Student Computers | Computer and Technology

A home computer or laptop has become very much of a necessity for the majority of students these days and most young people will have access to a PC or laptop at home. For those who are embarking upon a college or university education it is probably advisable to have a dedicated laptop that they will use solely for their studies. Not only will a typical further education student require constant access to the household?s computer but they may also be staying away from home and in this instance a laptop is more or less essential.

Thankfully the cost of computers overall has fallen considerably and as technology progresses then so the affordability increases. You really don?t have to spend the earth to get a good quality laptop and even budget ranges offer fantastic value when compared to what a machine with a similar specification would have cost 2 or more years ago.

What to buy ? obviously your personal budget will be the main factor, as will the type of course you are enrolled upon.

For most instances a machine which can run office applications such as word processing and spreadsheets will be more than adequate. For those studying advanced subjects involving complex designs then a machine with a dedicated graphics card may be worth considering.

Before buying a computer it?s probably a good idea to look through the course prospectus to see what applications you?ll be using. There should be a list of computer programs involved in the coursework and you can check what the minimum requirements will need to be in terms of available memory and storage capacity.

A laptop with an advanced dual core microprocessor and 2 or 3GB of RAM memory will usually be sufficient for most applications.

Everyday Usage ? it?s worth remembering that, although commonplace, a laptop computer is still a sophisticated and delicate machine and will need to be taken care of.

Also, it?s worth getting into good habits regarding battery maintenance and backing up the memory. Computers do get stolen and damaged so it?s essential that you adopt a regular back-up procedure at least once a week. Although this can become a hassle after a while you?ll certainly be grateful if the worst does come to the worst and you lose all your hard work.

Back-up options ? Saving your work to a CD or DVD each month is a good practice to adopt. However, this kind of media back-up is notoriously unreliable, so it?s a good idea to have a secondary back-up option . This could be in the form of an external memory drive or may simply involve transferring files to a main PC. A handy way to back-up office documents is to send them to your own email account as an attachment. Not only is this a quick and simple precaution, it also puts your files on a remote server which you?ll be able to access from any computer.

Basic Software ? as already mentioned this will depend to a large extent on the type of course you are studying. However, a basic office suite of applications will be essential. Word Processing, Spreadsheets and Presentation applications will be used often. There are free versions around which are very good or you may prefer to just buy a version of MS Office and put this on your computer. A graphics program may also be required and again there are free programs available. Some specialist applications such as PhotoShop or AutoCAD will be available with a student licence at a much reduced cost for a limited time.

An anti-virus and security program will also be essential; the paid for versions are usually best but again there are free options. Most importantly it is essential that these programs are updated regularly and a full scan carried out at least once a week.

Maintenance ? modern laptops are generally maintenance free and will run for several years without any major problems. It?s a good idea to make sure the battery goes through a regular cycle of re-charge and discharge to ensure it performs at its best. Other than this it?s just a case of ensuring the laptop is kept in a suitably secure place and transported in a padded case to ensure it doesn?t get knocked about.

Modern laptop computers are extremely powerful educational tools and will serve you well throughout your time at college. If looked after correctly your laptop will not let you down and see you through college and into the start of your new career.

Researchers hope to contribute to the development of therapies for human myopathies

This release is available in German.

Every cell is enclosed by a thin double layer of lipids that separates the distinct internal environment of the cell from the extracellular space. Damage to this lipid bilayer, also referred to as plasma membrane, disturbs the cellular functions and may lead to the death of the cell. For example, downhill walking tears many little holes into the plasma membranes of the muscle cells in our legs. To prevent irreparable damage, muscle cells have efficient systems to seal these holes again. Researchers at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and Heidelberg University have succeeded for the first time in observing membrane repair in real-time in a living organism.

