India Ink: India's Dal: Increasingly, Not From India

For many Indians a meal is not complete without as serving of dal, or lentils. In north India, it may be a hearty black dal that could be a meal in itself. In south India, it is likely to be a fiery sambhar, while in Gujarat, it?s often sweet.

But increasingly the dal many Indians eat is, strictly speaking, not Indian. It is imported from countries like Tanzania, Kenya and Canada. In the 2010-11 fiscal year, the country imported almost 2.6 million tons of pulses, a broad category that includes lentils and beans, up from just 1.7 million tons in 2005-06, according to government data.

As I wrote in a article in this morning?s paper, India has had a bumper harvest of wheat this year, so much so that granaries are bursting at the seams and policy makers are scrambling to find space for all the grain the government has bought from farmers. So, why hasn?t India been able to similarly boost the production of pulses, a commodity for which there is obviously great demand, going by the import numbers and by what?s on dinner plates?

I put this question to Ashok Gulati, who is the chairman of the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices in New Delhi, a government agency that advises policy makers. He said there is a simple explanation: The government buys millions of tons of wheat and rice every year, but it does not buy pulses.

The wheat and rice help meet the needs of its food subsidy programs, provide a buffer stock in case of a drought and guarantee farmers a ?minimum support price,? which often is higher than the market price for grain. But legumes are not part of the subsidy regime and do not earn the same favor from policy makers.

As a result, many farmers don?t grow those crops. Their prices yo-yo up and down from year to year depending on global supply and demand, making them a more risky investment. They require more attention than wheat or rice and can be decimated more easily by bad weather or pests.

Pulses are not the only such crop. India imports a large portion of its cooking oil from countries like Indonesia and Malaysia because it doesn?t grow enough oilseeds, another commodity not subsidized directly by the government.

?We are importing about 40 to 50 percent of the edible oil used in the country, so there is a huge deficit,? Mr. Gulati told me over the telephone recently. ?We really need much more emphasis on edible oilseeds as well as pulses. And the policy is unfortunately more skewed toward wheat and rice because of the commitments we have made to distribute wheat and rice.?

Mr. Gulati is among a group of reformers who have argued that India needs to fundamentally rethink its food subsidies. Instead of tilting the proverbial field toward two crops ? wheat and rice ? the government, these people argue, needs to be more strategic and target more crops. After all, people need more than the carbohydrates they get from wheat and rice to survive and thrive.

Many in Mr. Gulati?s camp have argued forcefully that India should move away from giving cheap wheat and rice to providing food stamps that could be used to buy a larger range of food items like pulses, vegetables, fruits and dairy products. But that is a minority view among policy makers and advocates for the poor, who insist that the government must provide more people with more rice, wheat and other grains at lower prices. A new food security bill that will come to a vote in Parliament later this year is expected to do just that.

It is not that the government is not concerned about pulses and oilseeds. It has undertaken several efforts to develop hybrid seeds to improve the yields of pulses and oilseeds and to get more farmers to grow them. But those initiatives have so far only shown modest progress. The production of oilseeds and pulses has risen 22 percent in the last five years, but demand appears to be growing even faster as demonstrated by a 55 percent increase in the imports of pulses and edible oils in the same time.

Another indication that supply is not meeting demand is the fact that the price of foods that provide more protein and fat is going up a lot faster in India than other kinds of food, as many Indians become wealthier and are able to afford to richer foods. Subir Gokarn, a deputy governor at the Reserve Bank of India, has pointed out that most of the food inflation in India in recent years has come from the increase in the price of vegetables, fruits, oil, dairy products, pulses and meat.

The increase in prices offers some hope that farmers will find these foods more lucrative and start devoting more attention to them. Until they do, however, expect more of your dal and oil to come from East Africa, Southeast Asia and other distant shores.

Some Of The Good And Bad Points Of Very Low Calorie Diets | Free ...

Very low calorie diets are just one possibility out of many different types of diets. Because these diets cut your calorie intake to levels that are very low it?s recommended that you consult a medical professional for advice. Patients needing to lose a lot of weight quickly are sometimes recommended these diets by their doctors, however not everybody can do them safely. The features of very low calorie diets are what we shall be focusing on in the following article.

One thing you should know about very low calorie diets is that they can have side effects. When reducing your calorie intake, you may experience some effects that are less than pleasant. The list of possible harmful effects may be comprised of symptoms like fatigue, diarrhea, nausea and others. There are some severely heavy folks who go on extreme diets and have suffered from gallstones; which could have been a result of the speed to which the weight was lost, rather that the diet regimen. Your doctor should always be included in making decisions on severe weight reduction diets, especially with an extreme diet plan.

