gaming the system and, if so, what it says about what he would do as president to address tax loopholes.

With less than four months until Election Day, Obama aides say they may run new television ads targeting Romney's close hold on his financial records. The campaign spent more than $2 million in May on an ad titled "Swiss Bank Account" that ran in politically important Iowa, Ohio and Virginia.

Democrats say the sustained criticism of Romney's financial secrecy is solidifying for voters the notion that the Republican challenger is out of touch with middle class economics. A Washington Post-ABC News poll out Tuesday showed Obama with an 11 point advantage over Romney as the one who "better understands the economic problems people in this country are having." Among registered voters, 51 percent said Obama better understands versus 40 percent who said Romney does.

But longtime Republican operative Charlie Black said the Obama team's focus on Romney's personal finances was a Washington-driven issue that was unlikely to resonate with voters who would rather hear the candidates talk about their plans for job creation and economic growth.

"What people want to know is, did Romney file all of the legally required disclosures, which he did," said Black, an informal adviser to Romney's campaign. "They already know he's a rich guy."

While federal laws require Romney to release a broad portrait of his personal finances, candidates are not required to release their personal tax returns, despite the longstanding precedent for doing so, first set by Romney's father.

Obama released seven years' worth of returns during his 2008 campaign.

Romney, who could be worth up to $250 million, would be among the nation's richest U.S. presidents if elected. He made his fortune at Bain Capital, a Boston-based private equity firm that has become a key part of the argument for his White House bid. He hasn't drawn a regular paycheck in more than a decade, however, and has instead lived off a series of investments.

Romney faced pressure to release details of his finances during the GOP primary from Republican opponents who warned that the issue could follow him into the general election.

"If there's nothing in there, why not release them, and if there is something in them, better to know now," former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said in January.

Romney did relent under party pressure and release his 2010 returns. That forced him to amend the personal financial disclosures he had filed earlier in the year because those documents didn't mention a Swiss bank account or a series of funds that were set up in foreign countries. Romney has yet to release his 2011 tax returns; he filed for a time extension. His advisers say he'll release them before the Nov. 6 election.

Romney's financial filings include at least six Cayman-based funds, worth between $7 million and $32 million, run by Bain. More than a dozen other funds based in the Caymans and Bermuda showed up on his 2010 federal tax returns. His campaign says he pays the same taxes he would if they were based in the United States.

Romney closed his UBS bank account in Switzerland in 2010 as he prepared to run for president.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) ? Jake Odorizzi and Wil Myers dressed side-by-side Sunday afternoon in the corner of the Kansas City clubhouse, one they hope to inhabit soon on a more permanent basis.

The two prospects started for the U.S. team in the All-Star Futures Game, along with fellow prospect Yordano Ventura, the starting pitcher for the World team. Together, they gave hometown fans a reason to cheer during an All-Star weekend largely devoid of Royals representation.

"This is my second Futures Game, but this one is a little bit better, being in Kansas City," said Myers, a 21-year-old outfielder who's been tearing up the minors. "It's just a cool thought, to be here in front of the home crowd, to get a little taste of it now."

He hopes to get a bigger taste of it soon.

Odorizzi and Myers are both on the cusp of their shot at the big leagues, the latest in a wave of talent that has been matriculating through one of baseball's best farm systems. The Royals have said they want them up this season, but nobody has been willing to divulge a timetable.

Odorizzi is 5-0 with a 2.83 ERA since a promotion from Double-A Northwest Arkansas to Triple-A Omaha. Myers is hitting .315 with 14 homers in only 48 games at Omaha.

"When they're down there in our league, in Triple-A, and you see them day-in and day-out going out and just crushing everyone, it's time to move on," Omaha manager Mike Jirschele said.

"There's nothing left to learn at that level."

The Royals have forced fans into a wait-till-next-year attitude for decades, and that's been the case again this year. Despite promising young players such as Eric Hosmer and Mike Moustakas, the team once again languishes near the bottom of the AL Central.

They also gave fans few opportunities to cheer on the home team during All-Star weekend.

Billy Butler will DH Tuesday night, but there are no representatives in Monday night's Home Run Derby, and closer Jonathan Broxton missed out in the last-chance All-Star voting.

That leaves fans ready for the here-and-now to once again root on the future.

"I'd be lying if I said I didn't think about it every day, about coming up," Myers said, "but whatever the Royals want me to do is what I'll do."

Royals Hall of Famer George Brett understands that the once-proud franchise has fallen on hard times, and that there have been few reasons to fill Kauffman Stadium over the years.

As the manager of the U.S. team, Brett did his best to change that.

That's why Odorizzi started the game ? giving up a solo homer to Jurickson Profor in his one inning of work ? and why Myers played all nine innings, going 2 for 4 and driving in three runs to help pace the U.S. team to a 17-5 victory over the World team.

"Since I'm the manager and the game is in Kansas City ? Wil is Kansas City Royals property ? he's going to get a chance to show off a little bit," Brett said with a smile.

ALL-STAR SUBSTITUTION: White Sox right-hander Jake Peavy replaced Angels left-hander C.J. Wilson on the American League roster for the All-Star game.