The results were published in the recent issue of the journal Developmental Cell. Using a novel high-resolution imaging method, Prof. Uwe Strhle and Dr. Urmas Roostalu for the first time observed membrane repair in real time in a living animal. They tagged repair proteins with fluorescent proteins in muscle of the transparent zebrafish larvae. With a laser, the researchers burned tiny holes into the plasma membrane of muscle cells and followed the repair of the holes under the microscope. They showed that membrane vesicles together with two proteins Dysferlin and Annexin A6 rapidly form a repair patch. Other Annexins accumulate subsequently on the injured membrane. These studies by Karlsruhe and Heidelberg researchers suggest that the cell assembles a multilayered repair patch from the inside that seals off the cell's interior from the extracellular environment. Moreover, it was found that there is a specialized membrane area that supplies rapidly the membrane that is needed for sealing the plasma membrane hole.

This animal model for membrane repair will contribute to the identification of new proteins in this sealing process and will help elucidate the underlying mechanisms. The results may contribute to the development of therapies for human myopathies and open up new possibilities in biotechnology.

Interactive Home-Based Computer Certification Training Courses In ...

Congratulations! By landing here you?ve doubtless been pondering on learning new skills to change career ? that means you?ve already taken one more step than the majority. Less of us than you?d think are satisfied with our careers, but most complain but just stay there. So, why not be one of the few who take responsibility for their future.

With regard to any career courses, discuss your thoughts with an industry expert who will be able to guide you on which area will be right for you. An advisor who will take time to get to know your personality, and discover what type of job will be right for you:

* Would you like to work with others? If the answer?s yes, would you enjoy being part of a team or do you want to meet lots of new people? Maybe you?d rather be left alone to get on with things?

* Are you thinking carefully about which area you maybe could work in? (Post credit crunch, it?s even more crucial to be selective.)

* Is this the final time you want to study, and if so, do you believe this career choice will service that need?

* Are you concerned with regard to your possibilities of getting another job, and keeping a job right up to retirement?

When listing your options, it?s relevant that your number one choice is the IT sector ? it?s common knowledge that it?s on the grow. It?s not all nerdy people lost in their computer screens constantly ? we know those jobs exist, but the majority of roles are done by ordinary people who get on very well.

Don?t accept anything less than the current Microsoft (or any other key organisation?s) authorised exam preparation packages. Don?t go for training programs relying on unofficial exam preparation questions. The type of questions asked can be quite different ? and often this creates real issues when it comes to taking the real exam. Always request some practice exams that will allow you to verify your comprehension whenever you need to. Mock exams add to your knowledge bank ? so you?re much more at ease with the real thing. Visit www.dreamweaver-training-london.co.uk for clear details.

Often, students don?t think to check on something that can make a profound difference to their results ? how their training provider divides up the courseware, and into how many bits. You may think that it makes sense (with training often lasting 2 or 3 years to gain full certified status,) for many training providers to send out a single section at a time, as you pass each element. Although: How would they react if you didn?t complete everything at the proposed pace? Often the staged order won?t be as easy as another different route may.

To be straight, the perfect answer is to get an idea of what they recommend as an ideal study order, but get all the study materials at the start. You?re then in possession of everything should you not complete it at their required pace.

Review the following facts and pay great regard to them if you?re inclined to think the sales ploy of ?guaranteeing? exams sounds like a benefit to the student:

Patently it isn?t free ? you?re still being charged for it ? it?s just been wrapped up in the price of the package. Students who go in for their examinations when it?s appropriate, paying for them just before taking them are far more likely to pass first time. They are conscious of the cost and take the necessary steps to make sure they?re ready.

Isn?t it in your interests to hold on to your money and pay for the exam at the appropriate time, instead of paying a premium to a training course provider, and to do it in a local testing office ? rather than in some remote centre? Considerable numbers of current training companies net big margins by getting paid for exams at the start of the course and hoping either that you won?t take them, or it will be a long time before you do. In addition to this, ?Exam Guarantees? often aren?t worth the paper they?re written on. The majority of organisations will not pay for re-takes until you?re able to demonstrate an excellent mock pass rate.

