Like Olympian McKayla Maroney, Obama is not impressed

Oh Mitt Romney. We really thought we and Jon Stewart were through with you and vice versa. Thankfully you and we are not. To be honest, it was sort of weird when we heard that Mitt Romney's "gifts" story on Wednesday?he had lost a brutal election, he had all those embarrassing stories written about how he was completely abandoned on election night, and most of all, we thought that we could finally be done with the 47 percent video. ...

TV review: Unreported World ? Dominican Baseball Dreams

Quiz question: which city produces more Major League Baseball players per capita than any other? New York? Philadelphia? Boston? Detroit? Nope, it's San Pedro de Macor?s in the Dominican Republic. In the US, a boy can't sign for a club until he's got a high-school diploma, normally when he's 18 or 19 years old. But America's scouts like them much younger than that, so they go to the Caribbean instead, where kids can drop out of school at 14.

Unreported World: Dominican Baseball Dreams (Channel 4) is a departure for this foreign-affairs strand, which normally reports from areas of conflict and danger. No blue flak jacket required this time ? but the story is powerful and shocking.

The trouble is, for every Julio Lugo (no, me neither) who makes it to the big time, there are 1,000 kids who don't, and who then have nothing to fall back on because they left school at 14. Like Jose Miguel, who was once a major-league prospect and offered contracts, but his greedy trainer held out for more, and Jose ended up with nothing.

Exactly the same now appears to be happening to Miguel's nephew, Patterson Segura, the main character in reporter Seyi Rhodes's film. Patterson, a talented and likable 16-year-old who can pitch a ball at 90mph, has a couple of offers at around the $40,000-50,000 mark. Which is fine by Patterson and his granny who raised him, but his trainer Jovanny says no, he wants more.

Rhodes asks Jovanny what happens to the ones who get left by the wayside. "Drugs ? because of the frustration," Jovanny says. "Alcohol, depression and madness." So take the 50 bloody grand, for God's sake, for Patterson's sake, I'm shouting at the telly. You're half the?problem.

On my preview copy, there's no postscript, no news of what happened to Patterson. Hopefully there is on the final version. And hopefully it's good news for Patterson ? not three strikes and he's out.

Clues to cause of kids' brain tumors

ScienceDaily (Nov. 15, 2012) ? Insights from a genetic condition that causes brain cancer are helping scientists better understand the most common type of brain tumor in children.

In new research, scientists at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis have identified a cell growth pathway that is unusually active in pediatric brain tumors known as gliomas. They previously identified the same growth pathway as a critical contributor to brain tumor formation and growth in neurofibromatosis-1 (NF1), an inherited cancer predisposition syndrome.

"This suggests that the tools we've been developing to diagnose and treat NF1 may also be helpful for sporadic brain tumors," says senior author David H. Gutmann, MD, PhD, the Donald O. Schnuck Family Professor of Neurology.

The findings appear Dec. 1 in Genes and Development.

NF1 is among the most common tumor predisposition syndromes, but it accounts for only about 15 percent of pediatric low-grade gliomas known as pilocytic astrocytomas. The majority of these brain tumors occur sporadically in people without NF1.

Earlier research showed that most sporadic pilocytic astrocytomas possess an abnormal form of a signaling protein known as BRAF. In tumor cells, a piece of another protein is erroneously fused to the business end of BRAF.

Scientists suspected that the odd protein fusion spurred cells to grow and divide more often, leading to tumors. However, when they gave mice the same aberrant form of BRAF, they observed a variety of results. Sometimes gliomas formed, but in other cases, there was no discernible effect or a brief period of increased growth and cell division. In other studies, the cells grew old and died prematurely.

Gutmann, director of the Washington University Neurofibromatosis Center, previously showed that mouse NF1-associated gliomas arise from certain brain cells.

According to Gutmann, the impact of abnormal NF1 gene function on particular cell types helps explain why gliomas are most often found in the optic nerves and brainstem of children with NF1 -- these areas are where the susceptible cell types reside.

With that in mind, Gutmann and his colleagues tested the effects of the unusual fusion BRAF protein in neural stem cells from the cerebellum, where sporadic pilocytic astrocytomas often form, and in cells from the cortex, where the tumors almost never develop.

