Here?s A Video Of Samsung?s Galaxy S III In The Wild

Screen shot 2012-05-16 at 11.39.56 AMThe Galaxy S III is likely the most anticipated Android phone in existence. At least, today it is. Samsung is the king of Android hardware, the Galaxy S II is its most successful phone to date, and a third iteration is only expected to follow in its predecessor's footsteps. Plus, we weren't even comforted by the usual pre-announcement leakapalooza — Samsung reportedly kept early units locked in test boxes, which only made that glorious moment of unveiling all the more wonderful. But we're still waiting and wondering about a potential U.S. release date for what is sure to be Samsung's most popular phone yet, meaning that getting a peek of the device in the wild is near to impossible until "later this summer". But as is the case with almost any phone, someone has gotten their hands on a unit of the S III and set up the good ol' handy cam for our viewing pleasure.

US veterans to return war medals in protest

Narayan Mahon for msnbc.com

Iraq War veteran Steven Acheson at his home in Platteville, Wis., on May 14, 2012.

By Miranda Leitsinger, msnbc.com

Iraq war veteran Steven Acheson will engage in the rarest of protests this weekend: He will hand back his military service medals at the NATO summit in Chicago, an?act one veteran calls "disgraceful."

Acheson, who served for five years in the Army, including more than a year in Iraq that he says?left him with PTSD and nightmares, is taking this step to protest the "war on terror"?and the force leading it, NATO. He will be joined by a few dozen veterans from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars who are concerned about the wars' fallout on veterans and civilians alike.

?I feel like this is a really good way for me to kind of, not clear my conscience, but just make a step in the direction of healing and kind of reconciling with the Afghan people and the Iraq people,? said Acheson, a 27-year-old college student from Wisconsin and a member of Iraq Veterans Against the War, which includes soldiers who served in any of the post- 9/11 conflict zones, ?? and let them know that we?re standing by their side and we?re not standing with NATO anymore. We don?t agree with the policies that are driving these wars.?

Acheson and 30-50 fellow 9/11-era veterans will carry their medals as they lead an anti-war march this Sunday through Chicago?s downtown area to the convention center where NATO is holding its summit. President Obama and other world leaders are scheduled to be among the summit attendees, and the city of Chicago is bracing for major protests.

Organizers are hoping the rally, which caps a week-long series of anti-NATO actions, will draw thousands. The Iraq and Afghanistan veterans will be flanked by Vietnam veterans and will hold a reconciliation ceremony with Afghans for Peace.

They intend to carry an American flag that they will lower and replace with a white one as they approach the summit venue. They are planning to pin their medals to the American flag, which they?d like to present to NATO officials. If they?re unable to do so, they may construct an ad hoc memorial or toss the medals toward the convention center -- like some 900 Vietnam veterans did in 1971 on Capitol Hill in an anti-war protest dubbed ?Operation Dewey Canyon III.?

Barry Romo was West Coast coordinator for the Vietnam Veterans Against the War during the 1971 week-long demonstration.

?Wives left husbands; parents said ? those medals were something you should be giving the grandkids. But I mean, the level of death was just really too much for us to deal with at that time and we said, you know, if there?s a question of medals versus lives then there was no question,? he said.

Returning the medals ? even those that are given just for showing up to the theater of conflict, as are some of the ones the veterans plan to return ? is not without controversy.

?They?re as much of a disgrace as the veterans back in the Vietnam days that did the same thing,? said retired Army 1st Sgt. Troy Steward, of New York, who served 22 years and is now a military blogger. ?If these veterans aren?t proud of the service that they did ? then they should never have accepted them (medals) in the first place.?

Steward, 43, who served in Afghanistan, said the action was ?disgraceful and disrespectful? to others who had served. While the veterans were welcome to express their opinions, he said, there were a lot of ?better ways to do it than essentially shaming your military service and your brethren.?

Acheson will return his ?Global War on Terrorism Service Medal? and the ?Iraq Campaign Medal?; he is keeping others he received.

Aaron Hughes, a 30-year-old organizer for IVAW who served six years in the Army, including 15 months in Iraq and Kuwait, also will return two medals.

