Marsquake? How rumblings could bolster hope for life on Mars.

If seismic activity on Mars is recent, and it can be traced to a volcano, it could mean that there is a source of heat to melt ice and provide potential habitats for simple forms of life.

A pair of long gashes in the surface of Mars associated with a towering volcano shows evidence of marsquakes that could have occurred within the past few million years, and perhaps within modern times, according to new research.

If such activity is recent, and it can be traced to the volcano, it would imply that the mountain is still active ? its magma providing a source of heat to melt ice and provide potential habitats for simple forms of life.

The gash is one of a pair of parallel features known collectively as Cerberus Fossae. These appear to be enormous collapsed lava dikes formed during eruptions of Elysium Mons, a volcano that vaults more than eight miles above the vast lava fields that surround it.

The mountain is thought to have been active within the past 2 million years. In principle, it still could be, with magma working its way down the flanks through subsurface conduits, rather than through repeated surface eruptions.

In 2010, another team of researchers hunting for heat sources on the Martian surface with an instrument aboard NASA's Mars Odyssey orbiter reported that they had detected warmth in the gashes, known as graben. The team noted that the signatures were hard to explain without invoking a subterranean source of heat.

Now, a team of researchers interested in faults on Mars says patterns of fallen boulders in both graben testify to marsquakes.

The team estimates that the temblors have occurred over a geologically recent span of time that could include the present day. If the evidence they see resulted from one quake, it would have registered at least a magnitude 7.5 had it occurred on Earth, comparable to an earthquake that devastated eastern Turkey last year. The results appear tomorrow in the Journal of Geophysical Research ? Planets.

The link between volcanoes, active faults, and potential habitats ?makes the boulder data we have collected so intriguing,? said Gerald Roberts, a geophysicist at the University of London who led the British-Italian team that conducted the study, in a prepared statement.

Using boulders as benchmarks for earthquake activity is one way to get around the dearth of instruments on Mars for taking the geophysical pulse of the planet. So far, NASA's Viking landers, which arrived at Mars in the mid 1970s, are the only platforms that carried seismometers to Mars, notes James Head III, a planetary scientist at Brown University in Providence, R.I., who studies volcanoes, quakes, and tectonics on other planets.

Unfortunately, he adds, the only shaking they detected came from vibrations as wind buffeted the landers.

Indeed, he adds, ?it's pretty remarkably abysmal? that basic information gleaned from seismometers ? from the structure of a planet's interior to the level of quake activity ? is still lacking for Mars. Scientists have had to turn to Earth's moon as a model for what the structure of Mars' crust might be like. Apollo astronauts left seismometers on the moon that operated until 1977 and revealed a great deal about the moon's structure.

Given the paucity of data on quake activity on Mars, Dr. Gordon's team has provided a ?great analysis and is very thought-provoking,? says Dr. Head, who was not part of the team.

In an e-mail exchange, Roberts explains that the inspiration for using boulders as surrogates for estimating quake activity came during a conversation he was having with a colleague. The colleague asked about detecting earthquakes on Mars and Roberts recalls regaling him with the Viking story. The colleague then asked: "Can you not see evidence of landslides triggered by marsquakes?"

Budget: Parties want more for infrastructure - Business - Mail ...

Political and private players on Wednesday expressed happiness with Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan's budget speech, saying individual tax relief and allocations for infrastructure were promising.

But the Democratic Alliance (DA) said the money allocated for infrastructure and growth was not good enough.

"I don't think we got it today, but let's give the minister credit because he managed to bring the budget deficit down," said DA finance spokesperson Tim Harris.

"The fact that he managed to do that shows us that we have more space to be bold on growth, and on infrastructure particularly ... I mean the growth number that he [announced] today is projected to grow at 2.7% and that's with the global economy growing faster ... and Africa growing even faster ... We want to see far more on growth. Those numbers aren't good enough."

He said the budget showed that this year less would be spent on infrastructure.