Most very low calories diets involve prepared formulas to make sure you stay within the allotted number of calories, but there are also natural diets that severely restrict calories. One potential option is a raw foods diet, where the foods that you consume are unprocessed and uncooked. As you won?t be eating any foods that are processed, all of the modern high calorie junk will be avoided, so a strict raw foods diet will normally be very low in calories.

You can make your own raw food versions of foods, like bread by using a dehydrator, however a raw food diet will normally consist of fruits, sprouts, nuts and vegetables. Most people will consider this diet to be very healthy, however it?s not so easy to stick to because you have to avoid nearly all modern day processed foods. Even if you don?t want to make your diet 100% raw, you may want to incorporate more raw foods into your very low calorie diet.

A very low calorie diet, called the Cambridge Diet, was produced in England back in the 1970s. Due to you receiving foods that are pre-packaged on this diet, your calorie intake will be low in addition to having all of the essential nutrition you need calculated for you. These can be in the form of meal bars, shakes and soups. While this diet has been around for a long time, and many people have had success with it, it does have some disadvantages. You must drink plenty of water to avoid being dehydrated, and you can only do exercise at a very low intensity. Also, people can find themselves fed up of consuming packaged meals. You should ask your doctor if the Cambridge Diet is safe for you before you go on it. There are certainly benefits to very low calorie diets, especially for people who suffer from medical problems due to them being extremely overweight. It is best, however, to get supervision from your doctor before going on a diet like this as there are risks, like side effects, malnutrition and dehydration.

Donations to GOP congressional hopeful ?Joe the Plumber? pour in from beyond Ohio

Republican candidate Samuel ?Joe the Plumber? Wurzelbacher may be facing an uphill battle in his quest to be a member of Congress, but donations to his upstart campaign show how popular he is among conservatives outside?his native Ohio.

In the first quarter of 2012, Wurzelbacher?s campaign received donations from 26 states, according to Federal Election Commission data. Less than 7 percent of those contributions came from Ohioans.

The man made famous by his confrontation in 2008 with then-presidential candidate Barack Obama about progressive tax policy is running against incumbent Marcy Kaptur in the newly drawn 9th Congressional District. Kaptur beat Dennis Kucinich, a victim of redistricting, in the Democratic?primary.

Kaptur has received donations from 18 states. Most of her individual donors, though, are inside Ohio.?She has also raised far more from political action committees (PACs) than Wurzelbacher has.

?An incumbent will always raise a lot more money [than a challenger] and ? a lot more money will usually allow them to win,? Georgetown University government professor Michele L. Swers told The Daily Caller.

Whether anti-establishment and tea party candidates wield the same power this year as they did in 2010 is unclear.

Wurzelbacher said he doesn?t consider himself a tea party poster child, and that he isn?t beholden to either Republicans or Democrats.

?I?m an American and I don?t serve either one of those parties. I serve America,? Wurzelbacher told TheDC. If elected, he said he could ?represent a lot of people?s voices that aren?t really represented in Congress.?

Republicans in this year?s House races are eager to keep their issues on voters?s minds. ?He?s clearly an ideological candidate,? Swers said, ?so he?s getting ideological money.?

Wurzelbacher, however, received only a modicum of PAC money in the first quarter ? a little more than $7,000, according to Federal Election Commission filings. PACs contributed the majority of the Kaptur campaign?s money to date, donating approximately $360,000 by the end of March.

When accounting for all individual donations during the campaign, however, Wurzelbacher is not far behind. He has raised approximately $235,000 through March 31; she, $275,000, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

Even if Wurzelbacher doesn?t win ? most political observers predict he won?t ? ?running for Congress opens doors,? Wurzelbacher said, ?and maybe I can help bring more awareness for the issues weighing on American minds.?

People like Wurzelbacher often take on near-impossible races like this one for the public exposure, Swers explained. ?If he keeps himself in the political fray, he has more clout.?

?Wurzelbacher?s campaign definitely has a purpose but it?s not to win a seat in Congress,? Caine Cortellino, a former Democratic campaign manager and political consultant, told TheDC.

The Ohio district where Wurzelbacher is running has, by design, a significant Democratic demographic that will make the chance of winning nearly zero, Cortellino said.

?His use by people like Herman Cain could continue to mobilize an extreme fringe of the Republican Party ? tea partiers ? across the country,? Cortellino said.

Cain, the Godfather?s Pizza mogul and a former GOP presidential candidate,?donated $2,550 to Wurzelbacher?s campaign in January.