In the process of searching for a way to heal ?we came to these symbols of the occupations, which are these medals that we carry around and we still have,? Hughes said. ?They?re these ? reminders of what we?ve done, that it?s time to let go of.?

?I think it?s something that many of us are conflicted about, but we also feel like this is the right action to take,? he noted, adding that there was a lot of consensus on the returning of the medals. ?It is a sacrifice, but it?s one that we feel is worth it.?

But some?cautioned the veterans to think carefully before handing over the medals.

?They become almost like family heirlooms in some ways,? said Adrian Lewis, a professor specializing in 20th century warfare at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. ?It's not the norm to give them back. Most folks are proud of them. They feel like they earned them and they?re indications that they served their country.?

?They may regret it at some point ... and their family may ultimately regret it, too,? he added.

Unlike the Vietnam War, Americans today don?t have the same outrage over the current conflicts, Lewis said.

?Most Americans are not paying attention to the war ... they have no stake in it, no commitment to it,? he added, noting that he therefore didn?t expect the veterans? medal protest to ?be a big deal. It's not a game-changer.?

It?s not clear how many other veterans have taken similar action. The Department of Defense, the Air Force and Army said they did not keep records on how many medals have been given back.

"We're very proud of the service rendered by our soldiers and veterans, and they are free to do with their awards and decorations as they please," George Wright, an Army spokesman at the Pentagon, said in an e-mail.

Acheson said the veterans don?t have high expectations for how NATO officials will receive their protest. He also noted that he was keeping some of his medals because he was proud of his service, even though he was upset that he ended up fighting in a country that had nothing to do with 9/11.

?I?m tired of seeing ? fellow vets being redeployed with traumatic brain injuries and post-traumatic stress disorder, and I?m tired of seeing soldiers being deployed in general to an illegal war,? he said. ?I just feel like we?ve spent enough money and enough lives over there ? it?s time to come home.?

Do you think returning war medals in protest is 'disrespectful' of other veterans?

JPM's Dimon to face calls to split top roles

TAMPA, Florida (Reuters) - Shareholders of JPMorgan Chase & Co gathered in the hundreds on Tuesday for its annual meeting as pressure rises on the company and Chief Executive Officer Jamie Dimon over billions of dollars in trading losses.

The meeting, at the bank's back-office complex in Tampa, Florida, will give investors their first crack at Dimon, who is also JPMorgan's chairman, since he revealed a soured hedging strategy had cost at least $2 billion.

Nearly two hours before the meeting began, the company appeared to have a heavy turnout on its hands, with half of the 300-plus seats already filled and the potential for many more people to come. Security guards started taking shareholders' coffee cups and water bottles as the meeting drew nearer.

Shareholders will also vote on proposals like splitting the roles of chairman and CEO.

The California Public Employees' Retirement System, the largest pension fund in the United States, will lead calls to strip Dimon of the chairmanship in a move it said would probably lead to better risk controls.

"CalPERS believes if the chairman was independent the board may be able to exercise stronger oversight of management," the organization said in a note setting out its voting intentions ahead of the meeting.

The group, which owns around $565 million of JPMorgan stock, said it would support executive compensation proposals, but warned it would "closely review" the effects of the trading losses when analyzing the 2013 say-on-pay vote.

The two leading proxy advisory firms -- ISS and Glass, Lewis -- are already backing the nonbinding proposal calling for a split of the jobs of chairman and CEO.

The California State Teachers Retirement System, the Florida State Board of Administration and the New York State Comptroller's office, which each oversee about $150 billion in assets, have said they will also vote for the split.

"Generally we support these kinds of proposals," said Ricardo Duran, information officer for CalSTRS. "We always look kindly on the separation of those two positions."

NOISY MEETING

JPMorgan is likely to face a barrage of questions about what Dimon knew, when he knew it and how a bank that has boasted of its "fortress" balance sheet could make such a major mistake.

The shakeup from those trades started Monday, as the company's chief investment officer retired.

The company now faces calls from some quarters for a "clawback" from departed executives who were responsible for the trades, including the retired CIO, Ina Drew. New York City Comptroller John Liu, who oversees the city's $400 million stake in JPMorgan, made such a call on Tuesday.