"Abnormal BRAF only results in increased growth when it is placed in neural stem cells from the cerebellum, but not the cortex," Gutmann says. "We also found that putting fusion BRAF into mature glial cells from the cerebellum had no effect."

When fusion BRAF causes increased cell proliferation, postdoctoral fellows Aparna Kaul, PhD and Yi-Hsien Chen, PhD, showed that it activates the same cellular growth pathway, called mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), that is normally also controlled by the NF1 protein. An extensive body of research into the mTOR pathway already exists, including potential treatments to suppress its function in other forms of cancer.

"We may be able to leverage these insights and our previous work in NF1 to improve the treatment of these common pediatric brain tumors, and that's very exciting," Gutmann says.

Gutmann and his colleagues are now working to identify more of the factors that make particular brain cells vulnerable to the tumor-promoting effects of the NF1 gene mutation and fusion BRAF. They are also developing animal models of sporadic pilocytic astrocytoma for drug discovery and testing.

The Top Strengths of Obama & Romney | Psychology Today

Just a month ago the VIA Institute on Character launched a new survey that asked people what character strengths are essential in a great President. The survey then invited the user to rate the character strengths of the Presidential candidates.

The results are in!...just in time for Election Day. I?ll start with the conclusions and then offer more details.

Conclusions:

  1. Regardless of political affiliation or preference for this election, the top 4 character strengths of the ?ideal President? are:
    1. Leadership
    2. Honesty
    3. Judgment
    4. Fairness
  2. Most people do NOT see either candidate as closely resembling what they are looking for in terms of presidential character.?
    1. The evidence: With one exception, the endorsement rate of these 4 ?ideal? character strengths for the candidates is under 50% (the exception is the strength of leadership for Romney).?
    2. Interpretation: With the exception of Romney and the trait of leadership, these results suggest that neither candidate has been actively and deliberately managing the perception of their character strengths.?
  3. Romney has done a better job than Obama in portraying himself as a leader.?
  4. Obama has done a better job than Romney in portraying himself as being fair.?
  5. Given the role of character in voting behavior (other polls have noted character is the most important factor in casting one?s vote), it behooves candidates to focus more on consistently demonstrating their own character strengths.
  6. Undecided voters seem to see Obama more positively than Romney on the top four character strengths of the ?ideal President.??

Now, for more details?.

Method
:?

A convenience sample of 1,703 people from across the nation (52% female; 48% male) responded to an online survey asking them to identify from 24 character strengths a.) those that they would ideally like to see in the next president, and b.) those that they see as most prominent in each of the presidential candidates.?

Results:

1.? Ideal Character Strengths:?

A strong finding was that the total sample and all demographic subsamples had the same vision of the top 4 most important character strengths they would ideally like to see in the next president.? These characteristics, in order of importance, are: leadership, honesty, judgment, and fairness.

*Total Responses: 1703

?Leadership: 80%

?Honesty: 75%

?Judgment: 53%

?Fairness: 40%

*see below for definitions

2.? Candidates Results on Top 4 Ideal Character Strengths
:

a.????? Across all respondents and within all subsamples Mitt Romney is seen by more people as possessing leadership than is President Obama.? For the entire sample 63% endorse leadership as one of Romney?s core character traits while 33% identify leadership as core to Obama?s character.

b.????? Across all respondents President Obama is seen as possessing the fourth most important ?ideal? character strength ? fairness ? to a greater extent than Romney.? 39% of respondents identified fairness as one of Obama?s top character strengths while 17% identified fairness as core for Romney.

c.?????? Across all respondents Romney is seen by slightly more people as possessing honesty and judgment compared with Obama, but these differences are within the margin of error and not likely to be significant.

3.? Undecided Respondents:?

Of the total sample 7% identified themselves as ?undecided?.? Of those respondents Romney comes out ahead of Obama on leadership (52% vs. 29%) BUT Obama comes out ahead on the others:

Honesty: Obama 24% Romney 14%

Judgment: Obama 23% Romney 15%

Fairness: Obama 38% Romney 6%

?

4.? Candidates Top Character Strengths

Obama's top-rated strengths: Fairness 39%; social intelligence 38%; hope 35%; honesty 33%; leadership 33%.? ?A fair, honest and hopeful leader who understands what makes people tick.?

Romney top-rated strengths: Leadership 63%; spirituality 42%; honesty 40%; judgment 36%; perseverance 34% ?An honest and spiritual leader who exercises good judgment and is perseverant.?

