Commodities / Gold and Silver 2012 Mar 10, 2012 - 03:45 PMBy: Eric_McWhinnie
After two days of consecutive gains, gold and silver briefly dipped into the red after Friday?s job report. The Labor Department?s monthly report said the United States economy added 227,000 jobs in February, compared to expectations of 213,000. Furthermore, hiring in January and December were better than previously thought. Those figures were revised to show 61,000 additional jobs. The economy has generated an average of 245,000 new jobs in each of the last three months.
Even though the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 8.3 percent, the U.S. dollar index, which weighs the dollar against six other fiat currencies, jumped from 79.16 to almost 80. ?This is a very strong report for a host of reasons,? said Eric Green, chief market economist at TD Securities. With the unemployment report giving strength to the dollar, some investors may be dialing down expectations of more quantitative easing from the Federal Reserve too soon. New reports indicate that the Fed is already discussing a new bond-buying program.
Earlier this week, the WSJ reported that ?Federal Reserve officials are considering a new type of bond-buying program designed to subdue worries about future inflation if they decide to take new steps to boost the economy in the months ahead. Under the new approach, the Fed would print new money to buy long-term mortgage or Treasury bonds but effectively tie up that money by borrowing it back for short periods at low rates? This is known as ?sterilized? QE.? Just the mere mention of more bond-buying was enough to send gold and silver higher, subdued inflation or not.
Although the positive unemployment report may have added doubts to more quantitative easing from the Fed, investors are not forgetting about the current easing in the form of record low interest rates and the Fed?s pledge to keep them low until 2014. When asked about another QE program, Presidential Candidate Dr. Ron Paul said, ?When you keep interest rates at zero percent essentially, isn?t that a bit of quantitative easing? It?s the policy that has not changed and its not likely to change. The whole concept is wrong, there?s a lot of credit out there being allocated by Congress and the Federal Reserve and it completely distorts the market.? Paul is pleased with the improved unemployment report, but goes on to explain the he believes the improvement will be temporary and the U.S. will continue with its course of structural unemployment.
To put the job market into perspective, Heidi Shierholz, economist at the Economic Policy Institute explains, ?We have 5.3 million fewer jobs now than we did before the recession started, and we should also have added around 4.6 million jobs over this period just to keep up with normal growth in the working-age population. Even at the quite strong average growth rate of the last three months, it would take roughly five years to get back to full employment in the labor market.?
Since the report about another bond-buying program on Wednesday, gold and silver have increased about 2 percent and 4 percent, respectively. The market is signaling little faith in the Fed?s ability to provide sterilized QE or a reduction of current QE because of an improved unemployment report. While it is not politically safe for the Fed to announce new quantitative easing programs, it will need to keep interest rates low to fund government debt.

Astrophile is our weekly column on curious cosmic objects, from the solar system to the far reaches of the multiverse
Object type: Space rock
Size: 200 kilometres wide
A rock five times the width of London hurtles through space. Destination? The south pole on the far side of the moon. As it strikes, it turns the surface into a brilliant sea of molten rock. In a flash, the rock's metal-rich body melts too, and a molten mixture of both it and the moon sprays upwards into the blackness of space.
Most falls back down near the impact site, some vaporises into clouds of plasma, and some rains down as far away as the opposite pole.
When the chaos settles, the moon is forever changed. It bears a scar on its surface larger than any other in the solar system. And now it seems the splattered remains of the visitor can explain one of the moon's biggest mysteries: why only certain regions of the crust are magnetised.
Evidence for the giant impact went unnoticed until the 1960s, when the first lunar orbiters got a look at the moon's far side. There, they saw the mammoth South Pole-Aitken basin. The biggest crater known, it stretches across a quarter of the entire lunar circumference.
Soon afterwards, Apollo astronauts brought samples of the lunar crust back to Earth and found a surprise ? they were magnetised. Even though the moon has no global magnetic field today, this suggested that molten metal ? an electrically conducting fluid ? once sloshed around the moon's core forcefully enough to generate one in the past.
Subsequent orbiter missions mapped the magnetised regions of the crust and found that instead of being uniformly distributed across the surface ? as might be expected if the moon had an internally-generated magnetic field ? their distribution is splotchy. Hundreds of magnetised regions, most on the far side, are surrounded by vast deserts of crust with little or no magnetism.
"The fact that [the moon is] generating these anomalous magnetic fields seems difficult to account for unless there's some sort of exotic fairy dust that's been sprinkled on it," says Ben Weiss at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
It makes sense that most of the moon would be unmagnetised. The crust is composed largely of anorthosite, a rare rock on Earth that forms when light, aluminium-rich minerals float to the top of a lava pool. Other metals, such as iron, are magnetised much more easily, but these heavier elements are thought to have sunken to the centre of the moon early in its formation, when our satellite was still molten after its creation in a collision between Earth and a Mars-sized object.