But it?s grassroots support that Wurzelbacher said he?s counting on.

?I believe talking to people and hearing what they have to say is just as important, if not more important? than traditional forms of advertising, said Wurzelbacher, whose campaign relies heavily on putting feet on the street. He and his supporters, including his wife and son, for example, take ?Wurzel Walks? Saturday mornings, knocking on doors in the district.

It?s not all low-tech, though. Wurzelbacher?s campaign has embraced social media, posting YouTube videos and daily blogs on Facebook, and now has a Twitter following that numbers about 7,000. He gained 1,100 new followers last week alone.

Kaptur has approximately 500 followers on the micro-blogging site.

Swers, the Georgetown professor, added that Kaptur?s strong Democratic credentials will play well in the liberal Ohio district. Kaptur is also the longest-serving woman in the House, enjoys strong labor backing and will become the ranking member on the House Appropriations Committee ? unless Republicans were to lose control of Congress. In that case, she would be the committee?s chairwoman.

The plainspoken?Wurzelbacher said that?effecting change in Congress would ultimately be like ?turning the Titanic on a dime.? But neither political realities nor political fundraising seems to deter him.

?I think all of us at one point think, ?I could do a better job than that fool?,? said Wurzelbacher, referring to elected officials. ?Then the reality of it sets in and you think, ?How can I raise that kind of money???

Bee-killing virus gets supercharged by mites

LONDON | Thu Jun 7, 2012 2:07pm EDT

LONDON

(Reuters) - Parasitic mites have turbo-charged the spread of a virus responsible for a rise in honey bee deaths around the world, scientists said on Thursday.

Bee populations have been falling rapidly in many countries, fuelled by a phenomenon known as colony collapse disorder. Its cause is unclear but the Varroa mite is a prime suspect, since it spreads viruses while feeding on hemolymph, or bee's "blood".

To clarify the link between mites and viruses, a team led by Stephen Martin of Britain's University of Sheffield studied the impact of Varroa in Hawaii, which the mites have only recently invaded.

They found the arrival of Varroa increased the prevalence of a single type of virus, deformed wing virus (DWV), in honey bees from around 10 percent to 100 percent.

At the same time the amount of DWV virus in the bees' bodies rocketed by a millionfold and there was a huge reduction in virus diversity, with a single strain of DWV crowding out others.

"It is that strain that is now dominant around the world and seems to be killing bees," Martin said in a telephone interview. "My money would be on this virus as being key."

Other factors - including fungi, pesticides and decreased plant diversity - are thought to play a role in colony collapse, but Ian Jones of the University of Reading said the latest findings pointed to the virus and mite combination as being the main culprit.

"This data provides clear evidence that, of all the suggested mechanisms of honey bee loss, virus infection brought in by mite infestation is a major player in the decline," he said.

Jones, who was not involved the research, said the findings published in the journal Science reinforced the need for beekeepers to control Varroa infestation in colonies.

The threat to bee populations extends across much of Europe and the United States to Asia, South America and the Middle East, experts say.

Bees are important pollinators of flowering plants, including many fruit and vegetable crops. A 2011 United Nations report estimated that bees and other pollinators such as butterflies, beetles or birds do work worth 153 billion euros ($191 billion) a year for the human economy.

Vatican scandal: More than just the 'butler did it'

Giuseppe Cacace / AFP - Getty Images

Pope Benedict XVI waves as he leaves after a celebration at Milan's Duomo as part of the 7th World Meeting of Families on Saturday.

By Claudio Lavanga, NBC News Producer

ROME ? The birds offered the first hint of danger in the tiny Vatican State. On Jan. 30, Pope Benedict XVI released the traditional two doves as ?a sign of peace to the city of Rome and to the world? from his papal apartments. But instead of flying away, one hesitated for a long spell before flying off, and the other made a quick U-turn and flew right back into the room.

Could it be that they were scared of the crows hovering overhead??

A crow, ?corvo? in Italian, is a pejorative term for informants. And these days, there is no more famous informant than Paolo Gabriele, the pope?s butler who has recently been exposed as the source of confidential memos leaked to the Italian media since the beginning of the year. ) He was arrested last week, and he must have thanked God the days of the Inquisition are long gone; instead of being burned at the stake, he is being detained and questioned in a comfortable ?security room? within the Vatican walls. ?

The first question that investigators will probably be asking is if the butler was acting alone? Even the history of Christianity suggests that Judas didn?t act alone. So is there a Pontius Pilate or a Herod in this story??