?

*Definitions:

Judgment:? Thinking things through and examining them from all sides are important aspects of who this candidate is. He does not jump to conclusions, and he relies only on solid evidence to make his decisions. He is able to change his mind.

Leadership: This candidate excels at the tasks of leadership: encouraging a group to get things done and preserving harmony within the group by making everyone feel included. He does a good job organizing activities and seeing that they happen.

Honesty: This candidate is an honest person, not only by speaking the truth but by living his life in a genuine and authentic way. He is down to earth and without pretense; He is a "real" person

Fairness:? Treating all people fairly is one of this candidate's abiding principles. He does not let his personal feelings bias his decisions about other people. He gives everyone a chance.

Don?t Give in to Hate

The Phantom Menace. Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor in The Phantom Menace.

Lucasfilm Ltd.

Accompanying the announcement last week that Disney will acquire George Lucas? Lucasfilm for more than $4 billion came the news that a new trilogy of Star Wars films will be produced and released, starting as early as 2015. Regardless of their content, Episodes VII-IX will almost certainly be dismissed by scores of adults, men and women in their 30s and 40s who have consistently rejected nearly all attempts to reinvigorate the franchise. (Indeed, the criticism has already begun.) As an avid fan of the franchise and the father of a young Star Wars devotee, I am on the other extreme?I can?t wait for the release of Episode VII. I fully expect Episodes VII-IX to be as entertaining and irresistible as the original trilogy?and believe they have the potential to be most enjoyable Star Wars movies yet.

George Lucas first disappointed Star Wars fans in 1999, when, giving in to demand, he produced the first of three prequels (Episodes I-III). Though successful at the box office and in terms of merchandising, the films were widely panned by adult fans on any number of grounds (from the quality of acting, to weak and possibly racist characters, to the use of CGI rather than the crude but beloved methods of animation available 20 or so years earlier).

I was one such critic. Born in 1977, the year Star Wars was released, I grew up on the original films and adored pretty much everything about the franchise. I (somehow) convinced my then-girlfriend (now wife) to see Episode I: The Phantom Menace the day it opened. I was appalled. Jar Jar Binks, a major character in the film, was embarrassingly silly and uncomfortably servile. The conflict underlying the film was a byzantine trade dispute that to this day I do not fully understand. The computer-generated animation of characters such as Watto (a small, flying creature with a tight fist and a vaguely Semitic nose) was not at all realistic, and the live-action actors sharing the screen with him looked every bit as though they were conversing with a character to be inserted later. I was so disgusted with Episode I that I didn?t bother to see Episodes II and III in the theater. I was in solidarity with my peers?Episodes I-III should never have been made.

Then, in January 2008, my son was born. ?Though I had been put off by the prequels, my love of the original trilogy still burned bright, and I was eager to introduce my son to Luke, Yoda, Obi-Wan, and Vader. By the age of 4 he had seen the original trilogy?the only trilogy that mattered?so many times that he longed for more. I reluctantly allowed him to watch Episodes I-III, and was surprised to discover that he liked them just as much as Episodes IV-VI, if not more so. As we further expanded our Star Wars Universe to include the animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars movie (2008) and the animated TV series of the same name (currently airing on the Cartoon Network), it finally dawned on me that as a thirtysomething veteran of the original trilogy, I was no longer a member George Lucas? target audience.

These movies are for children. Let me say that one more time: They are children?s movies, like Wreck It Ralph or Madagascar or Alvin and the Chipmunks. And George Lucas, to his great credit, speaks as well to children today as he did in the ?70s and ?80s. In fact, it is possible that he has gotten better?in my experience, today?s kids seem to identify far more with Anakin than Luke Skywalker, with Jango Fett than his son Boba (a cult hero of the original trilogy), and with clone trooper Captain Rex than with Han Solo or Chewbacca.

I know what you?re thinking, fellow Star Wars die-hards: Today?s kids are just mistaken. As they mature, they will come to recognize the superiority of the films and characters from the original trilogy. I humbly submit that this position is just plain wrong. Having been inundated by everything Star Wars over the past three years, I now see clearly that the original trilogy is not nearly as good as we?d like to remember it?and Episodes I-III are on equal footing with, and at times surpass, their predecessors.