Space rocks, on the other hand, contain more of the heavy metals throughout their bodies because most never got hot enough to melt and differentiate into layers of different density.
Now Mark Wieczorek of Paris Diderot University in France, along with Weiss and colleagues, says the moon's magnetic fairy dust comes from the 200-kilometre-wide space rock that gouged out the South Pole-Aitken basin.
Its mass was comparable to all of the other meteoroids that have hit the moon ? combined. "That thing brought in a lot of material," says Weiss.
The team's computer simulations show that the molten ejecta from the impact should have fallen where the magnetic anomalies are found. "[Most] are sitting on the edge of the largest impact crater in the solar system," Weiss says.
So the giant space rock explains the source of magnetisable material. The strength of the magnetism recorded suggests that the impact occurred early in the moon's history, before the moon cooled and lost its internal magnetic field. That allowed the metal atoms in the molten metal-rock mixture to line up like bar magnets. Testing this idea will require bringing back samples of rocks from the South Pole-Aitken basin to determine when the impact occurred, Weiss says.
Catherine Johnson at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, who was not involved with the research, says the theory is much simpler than previous explanations, some of which involved clouds of plasma travelling around the moon after a series of smaller impacts on the lunar near side. "You need everything to happen just so [with those explanations]," she says.
Gareth Collins, of Imperial College London in the UK, says the magnetised metallic rocks on South Pole-Aitken basin's rim might be a good target for future human exploration. "It could prove an invaluable resource for human colonisation of the moon," he says.

Open to:?students in the final year at a publicly-funded further education institution
Award:??1500 bursary
The Helen Kennedy Foundation offers 20 main bursaries each year, alongside a number of Badged Bursaries, funded by organisations that support the Foundation?s purpose and mission and want to target this support direct to students. Click the link for more information on the Foundation?s Badged Bursary Scheme.
Some of the awards are open to any student who meets the main eligibility criteria and who has been nominated by their college for an award. Some awards have additional criteria which a student must meet in order to be considered for these awards. For example some awards are for students who are going to specific universities, are studying particular courses, or have particular life experiences. A list of the awards available in 2012 is listed here. This list indicates the specific criteria required for some of the bursaries. This information is only given so that students can include relevant information in their personal statement. It is not necessary for students or colleges to identify which award they wish to apply for. The foundation will consider students for all awards for which they are eligible.?
HKF offers financial help to students currently undertaking a course in a not for profit adult or further education institution, who intends to progress to a higher education programme.
Before making an application to the Foundation please ensure that you meet our eligibility criteria as follows:
Students can apply to the Foundation if they are:
Students cannot apply if they:
Applicants who do not meet the eligibility criteria will not be considered for an award.
You should only apply for an award if you are facing financial and personal difficulties which will make progression to higher education difficult.
If you meet the?eligibility criteria?and you want to apply for an award you will need to approach the Student Services team at your college and find out how they are planning to identify the 5 students that the college can nominate.
Download the application form and guidance notes. Read the information carefully to make sure that you complete all the required sections.
Complete the application form and personal statement.
Ask a college tutor, student services person, or other member of staff at college who knows you well, to provide you with a reference ? information for referees on what to include in the reference can be found in the guidance notes and in the application form.? Before completing their reference, your referee should have read your application form and personal statement ? please ensure that they have a copy of it.
Ask your college Principals to sign your application form.
Return your form to the Foundation.? Receipt of your form will not automatically be provided but if you want to?contact?the Foundation?to make sure that we have received it, then please do.
Your application will be considered by Trustees after the closing date.? All students will be informed of the outcome of their application before the end of July. The Trustees decision is final.
Application process: if you are a member of college staff
It can be very difficult to identify 5 students that you wish to nominate for an award, particularly where you have a large college or many sites.? Unfortunately the Foundation can only accept 5 applications from each college.
You are asked to begin the process of identifying applicants early in the application period to allow enough time for students to write their personal statements and complete their forms and for referees to complete statements.? Please also leave enough time for Principals to sign forms as this can sometimes be problematic!
If you want any advice or information about the process of making applications to the Foundation please do not hesitate to?contact?the Foundation. The Foundation sends information to all colleges by email, but if you would like to nominate yourself to be your college?s named contact for information about the awards please contact?Susan.
The Foundation is happy to answer questions about the awards application process outside of the application period, please contact?Susan?by email or telephone 0207 729 4584.
