Organize Any Closet In 5 Steps

??Image may be subject to copyright.

Many Closets are so cluttered that just opening the door can make your heart sink. In an organized closet everything is accessible and there is a feeling of peace when you open the door.?
?
How do you know when a closet needs organization?? If you can?t see what you have, can?t find what you want when you want it, and feel frustrated every time you look inside, your closet needs organizing.
?
Here are five steps to turn your jumbled closet into one you will love.
?

  1. Remove everything from the closet and spruce up the space.?

Wipe down walls and shelving, sweep it out or vacuum carpeting.? You are creating a masterpiece, so start with a clean canvas. If it?s a large closet, empty and clean it one section at a time to prevent discouragement and overwhelm.?
    ?
    ?

  2. Make three piles: 1) things to keep, 2) things to sell or give away, 3) things to throw out.?
    ?
  3. If you are organizing a clothes closet, everything you keep should fit, be in style and be ready to wear.? If an item is uncomfortable or ill-fitting, stained, ripped, worn out, outdated, or inappropriate for your age or the image you desire to project, it may be time to let it go.
    ?
If you are organizing a storage closet, the things you keep should be in good and usable condition and worthy of the space they take.
    ?
If an item is in good condition, but no longer useful for your lifestyle, box or bag it up for charity or your next garage sale, or to pass on to someone you know who may better use it.
    ?
If it?s torn, broken, cracked, discolored, or in overall disrepair, and not capable of being repaired or refurbished, it?s probably time to throw it out.?
    ?
If you are uncertain about an item, move it to another location to look at it again later.? When the time comes to reassess your decision, ask yourself:?? ?Do I really love it??? ?Do I, or will I, ever use it??? If the answer is ?no? get rid of it.
    ?
    ?

  4. Take the ?throwaways? directly to the trash, and the ?giveaways? directly to your vehicle.
    ?

If your charitable donations are already in your car, the next time you are out and about you will be prepared to drop them off.? Another benefit of getting these things immediately out of the house is that you will create space within your environment that can be used for additional sorting, organizing and decluttering.
?

  1. Put back the items you are keeping so you can see and access everything easily.?
    ?

There are several ways to organize a clothes closet:
????????? By season: ?hang the in-season items in the more convenient location of your closet and out-of-season clothes toward the back, stored in plastic bins, or in another location.
????????? By use:? keep categories of clothes such as work, casual, evening, exercise or sports grouped together.
????????? By complete outfit: ?assemble everything for a single outfit together, including shoes and accessories.?
????????? By color palette:? group everything together that goes with black, same for brown and navy.
????????? By ?item type: ?keep all items of the same classification together, such as pants, blouses or shirts, sweaters, dresses, etc.
?
Use your lifestyle to decide which system best works for you.? If you have to dress up for work each day, you may want to have complete outfits at the ready to minimize the amount of time you need each day to dress and prepare.? If you are under no time pressure when choosing your daily outfit, any of the systems can work.
?
Other ways to keep your clothes closets organized and clutter-free are:
????????? Use sturdy hangers and avoid wire hangers as they rust, bend and do not provide good support for garments.?
????????? Whenever possible utilize the shelf and wall space to stack or hang items.? However, do not overload or assign too many items to one system.? For example, if you put up wall hooks for bags or purses, decide that you will put no more than three items on one hook.
????????? By all means, keep as much off the floor as possible.? Stuff on the floor can be a safety hazard, as well as contribute to excessive and unnecessary wear and tear on garments.
?

  1. Prevent future closet clutter by making a commitment to maintenance and conscious consumption.
    ?

Make maintaining an organized closet an ongoing activity.?? Organization is not a one-time job because things don?t stay organized without attention and maintenance.? Quarterly sessions scheduled into your calendar for regular maintenance can make keeping closets organized easier.
?
When shopping, ask yourself if you can use something you already own to fill a need before you buy something new.? Don?t fall into the trap of thinking you will take it back if it doesn?t work or you decide you don?t need it.? Few people follow through on that commitment.
?
I cannot overstate and the power and joy of organizing and decluttering your closets.? Once you start, you will feel a change in the flow of energy, experience increased satisfaction, and save money and time.? Remember, less is more. If you have only what you love, looks good, and what perfectly fits your lifestyle, you?ll have more confidence, energy and success.
?
Perhaps these following famous people can better drive the point home:
?
True elegance consists not in having a closet bursting with clothes, but rather in having a few well-chosen numbers in which one feels totally at ease.?? Coco Chanel

They should put expiration dates on clothes, so we would know when they go out of style.??? Gary Shandling

I did not have 3,000 pairs of shoes.? I had 1,600.? Imelda Marcos

Study ties oil, gas production to Midwest quakes

NEW YORK (AP) ? Oil and gas production may explain a sharp increase in small earthquakes in the nation's midsection, a new study from the U.S. Geological Survey suggests.