"We want to see bolder numbers," he said.

Pleasant and predictable
But African Christian Democratic Party MP Steve Swart said he was pleased the budget focused on the productive side of the economy, namely infrastructure development, instead of on the consumer economy.

If the money allocated on infrastructure was well spent it would stimulate the economy and create jobs, he said.

"All-in-all [it was] a very positive budget in difficult circumstances," Swart said.

He said he was pleasantly surprised given the global economic crisis and prospect of reduced economic growth in South Africa, but added he was disappointed in the increase in the fuel levy by 20 cents a litre of petrol and diesel from April 4, as this would be inflationary.

Inkatha Freedom Party leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi said the budget was "somehow predictable, both in terms of what it addresses and in terms of what it fails to address".

Much would depend on whether or not declarations of policy would materialise into programmes of action. The most concerning aspect was the insufficient emphasis on economic growth, he said.

South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry CEO Neren Rau said the increase in taxes on business was concerning.

"Our biggest concern is the increased taxes on business -- capital gains tax and the corporate tax," he said after the budget was tabled by Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan in Parliament.

"We are a bit concerned about the impact that would have during a time when liquidity is fairly tight."

Rau said two key factors influenced an enterprise's desire to invest, namely the economic outlook, which remained uncertain, and the policy environment.

"We have just come out of a very uncertain policy environment."

'Reasonably well'
Rau added if 2012 could offer more certainty on policy, business might be more willing to loosen the purse strings and invest.

Gordhan addressed two items on Sacci's wish list for small and medium businesses. The minister announced moves to ease the regulatory burden on small businesses, which Rau said was "done reasonably well".

The minister also announced measures to ease the tax burden on small business, to which Rau replied: "We do have reservations about the real impact of this," Rau said.

Gordhan said the tax-free threshold for small businesses would be increased to R63556 in the coming year, while the 10% tax rate would be reduced to 7%.

The threshold to which this tax rate applied would be increased to R350000.

FF+ approves of savings resolutions
Freedom Front Plus leader Pieter Mulder was also concerned about the increased fuel levy due to the knock-on effects it would have on inflation and food prices.

But Mulder said he found a number of positive announcements and welcomed the plans aimed at encouraging the public to save.

He was also pleased with the news that the budget deficit was below 5%.

"I thought with all the extra spending it would not be possible. So I think that's positive."

Mulder said there was a need for the government to compromise on the tolling of highways, but welcomed details of a "ceiling" figure of R550 per month on toll road charges.

The Christian Democratic Party said Gordhan's budget was "reasonable", considering the trying times people were living in.

"Higher than anticipated inflation necessitated tax bracket relief, and the relaxation of the tax burden of small businesses will go some way in alleviating the additional stress brought about by the Consumer [Protection] Act," party leader Theunis Botha said.

Government must 'lead the way'
Congress of the People's (Cope) Nick Koornhof said the government must prove it can deal with the new budget.

"Government must lead the way. They must show that they can spend taxpayers' money properly," he said.

He added it was important for the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) to support the budget.

"It is very important that Cosatu supports him [Gordhan] now. If they don't do it, we are going to have trouble with regards to the state wage Bill."

Koornhof said the minister's anti-corruption measures could help save government up to R100-billion.

Elements of optimism for health
Metropolitan Health CEO Blum Khan said in an interview on eNews he was happy with the confidence building elements of the speech.

He said declarations that the government would remove the waste and inefficiency in its system, and visible progress in the health system contributed to this.

Gordhan said the new health system would require funding over and above current budget allocations to public health.

An additional R1-billion conditional grant had been allocated over the next three years to the current budget to cover the cost of national health insurance pilot projects, which will be established in "selected districts" during this year and 2013.

Unhappy Greenpeace
Non-governmental organisation Greenpeace said it was disappointed with the minister's commitment to deal with climate change.

"The financial commitment towards accelerating a low carbon economy is too little, and could be too late," communications director for Greenpeace South Africa Fiona Musana said in a statement.