In its 2011 annual report, JPMorgan said its stock-based compensation awards were subject to such provisions. It said in its proxy filing that it could conduct a clawback review "as a result of a material restatement of earnings or by acts or omissions of employees."

JPMorgan can cancel unvested awards or require the value of distributed shares to be repaid when "the employee engages in conduct that causes material financial or reputational harm to the Firm or its business activities," according to the proxy.

Reuters was unable to reach Drew at her New Jersey home on Monday evening.

'F' ON CORPORATE GOVERNANCE

No matter the circumstances, governance experts expect some fireworks on Tuesday.

"It was going to be a noisy shareholder meeting anyway, but it's likely to be more boisterous than if it had been held before last Thursday," said Paul Hodgson, senior research associate of GMI Ratings.

The firm slapped its lowest rating - "F" - on JPMorgan's corporate governance policies before disclosure of the loss. Fewer than 5 percent of the companies rated by GMI get the bottom ranking, Hodgson said.

Many large shareholders wait until the last few days to vote, so the trading loss may influence some to withhold votes supporting management proposals or to actively support some shareholder resolutions.

Tim Piechowski, associate portfolio manager at ACR Alpine Capital Research, said his firm voted clients' shares in favor of the measure to split the chairman and CEO roles. But the decision was based on the firm's policy and was not related to the trading loss, Piechowski said in an email.

JPMorgan said in its proxy filing that the split was not necessary for Dimon. All other directors are independent under the rules of the New York Stock Exchange, and one is designated as a "presiding director."

William Frels, CEO of investment advisory group Mairs & Power, said via email that his firm was supporting management on all issues on the proxy. "The shares seem more like a 'buy' than a 'sell' from what we know about the loss so far," Frels said.

Although declines in JPMorgan shares following the announcement of the loss have wiped nearly $19 billion off the company's market value, many analysts and investors expect a rebound rather than a prolonged slump.

"We're not looking at losses in a portfolio that could continue deteriorating because of systemic issues," said Guggenheim Securities analyst Marty Mosby. "We're dealing with a hedging strategy that didn't work."

Tom Arnold to Appear in UEFA Champions League Final Coverage On FOX Sports

tom arnold Tom Arnold to Appear in UEFA Champions League Final Coverage On FOX Sports

Actor and comedian Tom Arnold will appear in a segment during this Saturday?s UEFA Champions League Final on FOX, the free-to-air network.

Arnold will be traveling to Munich to watch the final between Chelsea and Bayern Munich. Presumably Arnold will appear in a segment that will include highlights from his journey to Munich, and some of the interesting moments on the way to, and around the stadium.

Tom Arnold was the host of The Best Damn Sports Show Period for four years, and is best known for his role in the TV show, Roseanne, as well as his appearance in the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie True Lies.

On Twitter, Arnold was asked whether he was doing this project for FOX as part of a science experiment or because he watches soccer. Arnold replied, ?A bit of both.?

Arnold is a certainly a sports fanatic. The move by FOX is an obvious attempt to try to win over some of the mainstream sports fans out there who are not hardcore soccer fans, to bring them into the broadcast and hopefully to win them over.

For FOX?s coverage of the UEFA Champions League Final last year, FOX brought in NFL athlete Michael Strahan to describe the differences between ?football? and ?futbol.? It was an obvious attempt to provide a Soccer For Dummies guide to new viewers that fell flat on its face. My hope this year is that Arnold will be able to bridge the gap by providing an irreverent but insightful segment about his travels to Munich, together with some hard hitting soccer analysis from Eric Wynalda. We can only hope, right?

Veganism Safe for Kids, says Lisa Dorfman, Director of University of Miami's Nutrition Program

Last week, I reviewed Vegan Is Love, a children's book that explains the reasons behind the choice to go vegan. It contains a page dedicated to the health aspect of the lifestyle, but most of the book is devoted to outlining the ethics of veganism -- how animals are treated on the dairy farm, at the circus, and in the testing lab. One read-through of the beautiful book would convince most people that a vegan diet might be appealing to many sensitive, animal-loving children. That's probably why the book caused such a fearful uproar in some circles. But it still leaves one question unanswered: Is a vegan diet a healthful option for kids?