The rate has jumped six-fold from the late 20th century through last year, the team reports, and the changes are "almost certainly man-made."

Outside experts were split in their opinions about the report, which is not yet published but is due to be presented at a meeting later this month.

The study said a relatively mild increase starting in 2001 comes from increased quake activity in a methane production area along the state line between Colorado and New Mexico. The increase began about the time that methane production began there, so there's a "clear possibility" of a link, says lead author William Ellsworth of the USGS.

The increase over the nation's midsection has gotten steeper since 2009, due to more quakes in a variety of oil and gas production areas, including some in Arkansas and Oklahoma, the researchers say.

It's not clear how the earthquake rates might be related to oil and gas production, the study authors said. They note that others have linked earthquakes to injecting huge amounts of leftover wastewater deep into the earth.

There has been concern about potential earthquakes from a smaller-scale injection of fluids during a process known as hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, which is used to recover gas. But Ellsworth said Friday he is confident that fracking is not responsible for the earthquake trends his study found, based on prior studies.

The study covers a swath of the United States that lies roughly west of Ohio and east of Utah. It counted earthquakes of magnitude 3 and above.

Magnitude 3 quakes are mild, and may be felt by only a few people in the upper floors of buildings, or may cause parked cars to rock slightly. The biggest counted in the study was a magnitude-5.6 quake that hit Oklahoma last Nov. 5, damaging dozens of homes. Experts said it was too strong to be linked to oil and gas production.

The researchers reported that from 1970 to 2000, the region they studied averaged about 21 quakes a year. That rose to about 29 a year for 2001 through 2008, they wrote, and the three following years produced totals of 50, 87 and 134, respectively.

The study results make sense and are likely due to man-made stress in the ground, said Rowena Lohman, a Cornell University geophysicist.

"The key thing to remember is magnitude 3s are really small," Lohman said. "We've seen this sort of behavior in the western United States for a long time."

Usually, it's with geothermal energy, dams or prospecting. With magnitude 4 quakes, a person standing on top of them would at most feel like a sharp jolt, but mostly don't last long enough to be a problem for buildings, she said.

The idea is to understand how the man-made activity triggers quakes, she said. One possibility is that the injected fluids change the friction and stickiness of minerals on fault lines. Another concept is that they change the below-surface pressure because the fluid is trapped and builds, and then "sets off something that's about ready to go anyway," Lohman said.

But another expert was not convinced of a link to oil and gas operations.

Austin Holland, the Oklahoma state seismologist, said the new work presents an "interesting hypothesis" but that the increase in earthquake rates could simply be the result of natural processes.

Holland said clusters of quakes can occur naturally, and that scientists do not yet fully understand the natural cycles of seismic activity in the central United States. Comprehensive earthquake records for the region go back only a few decades, he said, while natural cycles stretch for tens of thousands of years. So too little is known to rule out natural processes for causing the increase, he said.

Kodiak brown bear on the lam from wildlife refuge

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) ? An Alaska wildlife center that takes in orphaned and injured animals is missing one of its larger residents.

The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center announced Monday that a 300-pound, 2-year-old female Kodiak brown bear escaped six days ago from its enclosure near Portage. The bear had been destined for a zoo in Sweden in early summer.

The center is in a rural area at the southernmost end of Anchorage, about 40 miles from downtown. The center is near wild areas of the Chugach National Forest and the bear was last seen Tuesday night in mountains between the Portage and Placer valleys, the center said.

The bear had been named Shaguyik (sheh-GOY'-uk), an Eskimo name for "ghost" or "shadow," according to the center website.

It's the first time the center has had an escape, said executive director Mike Miller.