On Sunday, days after his arrest, more memos were leaked to the Italian daily La Repubblica, giving credit to the suspicion that Gabriele was just a pawn in a game of thrones in the Holy See, the ?postman? at the service of much bigger players trying to shake up the very core of the Vatican?s center of power.?

New Vatican documents leaked; source calls pope's butler a 'scapegoat

But whoever the ?judases? are, they didn?t betray the pope for monetary gain, but according to their own (anonymous) admission, they did it to ?clean up house? and expose the abuse of power that is consumed on a daily basis within the Vatican walls by the closest aides of the pope.?

The main target of the memos is thought to be Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Vatican?s Secretary of State. He is accused by many in the Vatican bureaucracy known as the Curia of wielding too much power. Many of the leaked memos were directly or indirectly linked to him, and reveal an almost dictatorial role within the Vatican that goes beyond his role as the Vatican?s ?prime minister.???

Pool / Reuters

Pope Benedict XVI, the Vatican State Secretary Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, center, and the bishop of Milan Angelo Scola, right, attend a concert at Scala's Theatre in Milan June 1, 2012.

On Monday evening, Bertone spoke out for the first time against the scandal that has been nicknamed ?Vatileaks? during an interview with TG1, one of Italy?s biggest newscasts, and he didn?t mince his words. He called the leaks a "ferocious, biting and organized attack on the pope.? Bertone said however that the pope "is not letting himself be scared by these attacks, whatever their nature."

Benedict has stood by him so far, and even sent out a strong message of unity by parading him along on his trip to the northern Italian city of Milan over the past weekend. ??

But while Benedict and Cardinal Bertone try their best to prove that they are still in control despite the embarrassing scandal, the crows, it seems, are still flying overhead.?

New AMA chief: No chaos with court's health ruling

CHICAGO (AP) ? The incoming president of the American Medical Association says not to expect chaos if the U.S. Supreme Court rejects all or part of the sweeping federal health care law.

Dr. Jeremy Lazarus takes over as AMA president later this month. He says he's not making any predictions on a high court decision, which also is expected this month.

Lazarus wants the court to uphold President Barack Obama's health overhaul. But if it doesn't, Lazarus told The Associated Press on Wednesday that he doesn't envision doctors throwing up their hands or patients not getting medical care.

Still, he says trying to get more people insured and how that influences costs will be big challenges. But Lazarus thinks it can be worked out without great upheaval.

Are wider faced men more self-sacrificing?

ScienceDaily (June 4, 2012) ? Picture a stereotypical tough guy and you might imagine a man with a broad face, a square jaw, and a stoical demeanor. Existing research even supports this association, linking wider, more masculine faces with several less-than-cuddly characteristics, including perceived lack of warmth, dishonesty, and lack of cooperation. But a new study suggests that men with these wide, masculine faces aren't always the aggressive tough guys they appear to be.

"Men with wider faces have typically been portrayed as 'bad to the bone,'" says psychologist Michael Stirrat. But he and David Perrett wondered whether the relationship between facial width and personality was really so simple. They suspected that men who look aggressive and untrustworthy might actually be good guys in some contexts.

In their new study, published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, they predicted that more physically robust men, as identified by a wider face, would be self-sacrificing when their group was competing with another group.

The researchers gave University of St Andrews students money to play a game in groups where they could either benefit themselves and free-ride on the cooperation of others or they could risk their money to benefit their group. Half of the students were told that the outcomes of the game would be compared between St Andrews students, the other half that they would be compared with a rival university. The prediction was that the wider faced men would respond to the rivalry in the second condition and sacrifice their money for their own group.

The results of the study confirmed their hypotheses and turned the typical associations with facial width on their head: the more robust looking, wider faced men in the study were more self-sacrificing than other men.

"It was surprising that our predictions were confirmed," reports Dr. Stirrat. "When we mentioned Edinburgh University, our St Andrews participants with wider faces were more cooperative than the other men. When we didn't mention the rivalry, they were less cooperative than other men."

The present finding provides a more nuanced understanding of masculinity and male behaviour. Compared with women, men appear to be more sensitive to intergroup relationships and to whether they are being observed. The results of this experiment suggest that while more robust males may show more 'masculine' behaviour in anti-social ways such as physical aggression they are also more likely to make sacrifices to support the groups to which they belong. In short, the same characteristics in men predict both anti-social and pro-social behaviour, depending on the context.

These findings are particularly interesting in light of recent research that has shown that the facial width of male CEOs predicts their business performance and facial width of male presidential candidates predicts their drive for achievement. This new study suggests that facial width may be related to performance and achievement because these men may be more self-sacrificing in time and effort for their group.