Wilson has been dealing with a blister on the middle finger of his left hand, and physicians recommended the two-time All-Star allow it to heal during the All-Star break.

He was already a fill-in for the Yankees' CC Sabathia.

Peavy is 7-5 with a 2.85 ERA and has four complete games in 17 starts. The former Cy Young Award winner was a two-time All-Star with San Diego. He was traded to Chicago in July 2009, and will be making his first appearance for the AL All-Star team.

___

WEB GEMS: Dylan Bundy doesn't get rattled very easily. That's one of the many reasons why the Baltimore Orioles drafted the right-hander fourth overall last season.

Still, he was thrown for a loop during his first season as a professional ? at Delmarva in the South Atlantic League and Frederick in the Carolina League ? when fans began to pounce on him for autographs, and he realized just how many people are following his every move.

"It's a little strange," Bundy said, "to Google your name and see your face everywhere."

The 19-year-old Bundy drew quite a bit of attention when he began his pro career with 13 hitless innings. And with the emergence of new technology, any Orioles fan anywhere in the world could get online and keep tabs on one of the organization's top prospects.

"With all the social media and the Internet, people are aware of what these guys are doing," said Royals Hall of Famer George Brett, who managed the U.S. team in the Futures Game.

"Nobody was aware of what George Brett was doing in Billings, Montana, in 1971. Nobody cared what I did when I was playing for the San Antonio Bees in 1972," he said. "Now, you can get on the computer and find everybody's stats. People are more into it."

___

PLAY (SOFT)BALL! Dave Winfield hit a pair of homers, Jon Hamm of the AMC hit "Mad Men" added a two-run shot and a team representing National League clubs routed their AL counterparts 21-8 in the All-Star Legends & Celebrity Softball Game.

Matt Kinsey of the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team added a three-run shot, and Hall of Famer Andre Dawson and soccer star Carlos Bocanegra also homered for the National team.

Former Royals star Mike Sweeney hit a pair of homers for the American team before an adoring sellout crowd at Kauffman Stadium that remained long after the All-Star Futures Game.

Joe Carter added a three-run homer off longtime Olympic softball star Jennie Finch, while Kansas basketball coach Bill Self and actor Chord Overstreet of "Glee" fame also went deep.

Sprint's Galaxy S III update removes local search abilities

Galaxy S III

Yesterday we heard that the Sprint Galaxy S III was in the midst of getting a small "security" update over-the-air, but with little detail of what exactly was changed. The jury is still out about any security fixes, but one thing that was changed is that you can no longer use the Google search bar to search for local content on the device. This comes on the heels of yet another legal battle between Apple and Samsung, where the unified search ability was enough to get the Galaxy Nexus on a do-not-sell list for about a week.

Luckily, it's pretty easy to fix by using the Google search bar app from a previous version. If you've received the update and miss your universal search, hit the link below for the AC forums thread for details on getting it back.

Samsung, Sprint, we get it. You were forced to make these changes. But calling it a security update and not filling in your users about the full scope of what was being changed on their phones is dirty pool. We expect, and deserve, a little better.

How to pay off college debt

by Dr Pandula Siribaddana

Created on: July 06, 2012 ??Last Updated: July 09, 2012

While obtaining a college degree can make a person earn much more than their non-degree-holding counterparts, completing college education without debt has become nearly impossible. In fact, the total student debt in the US has skyrocketed passing $1 trillion while the number of students obtaining loans to attend public schools have risen from 46 percent in 1992 to 62 percent in 2008.

With economic downturn affecting the earnings of most households, it is possible for students to fall victim to the rising college debt unless appropriate debt management strategies are planned and adapted well in advance. Therefore, this article will discuss some of the strategies to pay off college debt along with some innovative strategies which may come in handy in certain instances.

-Find a part time job

Finding a part-time job while studying may be a good way to save the loan money and find alternative ways of paying extra costs that are incurred during the study period. If lucky, these students would be able to earn some extra cash; and if saved, it cushions the first few months of the loan repayment, or sometimes relieve the student from his or her entire college debt.

-Budget the expenses during college education

Listing out the expenses including the potential expenses in the future would enable a student to avoid most of the unnecessary expenses and to save on some of the other expenses. It also helps students to plan alternative ways of meeting up with the requirements without having to rely on the loan money. The savings made through budgeting should be kept in a savings account and should only be used when repaying the loan.

-Opt for bi-weekly payments rather than monthly payments

Given the relatively low interest that has to be paid when considering the total loan amount, it is advisable to undertake bi-weekly loan repayment than a monthly installment. In general, such payment plans could lessen the amount of loan that has to be paid by few months at the end of the loan period.

-Apply for student loan tax deduction

By applying for a tax deduction, which amounts to a percentage of the interest paid for the student loan, sometimes it is possible to wipe off at least a year from the student loan repayment schedule. Often, students are eligible to receive a 25 percent tax refund on the interest paid at the end of the year and in case of a $2,500 interest, the minimum amount of savings would be around $600 for the same year.

-Pay the high-interest debt first

In case of credit card debt and student loan debt existing together, a student should opt to pay off the debt with high interest, such as the credit cards, prior to completing the repayment of the student loan.