"We had our electric fence turned off for maintenance and during that time, something spooked Shaguyik," Miller said in the announcement. "Unfortunately, this year's heavy snow load required us to fix our electric fence and that's when the incident occurred."

The bear climbed over the fence to escape, said center spokesman Ethan Tyler.

The bear was found on its own in December 2010 on Kodiak Island at a season when most bears were denned up for the winter, according to the center's website. She was flown to Anchorage for care. A veterinarian spayed her in November.

She carries a microchip but is not wearing a collar and has no identifying tags. The nonprofit center is the custodian of the bear under a permit but it remains the possession of the state, Tyler said.

The center is the permanent home of five bears. Shaguyik and another young bear were under the center's care until they could be moved to a Swedish zoo in June.

The center is working with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game to find the blond bear from the air and with searchers on the ground. The center held off announcing the escape on the advice of the department in part to avoid having people come down to search for the animal and create congestion, Tyler said.

Center officials warned that the bear should not be approached.

"Even though Shaguyik has been in captivity most of her life, the public should treat this bear with extreme caution," Miller said. "Because of its habituation, Shaguyik may not respond the same as wild bears and avoid human interaction. If someone sees the bear, the best thing to do is keep your distance and contact the authorities."

Raised farming beds indicate sustainable use of globally important ecosystems

In the face of mass deforestation of the Amazon, recent findings indicate that we could learn from its earliest inhabitants who managed their farmland sustainably. An international team of archaeologists and paleoecologists, including Dr. Mitchell Power, curator of the Garrett Herbarium at the Natural History Museum of Utah and assistant professor in the Department of Geography at the University of Utah, report for the first time that indigenous people, living in the savannas around the Amazonian forest, farmed without using fire. These findings are published today, April 9, 2012, in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The research could provide insights into the sustainable use and conservation of these globally-important ecosystems, which are being rapidly destroyed. Pressure on the Amazonian savannas today is intense, with the land being rapidly transformed for industrial agriculture and cattle ranching.

By analyzing records of pollen, charcoal and other plant remains like phytoliths spanning more than 2,000 years, the team has created the first detailed picture of land use in the Amazonian savannas in French Guiana. This gives a unique perspective on the land before and after the first Europeans arrived in 1492.

The research shows that the early inhabitants of these Amazonian savannas practiced 'raised-field' farming, which involved constructing small agricultural mounds with wooden tools. These raised fields provided better drainage, soil aeration and moisture retention: ideal for an environment that experiences both drought and flooding. The fields also benefited from increased fertility from the muck continually scraped from the flooded basin and deposited on the mounds. The raised-field farmers limited fires, and this helped them conserve soil nutrients and organic matter and preserve soil structure.

"We used radiocarbon dating to establish the age of the raised beds," said Dr. Mitchell Power. We came to the conclusion that corn pollen we found dated to 800 years ago by dating charcoal deposits from above and below the sediment where the pollen was found."

It has long been assumed that indigenous people used fire as a way of clearing the savannas and managing their land. However, this new research shows that this was not the case here. Instead, it reveals a sharp increase in fires with the arrival of the first Europeans, an event known as the 'Columbian Encounter'. The study shows that this labor-intensive approach to farming in the Amazonian savannas was lost when as much as 95 percent of the indigenous population was wiped out as a result of Old World diseases, brought by European settlers.

The results of this study are in sharp contrast with what is known about the Columbian Encounter's impact on tropical forest, where the collapse of indigenous populations after 1492 led to decreased forest clearance for agriculture, which in turn, caused a decline in burning. This study shows that high fire incidence in these Amazonian savannas is a post-1492, rather than pre-1492, phenomenon. "Our results force reconsideration of the long-held view that fires were a pervasive feature of Amazonian savannas, said Power"

Dr Jos Iriarte of the University of Exeter, lead author on the paper, said: "This ancient, time-tested, fire-free land use could pave the way for the modern implementation of raised-field agriculture in rural areas of Amazonia. Intensive raised-field agriculture can become an alternative to burning down tropical forest for slash and burn agriculture by reclaiming otherwise abandoned and new savannah ecosystems created by deforestation. It has the capability of helping curb carbon emissions and at the same time provide food security for the more vulnerable and poorest rural populations."