Successful students are usually awarded a??1500 bursary towards the costs of continuing their education.?The bursary is paid in?installments?throughout the student?s higher education course. Please note that the amount of the bursary can vary and some students will be offered scholarships instead of a bursary.
In addition to financial support, successful students will have the opportunity to take part in the the Foundation?s training, mentoring and work-shadowing programmes. This additional support and ongoing contact with the Foundation are key to the organisation?s objectives and so students should only apply if they feel they will benefit from both the financial support and the additional services available.

I love love. Who doesn?t?
Even more, I love a mutually enjoyable, enriching, and supportive committed relationship. Who doesn?t?
Above all else, I?m drawn to men and women with whom values, character, and humor sync up. If we?re talking about romance (and more), then libido must be compatible as well, when it comes to the man I love.
More than likely, any pairing with all of these qualities ? admittedly, not so easy to find ? will outlast the whirlwind courtship or the hasty remarriage. There will be common interests (at least a few), and plenty of differences (or things would be dreadfully dull).
I?d say it?s a case for friendship. Or friendship plus.
I read two articles today which are not explicitly related, but seemed to ?hook up? nicely in my Monday Morning musings and, to my mind, make the case for friendship.
The first was on Huffington Post, as a divorced mother involved in a long-term committed relationship explains her reasoning behind saying she will not remarry. Currently, she and her boyfriend see each other roughly twice a week, which is what they can manage around jobs, exes, and children.
Molly Shapiro writes:
? twice a week we get together and enjoy the best parts of a relationship without ever having to confront the problems that inevitably arise when a couple shares a home, a bank account and children?
Yes, there are moments of loneliness, reminders of all that I don?t have. But there are many more moments of profound contentment and joy, and the feeling that I might have hit on a formula that is ? if not perfect ? pretty great.
Pretty great sounds, well? pretty great!
On the loneliness note, the second article of interest appears on Yahoo News, with the latest in medical research explaining why loneliness endangers health. One could assume that the inherent stress of facing the world alone is part of the picture ? and it is ? but increasingly we?re learning the ways in which our immune systems are impaired.
We?re beginning to own up to the individual and collective costs of cultural isolation which is exacerbated by divorce, by an economy that leaves us despondent or constantly under stress, by loss of communities due to uprooting for work, and the growing alienation that many feel from others in their lives.
So how do these two articles come together ? at least, for me?
As I ponder Ms. Shapiro?s relationship as she recounts its advantages (despite societal pressure to remarry), what I observe is this. She and her loved one have achieved a workable arrangement which suggests they share values including responsibility to their children, recognition of how much they?re juggling, and appreciation of how fragile a marital bond may become.
Lonely moments? Ms. Shapiro admits to them. Then again, how many of us have lived lonely years inside our marriages, and just as many in search of a partner ? especially when our culture insists on as much?
One might assume that to manage, both Ms. Shapiro and her boyfriend, as single parents, rely on a supportive network ? friends, community ? concepts we used to take for granted.
In hindsight, perhaps the machinery of friendship ? common values, like character, shared activities, etc. ? is a significant part of what was missing in my marriage. Something I?ve learned, as I?ve done my laps in post-marital dating waters.
In my single days, friendships filled my heart and served as my fortress. The women in my life sustained me, as did friends even during my marriage. But friendship after divorce can be problematic.
Think about it. Even if you?re wildly in love with your significant other or spouse, don?t friendships offer a different sort of refuge? Don?t they nurture and encourage us, beat back the blues, and help us stand up to those periods of loneliness?
As for quality relationships on our terms, that work for both adults involved ? I believe they bring out our better selves, and for some of us, promote connections to more people rather than fewer.
Is anyone likely to argue with the reasoning that friendships enrich our lives, and offer models to our children through good and bad times?
True friendship exemplifies caring for others, laughter as good medicine, honoring commitments as basic to trust, managing conflicts when they arise, and affection as essential glue in human interaction.
We live out loyalties, acknowledge the gifts and challenges of personal history, and accept our differences, imperfectly, as well as our commonalities.
I?d like to make the case for friendship learned when we?re young, nurtured throughout our inevitable trials, offered without strings and yes, occasionally we misjudge and we?re hurt or exploited.
I?d like to make the case for friendship as we grow older, our ability to reconfigure communities as we need them, our freedom to choose relationships that are realistic and loving given our individual familial, financial, medical, marital, and professional circumstances.
I?d like to express my own wonderment ? still ? at the overwhelming power of real community in a virtual world. We reconnect with long lost friends. We invariably create new connections. We move beyond the screen to the telephone, to meeting face to face, to taking the proper time to truly cement lasting friendships.