-Pay extra when possible

Paying an extra amount to reduce the principle could save hundreds if not thousands of dollars over the years on a student?s loan. The reason being that the calculation of interest for even a small amount would be done for the entire loan period and when added-up, this could become a considerable amount of money. Thus, paying even extra five or ten dollars can make a difference in the final count.

Apart from the above methods of easing college debt early, registering for loan auto-pay schemes is also an option. These often carry a significantly lower interest rate. At the same time, public service also forgives a certain percentage of the college debt after few years of service or registering for a free degree. This makes the student debt free at the end of the study period, and is included among some other alternatives to minimize or prevent accumulation of college debt.

Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III launch date pushed back two days to July 12

Verizon customers looking to walk into a store and get a Galaxy S III on Tuesday will be sorely disappointed. According to MobileBurn, Verizon has pushed the retail launch date back by two days to July 12th. The company updated its website with this new launch date and provided the following statement:

?As it sometimes happens, the availability date for a device changes. The Galaxy S III on Verizon Wireless will now be available in stores and online starting July 12. Pre-orders have started to ship and are still available for preorder.?

Because of this delay, pre-order customers will be the first to get their hands on a shiny, new S III handset. If you are one of the fortunate ones to get your phone before the retail stores, let us know in the comments what you think. Seattle Council votes support for 'Care' campaign ? Puget Sound ...

By Susie Levy

Seattle made history June 25, becoming the first U.S. city to formally endorse the national Caring Across Generations campaign.? More than a hundred supporters packed the City Council chambers to witness the unanimous vote.

Seattle caregiving advocates had launched their supporting campaign in February at a Care Congress at the Greenwood Community Senior Center.

Led by Casa Latina, Washington CAN, Service Employees Local 775 and PSARA, the Seattle Care Council brought the resolution to the offices of every City Council member.? To support the campaign, they collected over 3,000 postcards.

Council members Nick Licata and John O?Brien spent a day with SEIU caregivers and their clients to experience first hand the importance and the challenges of caregiving.

When the resolution was heard in committee June 13, Robby Stern of PSARA, Kassandra Gonzalez of Casa Latina, Jeannette Wenzl of Washington CAN and Sylvia Liang of SEIU 775 joined committee members at the table.? Moved by the personal stories told by the coalition leaders, Council members shared their own experiences with caregiving.

The resolution notes that as baby boomers age, the need for affordable and accessible home and community-based care will continue to grow.? At the same time, many of those providing care will lack the supports they need.? The resolution proposes to transform the care industry by:

  • Creating two million new, good quality jobs in home care.
  • Developing training and career advancement models and a path to legal status for care workers.
  • Making home and community-based services accessible and affordable to all who need them, so that our elders and family members with disabilities can stay in their homes and continue to be a part of our communities.? Adding a long-term care benefit to Medicare would be an important way to achieve this goal.

The resolution directs the Seattle Office of Intergovernmental Relations (OIR) to promote the campaign with local, regional, state and federal governments, including the National League of Cities.? The coalition now has the formal support of Seattle and its lobbyists as the campaign is carried to Olympia and Washington, D.C.

?The active support of our PSARA members helped make his historic achievement possible.? President Robby Stern said. ?From signing and circulating postcards to helping pack city hall, our voices have helped move this campaign forward.?

Advertising & Marketing Ideas for Public Bulletin ? ? Small business ...

You can find public bulletin boards throughout communities, in locations such as libraries, grocery stores, laundromats, schools and health clubs. Their ubiquitous presence can make bulletin boards an effective low-cost marketing tool for a business owner with a limited advertising budget. A few basic ideas can help you get the most out of your public bulletin board marketing campaign.

Bulletin board advertising can make the community aware of your new enterprise. Creating fliers with tear strips at the bottom has a similar effect to handing out business cards. Use the body of the flier to provide basic information about your business, and include your business contact information on the tear strip. This prevents the need for prospective customers to write down the information. Even if a prospect forgets about your business in the short term, your tear strip can serve as a reminder when she comes across it at a later time.

You can enjoy better success with your bulletin board marketing campaign by targeting the locations where you place your fliers instead of placing them randomly. By doing so, you?re more likely to reach people that have a need for your service. For example, if you own a dry cleaning business, focus on posting your fliers on bulletin boards in laundromats or in businesses frequented by professionals who need to dress formally for work. If you operate a resume preparation service, ideal locations include local colleges and libraries.

Use public bulletin boards to promote your business? special events or sales on an ongoing basis. The body of the flier can provide information about the promotion, and tear strips can serve as coupons or may be exchanged for free merchandise. By keeping track of the number of tear strips you receive, you?ll be able to gauge the effectiveness of your promotion as well as your bulletin board marketing efforts in general.

You even can start a public bulletin board service business of your own. Many business owners and professionals do not have the time to travel around the area to post their own marketing materials. You can provide a valuable service by performing the task for them and receiving a flat fee in return. If you?re the creative type, generate additional revenue by working with business owners to develop an eye-catching flier that conveys their marketing message. Of course, you can use public bulletin boards to market your services.