Professor Doyle McKey of the University of Montpellier said: "Amazonian savannas are among the most important ecosystems on Earth, supporting a rich variety of plants and animals. They are also essential to managing climate. Whereas savannas today are often associated with frequent fire and high carbon emissions, our results show that this was not always so. With global warming, it is more important than ever before that we find a sustainable way to manage savannas. The clues to how to achieve this could be in the 2,000 years of history that we have unlocked."

Dr Francis Mayle of the University of Edinburgh said: "We've got an unprecedented record of these Amazonian savannas that completely overturns previous assumptions about the way in which ancient cultures utilized these globally-important ecosystems."

Dr Stephen Rostain of CNRS said "These raised-field systems can be as productive as the man-made black soils of the Amazon, but with the added benefit of low carbon emissions."

The study was carried out by a team from the University of Exeter (UK), Natural History Museum of Utah (US), Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (France), University of Edinburgh (UK), Universit Montpellier II and Centre d'Ecologie Fonctionnelle et Evolutive (France). It was funded by two CNRS Programmes ('Amazonie' and 'Ingnierie Ecologique'), the Arts and Humanities Research Council and The Leverhulme Trust.

The research featured in the PNAS article highlights two areas of active research at the Natural History Museum.

During the past four years at the Natural History Museum of Utah, Dr. Power has been developing a modern pollen reference collection based on vouchered specimens archived in the herbarium collection. The majority of the plant specimens in the herbarium collection were collected during their period of flowering, thus the Museum plant collection provides opportunities to study the plant ecology such as the timing of flowering as well as the pollen morphology for each species. Pollen is preserved in lakes and bogs for thousands of years and the ability to identify plants through there pollen, has allowed Power and this international team of scientists to document the types of crops and natural vegetation present thousands of years ago when raised-field farmers occupied the savannas of coastal French Guiana.

Secondly, the research in French Guiana contributes to an ongoing effort by Power and other international colleagues of building a global fire history database. This global database allows comparisons across continents, latitudes, longitudes and any area where the history of fire activity has been recorded. To date, nearly 1000 locations have been studied for their fire history. In the case of the French Guiana research, we found a pattern of increasing fire after 1500 AD, which is contrary to the robust patterns we have observed from over 300 charcoal records from the Americas that show decreasing fire at the same time.

How To Become Wise In The Ways Of Personal Finance | One ...

Maintaining control over your personal finance is very important in ensuring that you have money during an emergency or for an important purchase. By taking a few simple steps, you can budget your money. Read this article for tips on how to manage your personal finances to your benefit.

Know the price of the car you want before going into the dealership. Just knowing this one piece of information makes it much more difficult for dealers to inflate the amount of money you pay using smoke and mirrors. If you can obtain bank financing, all the better, as dealers can?t try to trick you with poor financing terms when your loan comes from an external source.

Personal finance also includes estate planning. This includes, but is not limited to, drawing up a will, assigning a power of attorney (both financial and medical) and setting up a trust. Power of attorneys give someone the right to make decisions for you in the event that you can not make them for yourself. This should only be given to someone whom you trust to make decisions in your best interest.

Going to stores that are about to go out of business or be turned into a different store, can often produce items that can be bought at a greatly discounted price. Getting items you need or can resell at a higher price can both benefit your personal finances.

Create a budget ? and stick to it. Make a note of your spending habits over the course of a month. Track where every penny goes so you can figure out where you need to cut back. Once your budget is set for the month, if you find you spend less than planned, use the extra money to pay down your debt.

One of the tips to maximizing your personal finances is to buy or make a coin jar in your house. Put this jar in your kitchen so that you can empty all of the loose change into the jar each day. Over time, this will add up as you should bank hundreds of dollars.

Put timers on your electrical lights. It is amazing how much leaving one or two unneeded lights burning in the house will inflate your electrical bill over time. Children, in particular, have problems remembering to turn lights off. In rooms like the bathroom, where time spent there is minimal, timers can really pay off.

To improve your personal finance habits, try to organize your billing cycles so that multiple bills such as credit card payments, loan payments, or other utilities are not due at the same time as one another. This can help you to avoid late payment fees and other missed payment penalties.

Keep an emergencey supply of money on hand to be better prepared for personal finance disasters. At some point, everyone is going to run into trouble. Whether it is an unexpected illness, or a natural disaster, or something else that is terrible. The best we can do is plan for them by having some extra money set aside for these types of emergencies.