Shelling out hundreds or thousands of pounds on ?Exam Guarantees? is naive ? when study, commitment and preparing with good quality mock and practice exams is actually the key to your success.

A $15 million investment in expanding bowel cancer screening could save up to 4000 Australian lives each year and up to $1 billion.

Independent MPs Tony Windsor, Rob Oakeshott and Andrew Wilkie on Tuesday called on the federal government to expand its National Bowel Cancer Screening Program in the upcoming budget to include Australians aged 60 and 70 in the program, at a cost of $15 million.

Mr Oakeshott says it's a "no-brainer" and he will meet with Treasurer Wayne Swan to urge him to include $15 million in the May budget to expand the screening program.

The program now provides tests to all Australians when they turn 50, 55 and 65, but the three independent MPs want that expanded to include 60 and 70 year olds.

Mr Windsor said $15 million was a modest investment when Australia's overall bowel cancer medical bill was estimated at about $1 billion each year.

"And you cannot put a dollar value on the thousands of Australians who die of bowel cancer every year, despite bowel cancer being easy to treat if it is detected early," he said.

Mr Wilkie said the program's expansion was overdue.

"It is unacceptable that such an effective public health measure continues to be held back simply because of budget concerns," he said, adding the data showed it was cost-effective.

Bowel cancer is the second biggest cancer killer of Australians behind lung cancer. It claims close to 80 lives every week.

The federal budget will be handed down on May 8.

Monsoon mission to improve rainfall prediction: President

Government today said it had launched the monsoon mission programme to help improve forecast of the annual rainfall season, an initiative that would benefit millions of farmers.

"The Monsoon Mission programme launched by my Government will enable us to significantly improve monsoon prediction for the benefit of our farmers," President Pratibha Patil said in her address to the joint sitting of Parliament.

Patil said over 40 per cent of farmers across the country will be covered under the agro-meteorological services in the 12th Plan period from the 10 per cent at present.

Integrated ocean information advisory services will be extended to 90 per cent of coastal fishermen in our country, the President said.

"The key objective of the monsoon mission is to fix a monsoon forecasting model for the nation," officials said.

Though the focus will chiefly be on seasonal forecast, the mission will include aspects of short (up to 3 days) and medium-range (up to a week) predictions as well.

After a brainstorming session last year, scientists decided to use the Climate Forecasting System of the US-based National Centre for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) and the UK Met Office model for forecasting monsoon.

"But these models need to be improved greatly through a coordinated effort," they said.

Nearly 100 weather scientists, including at least 25 from other countries, are expected to fine-tune these models to Indian conditions with an aim to develop a model for India.

Aviation calls on EU leaders to fix carbon tax: FT

LONDON (Reuters) - Seven leading European aviation companies have written to European political leaders warning about the implications of a recently introduced EU carbon tax, the Financial Times reported on Monday.

The signatories, which include Airbus , British Airways, owned by International Airlines Group and Virgin Atlantic , argue that the pollution levy threatens jobs 2,000 jobs and trade.

They are concerned about trade-related retaliation by countries not complying with the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS).

The industry executives also said they expect "suspensions, cancellations and punitive actions" by other countries to grow "as other important markets continue to oppose ETS", according to the article, citing the letter.

According to Airbus and its airline partners in Europe, three unnamed state-owned Chinese airlines are refusing to finalize orders for 45 Airbus A330 long-haul jets worth up to $12 billion.

" started out as a discussion over environmental legislation but is turning into a trade conflict," an Airbus spokesman, cited by the FT, is quoted as saying.

The opposition campaign is being led by Airbus and has the support of the chief executives of British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Lufthansa , Air France , Air Berlin and Iberia.

The heads of Safran of France and MTU of Germany, two big makers of aerospace engines, also signed the letters.

They believe that the proposals should be put on hold until a global plan for carbon emissions is agreed.

Letters have been sent to leaders including British Prime Minister David Cameron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French Prime Minister Francois Fillon.