I went to Lisa Dorfman, board certified sports dietitian, registered dietitian, licensed mental health counselor, director of the Masters in Nutrition for Health & Human Performance Program in the Department of Kinesiology & Sport Sciences at University of Miami, and author of four books on nutrition including the The Vegetarian Sports Nutrition Guide. In addition to these accomplishments, she's been a vegetarian since the age of 15, run 34 marathons, been a professional triathlete, and had three healthy pregnancies. So I figured she was a relatively qualified person to consult on the matter. She outlined three main points of what people want to keep in mind when raising vegan kids.

1. Make Sure They Are Consuming Enough Calories

"Knowing what your nutritional needs are for how many calories are necessary to support your activities and your growth when it comes to the case of kids is absolutely critical."

2. Find Vegan Protein Sources Kids Like
"Protein is magical in the way that it does a lot of things in the body. It helps with growth, repair, the immune system. It builds collagen so that your skin, your hair, your tendons - everything that sort of glues you together is in tact. It helps with enzymes and hormones. But protein is overestimated," she added.

"What's important about protein is to get the nine essential amino acids, the building blocks of protein. It's like having all the players on the field at the same time." She said it's important for vegan kids to get a spectrum of foods to ensure they get all of the essential amino acids. Soy products, quinoa, and spirulina are all plant sources of complete protein, but kids can get all the essential amino acids by "mixing and matching," or eating a broad variety of incomplete protein sources (like nut butters, vegetables, and legumes) as well.

3. Feed Vegan Kids a Broad Variety of Foods
"Get a variety of all foods that give you all the vitamins and minerals that will help you to use all that wonderful energy that you're taking in," Dorfman advised. "Make sure they're getting enough vitamins and minerals and omega threes, which are essential for nerve sheaths and our brain cells and to help protect our joints from inflammation, as well as good fats which are anti-inflammatory and help us to absorb fat soluble vitamins." Good sources of these fats and omegas include nuts like walnuts and almonds, and seeds like pumpkin, sunflower, chia, and ground flax.

Dorfman said that many vegan products are fortified with essential vitamins and minerals like calcium, vitamin D, iron, and B-12, but that supplementation is a good idea for both vegan and non-vegan children because a body's ability to absorb these nutrients varies greatly with the individual.

As helpful as these guidelines are, what does a parent do if a vegan kid is super choosy and refuses to eat some of the healthy foods he needs? After all, most adults have trouble adjusting to the earthy, dirty flavor and dense green look of spirulina. The average child would probably spit it out in a slimy green cloud of disgust.

Dorfman said that parents of vegan children, just like parents of omnivorous children, have three great options to ensure they're brood are eating what they need: getting kids involved in the food prep process, creating exciting food presentations, and "hiding" the healthy stuff kids resist inside foods they like.

"With any child, you want to make food fun. Make the food come alive. Make little eyes with the raisins. Plant-based foods are very happy foods. They're not negative smelling. I used to have candles lit when I ate with my kids, because every meal is special," Dorfman said.

As far as sneaking in healthy stuff a child doesn't favor, Dorfman had these ideas. "Muffins, smoothies, soup, and vegan lasagna are great places to disguise less appealing veggies or additives for kids who are picky," Dorfman said.

Snacks she recommends for vegan youngsters include soy yogurt with berries, almonds, goji berries, almond cheese with apple slices, tart organic cherry juice, and soy-based breakfast bars. She says to avoid genetically modified (GMO) foods whenever possible.

"When I first became a vegetarian 30 years ago, there were potatoes and bread. Now there's a whole world out there for vegetarians. It's wonderful," she added.

So in answer to the question "Is veganism safe for kids?" here's Dorfman's bottom line:

"The typical American diet is pre-packaged food that's concocted from compounds and commercially created food-like substances. The American diet is pretty scary," Dorfman said. "Basically, the vegan diet can be superior in ensuring more antioxidants, less saturated fat and cholesterol, and less of the toxins that have contributed to chronic disease in the 21st century."