Always consider a used car before buying new. Pay cash when possible, to avoid financing. A car will depreciate the minute you drive it off the lot. Should your financial situation change and you have to sell it, you might find it?s worth less than you owe. This can quickly lead to financial failure if you?re not careful.

Movies are extremely expensive, whether you are going out to the theatres or purchasing on DVD. Two alternatives that you can try are movies at the library or through Netflix. These options will give you a wide assortment of the movies that you love at a much better price for your budget.

Set yourself a monthly budget and don?t go over it. Since most people live paycheck to paycheck, it can be easy to overspend each month and put yourself in the hole. Determine what you can afford to spend, including putting money into savings and keep close track of how much you have spent for each budget line.

If you have a parent or other relative with good credit, consider repairing your credit score by asking them to add you an authorized user on their card. This will immediately bump up your score, as it will show up on your report as an account in good standing. You don?t even actually have to use the card to gain a benefit from it.

Never co-sign a loan for anyone!!! No matter how much you think you can trust them, if the debt is not something you are willing to pay off, just don?t do it. If you do, and they don?t pay, the debt will be your responsibility, and you will have to fork up the money.

Get a high yield savings account. Your rainy day funds or emergency savings should be stored in a savings account with the highest interest rate you can find. Do not use CD?s or other term savings which would penalize you for taking your money out early. These accounts need to be liquid in case you need to use them for emergencies.

After you?ve developed a clear cut budget, then develop a savings plan. Say you spend 75% of your income on bills, leaving 25%. With that 25%, determine what percentage you will save and what percentage will be your fun money. In this way, over time, you will develop a savings.

Recycle and reuse to save big bucks. Why constantly add to the environmental problems associated with manufacturing and landfills? Anything that can possibly be reused should be reused. It?s not shameful to do this. It is practical and admirable not just from an environmental standpoint but also from a personal finance standpoint.

You don?t have to be an accountant or an expert with money, in order to apply more financial planning to your income. By doing a few easy things, like making shopping lists and keeping bank statements, you can manage your personal finances very well. Remember the tips in this article to make sure you don?t waste money!

If they?re past due, it?ll show up that you are past due after which hurt your own credit score or financial debt additional.

PSA: AT&T now unlocking out-of-contract iPhones
In case you've been living under a rock (or enjoying the weekend holidays), AT&T on Friday revealed its plans to start unlocking out-of-contract iPhones. However, customers looking to take advantage of the deal will have to meet a few requirements first, which include having an account in good standing (so pay those past due fees before inquiring), a fulfilled contract, paid an early termination fee or that a handset upgrade was done. The unlocking process can be achieved at any brick-and-mortar shop, online via chat or by dialing AT&T's 611. For what it's worth, we tried this and found it to be pretty straightforward. In this writer's case, it only took about 40 minutes after the initial approval went through. The most tedious step was that required restore, after which we were greeted with a joyful "congratulations your iPhone has been unlocked" message. Still, users are reporting mixed results: depending on whose account you believe, AT&T is asking users to wait 72 hours, or telling folks the unlock will complete on April 16th. Be sure to let us know in the comments how it's all turning out for you.

Researcher says cost of gasoline may hit plateau

The average price for a gallon of gasoline in the United States rose 3.74 cents over the past two weeks, the smallest increase since January, according to the nationwide Lundberg Survey.

The national average of a gallon of regular gasoline rose to $3.9671 on April 6, according to the survey of about 2,500 gasoline retailers.

That was smaller than the 11.49-cent increase in the prior survey for the two weeks ended March 23.

"If crude oil will stay where it is then gasoline prices will peak very, very quickly, if they have not done so already," survey editor Trilby Lundberg told Reuters on Sunday.

Gas prices already are falling in some cities, such as Chicago and Los Angeles, Lundberg said.

"They are dropping in many markets of the West and the Midwest," Lundberg said.

Lundberg also said significant unused capacity exists at U.S. refineries in case demand spikes.

"We are heading into the stronger demand season, but with all that unused capacity there should be a continued abundance of gasoline supply," Lundberg said.

Chicago tallied the highest average price among cities covered by the survey, at $4.45 per gallon, although that marked a 11-cent drop from the prior survey. Tulsa, Oklahoma was the lowest, at $3.66.