"If South Africa increased its investments in the green economy, we would see at least 148000 jobs in less than 20 years, and ensure a cleaner future for this country," she added. -- Sapa & M&G Reporter

National Academy of Inventors and US Patent and Trademark Office to work closely to promote American academic innovation

Tampa, Fla. (Feb.22, 2012) - In an article published in Volume 13 Number 3 of Technology and Innovation, Proceedings of the National Academy of Inventors, Richard Maulsby, associate commissioner for innovation and development for the USPTO's Office of Innovation Development, advocates for promoting American academic innovation. In his paper titled "Promoting American Innovation," he writes that the USPTO will be "building on the past success of our outreach to independent and small entity inventors and to inventors associated with colleges, universities and research institutions."

"To this end," said Maulsby, "the Office of Innovation and Development will be establishing initiatives in the coming year tailored more specifically to academic institutions. We also want to collaborate with the National Academy of Inventors (www.academyofinventors.org) on educational outreach regarding the value and importance of innovation and patents as well as recognition and support of academic inventors."

Maulsby noted that in June 2011, the USPTO announced a pro-bono pilot program to provide legal assistance to independent and small entity inventors. Maulsby also cites the close relationship he is establishing between his office and the NAI, as well as others in the private sector and government who are concerned with innovation.

"We look forward to participating in conferences and events sponsored by the NAI," said Maulsby. "The USPTO will develop an ongoing presence in this organization and in their publication, and we will include universities in our meetings and roundtables. This is clearly in our best interest because the academic world is a major source of technological innovation."

Maulsby said in his paper that the USPTO will collaborate with the NAI on educational outreach on the value of recognizing and supporting academic inventors.

"We are pleased to have a collaborative relationship with the USPTO's new Office of Innovative Development," said Dr. Paul R. Sanberg, senior associate vice president for research and innovation at the University of South Florida and president of the National Academy of Inventors. "Such support from associate commissioner Maulsby and his colleagues will likely further encourage more institutions to consider more seriously the benefits of faculty innovation."

In fact, there are so many methods utilized by Internet Marketers that it becomes intimidating for some people. Choosing a particular method can be quite difficult. To make it a little easier for you, we wrote this article with proven strategies.

On a side note ? for anybody who is interested in this, you should check out flight simulator games as that is the very good resource.

Spend a half an hour every day leaving good comments on blog posts. Commenting on blogs is a way to build backlinks to your own site. It?s also a source of traffic. The more you do it, the more benefits you?ll gain from blog commenting. People will also see you as the generator of great content and this can lead to more opportunities. This only works, of course, if your comments are valuable and on topic. You can?t do content marking with "good job" and a link. That isn?t content marketing, it?s spam. Spend as much time as you can spare on blog commenting, as it has several distinct benefits. Podcasting is something that can help your business. Most Internet Marketers do not utilize the power of podcast for some reason. Video is a very powerful tool. You know how powerful text is. There is also power in an audio file that people can hear. There are many ways to deliver this type of content, including iTunes which has a huge global audience. As long as the content you are providing is good, people will listen to it everyday. When you allow another person to join you on your daily or weekly podcast and they tell other people that they know about it, you can get exposure to thousands of other people by doing this one simple thing. Those are people who could potentially become buyers and clients.

The dilemma using proflightsimulator review can be that could be a dull activity.

Next, you might want to review products and services that can help people. This works well if you can post the reviews on highly trafficked sites like Amazon or CNet. These are sites that will sometimes let you fill out profiles so that people can track the reviews you put up and, potentially, follow a link to your website. This is why you need to make sure that the reviews you post are well thought out and well written. If you are an affiliate of certain products, write reviews on them. Once people read the reviews, they will follow the link to learn more, and if they buy, you will make a sale. So start applying these principles to your own business, and you?ll see how valuable content marketing can be. The internet gives you endless ways to create and share your content, so keep your eyes and mind open.