Here?s to the men and women who are brave enough to stare down loneliness and say yes, I see you, but I?m going to find a better way. Here?s to the men and women who recognize loneliness in an acquaintance or a stranger, and reach out to ease their pain.
Here?s to adults who are willing to try respect, love, and admiration for one another without sacrificing others on the Happiness Altar, nonetheless arriving at relationships that work. And my guess is, friendship forms the foundational structure.

One of the world's leading researchers into spinal cord injuries says China could hold the key to a cure that he has been searching for since he met late actor Christopher Reeve in the 1990s.
US-based Doctor Wise Young first used the word "cure" in relation to his work after a conversation with Reeve, the "Superman" hero who became quadriplegic in an equestrian accident in 1995.
Reeve contacted him looking for help and the two became close friends. The actor died of heart failure in 2004 at the age of 52, having devoted his life to raising awareness about spinal cord injuries and stem-cell research.
But it was a star of a different sort, Chinese gymnast Sang Lan, who set Young on the path he believes has brought a cure closer than ever, thanks to ground-breaking clinical trials of stem-cell therapy he is conducting in China.
"Everybody assumed that I'm doing this in China because I wanted to escape George W. Bush, but that's not the case at all," Young told AFP in an interview, recalling the former US president's 2001 decision to effectively stop Federal funding of embryonic stem cell research.
"I started the clinical trials in 2005 here in Hong Kong ... mainly because of a promise that I made to a young woman. Her name is Sang Lan."
Sang crushed her spine during a routine warm-up exercise at the Goodwill Games in New York in 1998. She met Young as she underwent treatment and rehabilitation in the United States over the next 12 months.
"Her parents came to me and asked whether or not there would ever be a cure for her, and I said we're working very hard on it," recalled Young, who was by then one of the leading US experts on spinal cord injuries.
"When she went back to China after doing her rehabilitation in New York she cried and asked how would therapies go from the United States to China.
"In those days China was still relatively poor and backward so she didn't think that any therapy would be coming from China. So I started in 1999 to talk to all the spinal cord doctors in China."
He said the result was China Spinal Cord Injury Net, the world's largest clinical trial network for spinal cord therapies. Established in Hong Kong in 2005, it is about to expand into Europe, India and the United States.
"We're testing umbilical cord blood-cell transplants into the spinal cord combined with lithium treatments," said Young, professor in neuroscience at Rutgers University, New Jersey.
At about 20 centres in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, stem cells are injected into patients' damaged spines to help regenerate nerves, while lithium is used to promote the growth of the nerve fibres.
Each component of the combination therapy needs to be tested separately before they are brought together in the third and final phase, due to take place in the coming years if all goes well.
The results so far have been promising, although it's "still too early" to draw conclusions about recovery of movement, Young said.
"What we can comfortably say right now is that the procedure seems to be quite safe. Nobody has lost any function," he added.
"We don't expect people to be jumping out of bed and running marathons after this. Regeneration is a slow process."
The trials also involve intensive walking exercises for some of the severely injured participants at the Army General Hospital in Kunming, southwestern China.
In two sessions of three hours each, six days a week, the patients "sculpt" their nerve fibres into shape, Young said. He likened it to running a marathon every day. By comparison, Reeve did about two hours of exercise daily.
"The families are there cheering them on. There's a mass effect," said Young in his tiny office in central Hong Kong, where he was born into a business family in 1950.
"They are joshing with each other, saying 'I'm going to beat you today'. There's that kind of atmosphere that allows you to do it six hours a day, and once it becomes a routine you keep going."
One of the tragic and little-known side effects of the country's booming economy is the rise in car accidents and construction site accidents, leading to soaring numbers of spinal injuries.
China's rate of chronic spinal cord injuries has increased more than 10-fold since 1995, and another 80,000 people are added to the list every year, according to Young.
Growing demand for therapies has led some unscrupulous Chinese researchers to offer stem-cell treatments at high prices, without any clinical proof that their methods are effective.
But Young said such problems existed everywhere. For him, the real story about China is how it has gone from the backwater of Sang Lan's day to a country at the cutting edge of spinal cord research.
Chinese government spending on biomedical research is at least on a par with the United States, and the legal framework governing its clinical standards is second to none, the doctor said.
"It's turned 180 degrees from the time Sang Lan was asking how will therapies get to China. Now Americans want to go to China," Young said.
"This is not what I would have said to Sang Lan back in 1998, but it is possible that the cure for spinal cord injury will actually come from China."
Young does not use the word "cure" lightly.
